Greetings gentlemen. I'm 60 with no medical issue except I need to wear reading glasses at this age. I was wondering if they will still allow me to learn to fly. I started taking up lessons 10 years ago and had about 10 hours flying with CFI but personal problems prevented me to continue. I wanted to start all over again this year. My goal is just to buy a Cessna 150 someday and just have fun with it until I can not get off my chair on my own. Take care and God bless.

I'm 57 and I got my licence back in 91/92 and did around 80 hours all up, but for various reasons never went on with it......but have always considered myself a pilot (because I earned that right) and have always felt that one day I will make a comeback!

Similar story. Never had the time and money at the same time required to become an active pilot. After retirement from the fire department, and 4 of 5 kids grown, bought a Cherokee 140/160 and am on the verge of solo (19 hours). No regrets.

Age 53 in 2015 when i completed PP VFR. Loved it. IFR and joined a club (2 pipers and a cardinal) at 54. Learned a lot about planes and flying from the club members. At 55, i sold my club membership and bought into a 25% mooney partnership. Learned more about high performance, complex planes. At 56 i just purchased my own mooney with the rocket conversion. Fly about 400 hrs per yer - old dogs eat new tricks for lunch!

I used to fly a 1968 Cardinal all over. You are right about the two seater comment. Nice looking airplane just wish there was more power.

Congrats! I have the '77 version of the Cardinal, in almost exactly the same color scheme. The Cardinal is a wonderful and stable airplane. It got me through the instrument rating torture drill at age 62. So you're still a youngster. -:) Have fun and enjoy the ride. Forrest

Just came across your channel. I took my first flight lesson last summer, at 60, done 5 lessons now. I’m doing an online groundschool for RPL and hope to complete my lessons next summer. Once you’ve been in the sky, there’s no going back.

When I was 18, I worked for a FBO in Nacogdoches, Texas (east Texas, home of the Stephen F. Austin University Lumberjacks) in that time period and we had a Cardinal also. Everything you described was just like ours. Grossly under powered. The owner upgraded to a 180hp engine with a constant speed prop and we saw very little difference except fuel consumption. The airplane to buy in a Cessna is the 182 Skylane. Now that's a great plane.

The Cardinal is an interesting bird. A little weird to fly and definitely underpowered, but you can take great pictures of stuff on the ground without the struts in the way. I bought a 1973 Cherokee for $42,000 in 2015. I taught my daughter to fly it. She built up 110 hours in it over the next 3 years. I sold it in 2018 for $47,000. Buying an airplane to get your ratings is the SMARTEST way to do it. I keep telling people online about this method, but most don't believe me. These old planes don't decrease in value. You just have to avoid putting an engine in one. That's the biggest "gotcha". Good luck with the Cardinal and good luck finding the centerline!! :)

Beautiful older Cardinal ! I love those airplanes. I logged a lot of time in one, the FBO I worked at owned. The lines of that plane were just sleek and the visibility was great. Yes, they are underpowered and a 180 would sure help. But that aside, you own your airplane ! That’s something few pilots are ever able to say, so congrats and thanks for sharing ! Safe skies my friend ! 🛩🇺🇸

My dad waited until he was 61 to try and get his vfr ppl single. Unfortunately, heart attack at 60 nixed the physical. He was crushed. Can still fly his Kolb Firefly, perhaps even get a Light Sport, but his ppl dream would appear to be dead. Moral is, do it as soon as you can.

Don’t dump too much money into her. Fly the heck out of her... then sell her and get a more powerful aircraft. Updating the dash will cost you around $50-70K. YOU WILL NEVER GET YOUR MONEY BACK OUT OF HER... I know, because I’m dumping $300K into a Aerostar Superstar 700. I will never see that money back again... all the best

Love the Cardinal...My dad had one for about 10 years and then had to hang up his pilots wings due to his age. Great plane and easy to get into with the wide doors and lack of a strut.

