I Bought My Dream Porsche In Japan And Took It Straight To RWB!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Finally! This has been a long time coming, a project car that has driven me crazy as much as it has made me happy - and finally I can officially reveal it on the cahnnel.
7 years in the making, Project 964 was always supposed to be a long term project, but little did I know it would have such a slow start with so many hurdles. With most important things addressed and fixed, it’s now time to really begin this build.
The RWB visit at the end is the little cherry on top. Enjoy and as ever I look forward to your comments.

Although I love WRB and all the different choices when getting the kits I would love to do something different and go with the INDECENT kit..they're fairly new but they're as wild and unique as RWB.

I really think RWB is so popular that you can not do something new or unique. RWB is cool and everything, they are all similar. Would not be much more experiense to build something like TBK or Abflug as in Japan? It would be more outstanding and so overhyped.

I 100% agree. And for what its worth, you're essentially "destroying" the car forever. They aint making more of them, and restoring a car that has been RWB'd is very difficult. I would totally have voted for an RWB 10-15 years ago when I first heard about them, and when they were japan exclusive afaik. But now, it kind of feels like a rocket bunny brz/gt86 for me... Its been done. The shop you visited recently, the guy from midnight club. If he offers his body kit to non midnight club members, would be the move.

Absolutely agree, I'd love to see Dino's personal build on this Porsche and see him learn the platform etc. RWBs are neat but so overplayed now and it's virtually irreversible to the car without major help. I'd rather see a throwback performance build with this one.

if abflug's still making their 930/64 parts that would be a breath of fresh air Though in a way you're still cutting up the car since these kits are made for turbo-bodies, not the narrow Carrera body

I agree RWB certainly has a following but tbh he free-hand hacks up the car. Porsche purists and expert car restorers think his work is so bad and so shoddy. Why not do a custom body kit that can be removed. That way it is unique and preserves its value and respects the original body.

In my humble opinion, RWB has become a victim of its own success, and has leaned a bit too “manufactured roughness” with the clients opting for big dollar show car rather than raw race car idlers RWB of old. But having said that, if anyone deserves a true raw RWB build, its the person who brought RWB into the mainstream consciousness and into video games and youtube notoriety. That would be Dino DC! And the 964 is quintessential RWB starting platform imo

For me, what stands out about RWB - other than the looks - is the man behind the concept being the man who builds and installs every single one of the bodykits. I remember watching the video that followed the first three builds in Brazil some years back, it was groundbreaking to see such a big name in intermational car culture here at the time. People forget or don't know that the originals were performance-oriented, and seeing a rescue of that idea would be cool to see. Seeing the stock 964 in a good shape, and knowing there's no way back once you go for it, makes this a tough choice to make, but, your car, your dream.

Good luck with it. As much as I love the documentary-based approach to most of your content, no one can resist a build series on youtube, can they? I know you've mentioned in the past you really like the blended over-fender approach to an RWB build and I totally agree. I think people forget there can be a spectrum with these cars. it's doesn't have to foot-wide overfenders... You can go for that more GT2 or RSR look as well. Then of course with companies like Carbone and Ollis Custom Parts out there, there is so much off the shelf goodness you can throw straight on. I imagine any RWB-ification is still some years down the road but will definitely look forward to seeing what you do with the car. EDIT: That said, I have to agree with the other comments that mentioned the ABK kit, it really is exceptional.

Dino congrats on the 964. Being a Yellow 964 Carrera 2, makes it quite unique and possibly rare. Do not go down the route of RWB. A narrow body car is so charming and that is so much that you can do to make it your own without being a bolton on fibre kit. Wheels definitely need to have a nod to JDM, seats, maybe only the drivers seat have some fabric insert nodding to JDM as well. And the suspension, breaks, engine, gearbox... I mean much like Honda civis, 911 of the air cooled Era are like LEGO, take advantage of that.

I feel like some Work Meister S1’s would look FANTASTIC on your Porsche. They sort of match the factory wheel look, but with JDM flare👌. Maybe 1” larger than stock diameter and a bit more flush fitment. Or crazy deep barrel if you end up with the RWB kit as mentioned🤤… Also, I really wish he’d gone 2” narrower with the rear fenders on the 997. It’s too goofy.

If the natural progression of modding the car leads you to a full RWB build that'd be really cool to see, and I'd only suggest you consider one with the molded fenders. Definitely more labor intensive on Nakai's part but well worth the time and effort if you ask me. People online are looking for something new to latch on to, so You will inevitably get a lot of people here who don't know RWB that well and see it only as some guy who cuts up fenders, and gets paid big money to do so, without knowing the history of how that look came to be (and that most of the Japan built cars actually have the performance to back up the looks). If this turns out to be a car true to the core spirit of RWB, it would be more than enough to set it apart from the average internationally built car.

