I bought an Alfa Romeo GTV that has been disassembled for 25 years

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is my latest project.
It's a 1968 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV, hence the sought after first series, that was offered to me upon recommendation. It's going to get a full restoration on the channel over the next years.

Yeah, the most optimistic target would be spring 24, but that’s probably quite naive. More realistic target would be to take Olivia for the journey to Padova 23.

Being blessed with 10 thumbs and disconcerting incoordination I am in awe of your departure on this adventure. Love Alfas. Growing up, my neighbour raced a P3 Alpha with his son in the 1950’s and retired with a factory “breathed on” 1750 GTV which was replaced with a 2000 GTV after he ( heartbreakingly) front ended the 1750 and could not bring himself to repair it. Along with the 2000 came me as car-wash-and- detailer-in-chief, driving support dogs-body and all round in-love-with -Alphas - forever. Hope the resto is going well. Don’t forget to post us all an update !

It looks like a lot of work but poorly restored shiny cars need about the same amount of new panels replaced. I would start from the floor and work my way out. Hey Robert. 66 means 1600, scalino and single headlights, right? What colour is yours? I tend to go for one of the contemporary blue tones, i.e. Bluette, Blu Francia or Blu olandese. That is for two reasons: I found traces of blue at hidden places of the body and though there’s no actual justification, I still like the idea of giving her back the original colour. Second reason: the cacao kind of tone of the interior will give a perfect match with dark blue.

You really love and appreciate these cars, it's obvious. A couple of real gems - the steel wheels (must be like hen's teeth now) and better still the steering wheel. BTW, I also love the interiors and particularly the dash and 'clocks' of the 105's (I'm so familiar with them from my childhood in a Giulia Super).

Yeah, you can feel the enormous care and devotion that went into the development and manufacturing of these cars. It’s a such a pity that these few thoughtless mistakes they made in designing quarter panels and sills have ruined Alfa’s reputation. I’ll never understand why they haven’t redesigned it, after - say - five years it must have been clear it won’t work that way.

I’ve looked into the US 928 market in the past weeks, but couldn’t get the hang of the pricing. I found low priced cars between 10 and 20k with no obvious reasons to justify twice the price. The same was true for the upper segment. 50-100k and I never recognised what the reason could be. Hey Joe. I’m not sure about the leather. People keep telling me the seats are very rare, but I’m not an expert in the 105’s history and I don’t want to say anything wrong. When it comes to KTL, I’m driven by the fact that it has been the method of choice in the contemporary car industry for 2-3 decades now. Of course today’s body designs are tailored towards it, and that’s exactly what challenges me: how to apply it to an ancient design?

@@GreasyFingers @Greasy Fingers There company I spoke to about doing mine said ( for the initial dip) holes needed to be drilled in any areas where the solution could not drain once it was removed from the tank. In addition, it was advised to E-coat before outer ( and possibly) middle Sills were fitted to reduce the risk of the acid solution collecting in the flanges where the panels meet, and to allow the coating to be applied to these areas properly. In the end, I figured modern Epoxy primer and cavity wax applied properly would likely outlast my lifetime anyway - so that's why I'm swaying away on my 66 GTV but might opt for my GTV 2000

@@joehounsham424 Thanks, Joe. That’s exactly my thoughts too. I was thinking along the lines of e-coating it without the middle and outer sill, maybe even without the quarter panels (and coating these separately of course). Doing all the adjustment work of the sill panels before (and tacking it together, but then disassemble it again) would make sure that things fall in place after the coating took place.

Hi Maxi.