Very nice, thanks for sharing the video and your adventures. I have co-owned a 74 Cardinal for the past 5 years and love it! Very stable instrument platform (did my instrument checkride last year at the age of 59). One of the best upgrades we have done so far are BAS inertial reel seat belts. Aside from improved safety benefits, they allow using the excellent Cardinal visibility to the fullest extent.

Great video! I just bought my first plane (1962 C172D) in March 2018. I have the Continental O-300 (145 HP) and it's a dog on hot humid days. I've been a pilot since 2006, but hadn't been flying for several years. But similar mission profile as yours: Time building, working on IFR, ADS-B upgrade (coming in March 2019), etc. Similar operating costs. Congratulations.

Wow, I recognize W29 Bay Bridge airport where I got my private in a Cardinal. Loved that plane. I had the stronger engine and actually took up four people. Many trips to Ocean City in it and the Outer banks of North Carolina. Congrats on your purchase.

FANTASTIC! I'm happy for you, and there's nothing wrong with a Cardinal. It's a comfortable time builder and you'll learn more from flying it than a Mooney, Bonanza or C-210. "Low and slow is the way to go..." and it only took me a 50 year flying career to learn that. So you started at age 50? So What! Forty years ago I took a lady for an hour (introductory flight) to celebrate her 50th birthday. She learned to fly in a Grumman TR-2. The day after she got her Pvt license, she and her husband departed Auburn, CA for a cross country to Key West, Florida and back! She bought a Piper Warrior and I trained her for her instrument ticket. She traded that for a Mooney Ranger (took her instrument checkride in it), and the day after getting her rating, flew form Auburn to Maine, down to Key West thru the New York area (logging about 10 hours of actual instrument time) and back to California. I retired out of a Citation CJ2, twelve years ago now. I would like nothing more, now, than to get something to fly low and slow, navigate by looking out the windows, and fly from one uninproved airport to another. carlynneracing@sbcglobal.net

Congratulations! I have always thought Cardinals were beautiful.

Friendly suggestion; get shoulder harnesses on those seat belts that you are going to replace. I would suggest a 5 point restraint, 4 point restraint at the least. Do not settle for just a strap across a single shoulder. Personally I would not fly in an airplane with only a lap belt for a seat belt. Face planting on an instrument panel will absolutely ruin your day after an otherwise survivable simple mishap; ask me how I know!

Agreed. Your seats need to be taller for your safety...ie: head rests for cervical spine stability. So many GA aircraft seat belts cut into the pilot and PAX jugular and carotid neck areas. At least Cirrus has upgraded their design and installed curved padded dual shoulder belts that avoid critical neck pressure points. Do you plan to change out the seats? I think people were smaller during the Revolutionary War. 😂 Lovely airplane! Congratulations! Going to Oshkosh??

Just found this. Thanks for sharing. I’m turning 53 in a bit and starting my flight training.

Way back when I flew a 1977 Cardinal. I loved it. It not only flew beautifully but looked great. It had the 180 HP engine and a constant speed prop. It didn't exactly leap off the ground -- initial rate of climb was (according to the manual) 840 fpm. Cruise speed at 7,500 feet is listed as 142 MPH at 75% power, burning just over 10 GPH. Not bad for the time. If you upgrade take a look at the RV line. They're extremely popular (10,000 sold!) 2-place easy-to-build kit planes and cost maybe 50 - 100K. The performance is phenomenal; an RV-7A with a 180 HP engine will climb at over 1600 fpm and cruise at about 200 MPH burning as little as 8.5 GPH. (And NO, I'm not a dealer or salesman, just a fan)

I owned Cardinal N3212T for about 3 years. It was a 1967 C177. I disagree regarding not being a 4 place airplane. With 50 gallons of fuel you can trade 20 gallons (120 lbs) and take another person. I too bought it when I had about 200 hours. It is a great airplane. BTW - I like the paint job on your airplane. Looks great.

I love the Cardinal. It is a beautiful plane.