In my humble opinion do as you wish. But at the end of the day Nakai-san is an artist. The art and the artist are both finite, but the art tends to outlive the artist. Perhaps I'm a bit too late, and truthfully I forget what journalist is responsible for the quote but it was something like "the car is an avatar of the driver." and more-so than any other car culture, I think SEA takes it to the extreme where they let their cars express the individuality they aren't able to express in their day-to-day life. Nakai-san's vision of his avatar in the Stella Artois car has been rebuilt over and over again for other drivers that want that style and avatar over their own image. As a fan of your work over the long years of Speed Hunters and delving into KZread the vision that I'd think of is "The ultimate front quarter panel shot while sitting in Daikoku PA". Nothing batshit insane or 6 figure build-wise, just a pure and solid machine modified to create a beautiful picture in the iconic locations of Japan to bring that idealistic beauty to life on screen. Silly as it sounds, the image I have of your work is remaking the old porsche in the image of the Leicaflex SL2 camera, something so dedicated to it's vision that it defines its own idea of absurdity. Having an RWB kit doesn't change that because of how he creates them but that sort of precise capture of something in the moment that we sometimes forget in the digital age is that sort of idea of the type of Porsche I see you driving. Regardless, I look forward to future content since whatever it shows is your own vision of the car and you're one of my favorite car photographers so I know it'll look fantastic lol

Love the speed yellow, and really look forward to this project. I love the 964 myself and still have one. Think you meant possibly replace with a 993 manual 6 speed box 😊. But would love if you modernised it and modified but kept it without any body changes ❤. RWB were so cool in the early days and I remember seeing Nakai San first in EGO magazine and fell in love with Stella, but I sort of feel his cars have become a victim of their success.... A stock bodied 964 on the streets is so so special now to me, I even feel a Singer car bodied as a standard 964 with arches etc modified only slightly to cover the larger wheels would be so cool.

If the goal is the experience and not the end product, RWB all the way. If you're looking to treasure the car, I think a more classic restomod build would retain more of the car's charm and value. End of the day, it's a personal choice and I don't think there's a subjective right/wrong one. I personally wouldn't(biased, as 964 is my favourite chassis), but you have to follow your heart.

i kind of understand your point of view Dino with the Porsche, regarding your journey where you was there from the beginning with a helping hand to set Nakai on the map,& see the the progress of its evolving at Tsukuba & i admit im also tipping toward both sides of the genres from resto mod sleeper with some modernizing in chassis + maybe an free reving Rs Na engine + some clean body kits`` that flows well but also love the more raw Cup Replica approach going road version``but as a cleaned up`` road cup`` all of the road going cup cars have always speak to me, im bit there with my car as well not a Porsche but a Datsun Sunny B110, after i yesterday finally seen an mint original B110 sedan i doubt my thoughts for a second about going Ts Cup replica for my B110, but at the same time i also get more motivated to go the Cup approach route as everyone else is almost running bone original here & you never seen Cup replicas for the road it can also maybe relate to the common age of owners of those cars here too, that said the example i saw had only 65k kilometers from original so i would have been feeling bad to made that to an cup replica, mine is an longer runner & has alot of cosmetically & need complete respray in the end,so its a bliss too feel free with it to create something unique``/different, its always hard decisions to make with such personal projects,& in the end it is only yourself that should/could appreciate all of the choices made, when i see your Porsche the Ruf Ctr2 Pikes peak 1997 also comes to mind as good spirited inspiration & very well looking forward to follow your jorney further into it, Rock on Dino 😃🏁 Sincerely Ivan

As much as I love RWB, I'm only a fan of the more modest examples from him, and even then, I'd rather throw money (first and foremost) at a full engine rebuild or on an all new one. N/A, of course :) I can't believe using a 996 6 speed in an aircooled 911 is a thing now because I didn't know it existed!

Get a sequential gearbox. Not sure if that would be your kinda thing as a daily. lol Also when you showed the SpeedHunters sticker on the window of RWB HQ I noticed the Crosspoint Racing Team sticker. I randomly bumped into the owner of that team at RWB HQ. We both happened to stop by at the same time looking for Nakai san but he wasn't there. The guy gave me a Crosspoint Racing Team sticker while he stuck that one on the window. This was back in 2017. I still have the exact same one on my MacBook Air.
