    As a former machinist, precision tools especially German and Swiss( the best) get insanely expensive. I have probably $20000 invested in tools. If you use tools everyday get the best you can afford. Preferably with a good warranty. I wrench in a bike shop now for fun and laughs. We use Park, Pedro's and Craftsmen tools. Theyre just fine! Avoid cheap, Chinese junk, it often needs to be modified to be functional when it's brand new and only 'works' for a short time. Tools are an investment. Mine save me time. Time IS money or at least time Id rather spend riding!

    Should have headed over to the Spinergy booth to see glass spokes, well polymer fibers in glass phase. They also erroneously claim they don't stretch, but clearly they do, as you say stretch is needed to tension a wheel. Solid silica glass would make a poor spoke as any bending would easily break it, but it's still an elastic material. Could use it as fibers, but there are better choices, such as Spinergy's.

    Unless you're racing, proprietary junk makes very little sense. Neither does 'reinvention of the wheel'. Bicycles 'should be' simple, reliable, affordable machinery. That's what the vast majority of consumers actually 'need'. Most of this new fangled proprietary junk is more difficult to repair, more expensive or requires special tools. Most real world, experienced and practical wheel builders and mechanics know this. We have dozens of bikes sitting unridden in the shop WAITING a week or more for ALL SORTS of proprietary junk available from only one source. People complain about the wait, so my advice is: " buy another bike today, then you can ride today!" It's a great means to sell more bikes in this neighborhood, believe it or not! When you break a spoke, sometimes you're traveling far and wide. Broken proprietary junk potentially ruins a big event unless you planned for the worst. The best thing to do is use ONLY J bend stainless spokes that any decent shop stocks around the world. Many good shops can cut and thread a j bend spoke to the correct length for you.

  • @parktool

    @parktool

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it is both of those issues. Its kinda chicken and the egg type thing but in this case the spoke breaking came first then the bend in the wheel was introduced leading to shaking while riding without your hands. Repair the spoke and bring the wheel back to true and your woes will be resolved.

    Depends on what the hub diameter measures. An online spoke length calculator might help you out. Sheldon Brown gives a good discussion of the calculation, too.

    I am 6'5" and 300 lbs. I break spokes all the time. Using your 3 strikes rule I would be rebuilding my wheel ever 6 months. Other than losing weight is there anything I should do to lessen the spoke breakage? Are there better brands of spokes?

    There are different grades of spokes that may help you out. A good builder with a proper rim and hub will be able to build you a long lasting wheel. A robust rim will help the spokes out quite a bit.

    If you use the TM1 to tension spokes? can you use it on bladed spokes in the same way?

    Yes, You can use it to MEASURE tension. You and the spoke wrench need to do the tensioning!

    Nige Johnson Yup, I was trying to be a smartass! You do need a slotted ‘spoke holder’ to hold spoke to prevent blade from twisting while you tension the spoke. You can obtain the specific tool or saw a slit in a hard piece of wood or plastic. Either will work fine.

    @@rollinrat4850 I am aware of that to and I do own one. I am talking about the TM1 Flexing the spoke to get a reading. The only way I see it is the TM 1 Can only flex the spoke in two directions as opposed to all round on a round spoke.

    Nige Johnson Youre over thinking it. Use the tool on the thinnest cross section of the spoke. Thats the area that is most effected by the tension. Similar to measuring tension on the thinnest part of a butted spoke, in the middle. Whenever you look at the chart that comes with the tool you use values given for the thinnest section on spokes you’re using. If you have 2.0/1.8 spokes, use the values for 1.8. Ive built wheels for almost 40 years, when I started I learned from an old wheelbuilder. He told me NOT to tension wheels very high. High spoke tension doesn’t make wheels stronger. It cracks spoke holes or worse. I followed his advise. Ive always tensioned to the lower middle of the range given. Many other good builders do the same. I DONT use road hubs (130mm) requiring lots of dish, like 11 and 12 speed. They may work ok for awhile but wheels with large tension differences side to side dont last very long or take a real beating. Its why MTB standards keep getting wider, some road/ cross wheels are now 135mm. Theres a reason why a broad, more equally sided triangle is a stronger geometric shape compared to one with a shorter base. Wheel strength, reliability and long life are most important to me. Wheels are a MAJOR safety concern, lightweight and # of gears are a lesser consideration. WHAT WE ROLL ON is MOST important!! I have zero dish, symmetrical singlespeed wheels that are pretty light and I can beat them in rocks on 33c tires. They very rarely need truing. Personally Im not too nice to my wheels! Ive built hundreds of wheels, they rarely go out of true. Out of all those wheels maybe a dozen spokes have broken, mostly disc wheels. My wheels have only broken (mostly dented rims and flat spots) when customers or myself have had accidents or used the wheels doing dumb stuff they werent designed for. I love ‘underbiking’ ! I ride mostly very simple ‘cross and singlespeed type bikes outside their intended usage. It makes familiar trails new and challenging! Sorry for dragging this out. I love working on wheels. The spoked wheel and the inherent strength of the structure fascinates me!