I logged a couple of dozen hours in 68 Cardinal back in the early 90s not long after I got my PPL. Being a bit under powered would have been my only complaint. A friend of mine and I flew it to Willows CA once for breakfast. In a very recent conversation about flying he remembered that flight and specifically said he thought the 177 was pretty cool plane. I thought it was cool too. I’ll add that I am more a fan of the stiff leg versions on the Cardinal. Congrats on your new baby.

Beautiful Cardinal! Sporty, roomy, sleek lines and modern looking...more so than the new Cessna 172/182!👍 Cessna should produce this body, as the new 172 Skyhawk, with the addition of T-handle throttle and Jet-A power plant. Also, its more aerodynamic. (Of course all other modern upgrades too).

Yes it is,; but I would add downturned wingtips and vortex generators to shorten the T.O. distance. I would also add a more powerful engine, like the 200 hp Lycoming I.O. 360 used in the R.G. This will make a real honest aircraft out of it.😉

cardinals are one of the best looking high wing aircraft ever built. Visibility is great... no strut and you can see up and down because the wings are further aft. The door open extremely wide. Congratulations!

Plus the entry/ease is great. I'm getting too old to climb in and out of Cherokee,/Bonanza. Cardinal is the way to go.

If you pull out the back seat, make sure a mechanic calculates a new empty weight & balance (to be legal), and make sure it's even permitted to remove the rear seats (they may be listed on the equipment list, which may make it required for airworthiness. Perhaps a FSDO could issue a waiver)

I own a 1991 Nissan Skyline R32 GTR . I paid $27,000 for it. I've had it for 3.5 years and put about $5000+ into it a year (60% Labor, 40% parts). I think your plane might be a more affordable passion to live with except for maybe the gas prices. I appreciate your videos!

Congratulations, I had a 1968 Cardinal as well and yes, a good two person airplane. Doesn't leap off the runway, not too speedy but easy to fly and visibility great. Turning base and final you can actually see in front of the wing. Easy egress with that big door with sportscar like seating. I wished a window opened for better cooling but a nice platform. Range fair, stable, but in hot desert crossing you kind of had to let it go. But, a reliable good airplane and one that I parted with and will look for more speed next time. Have fun and I hope you have someone to share your experience with! Flying around by yourself as I have mostly is a lost opportunity to share the fun of flight.

Ken Paulsen Yeah I plan to be open with all that just to give everybody else and idea of how much it costs it is expensive but it’s not impossible!

First, congrats! The Cardinal is a wonderful airplane. I personally owned a 68 Cardinal for several years, and I loved it. I only sold because I owned 3 airplanes at the time, and plan to eventually own a later model Cardinal with constant speed prop and retracts. But still, the Cardinal is a much nicer airplane than a Cessna 172, and usually costs less to acquire. Having owned single engine airplanes for over 20 years, I have one fairly straightforward observation. New airplane owners often make the mistake of thinking that the major cost of an airplane is the purchase price and the operational costs, fuel, insurance, hangar etc. What separates an airplane from a car is not how much it costs or how much fuel it uses, it's the maintenance. There is a reason that your Cardinal is nearly as good as a brand new airplane, even though it is 51 years old. It has been maintained ever single year (hopefully) and anything that made it unairworthy was fixed every year. How many 1968 cars are still around? If they had been maintained like airplanes are, there would still be plenty of 1968 cars on the road. The thing to know is that this kind of constant maintenance is very expensive compared to what it costs to maintain a car. Upgrades are an expensive part of the process as you already know...

Currently in a tug-of-war trying to decide on a 180-H.P. 172 or 177/higher H.P. too. (Fixed gear) Love the video updates. Please do keep up this great series.

Wow, I'm glad I found this video. I'm 49 and willing to take flying lessons sometime next year. I can see from your experience it's not expensive. You don't have a powerful with latest glass cockpit aircraft, and you can't fly fast and high, but you can fly.

Congratulations on your Cardinal, and I understand you wanting a 430 but there is no requirement to have a IFR certified GPS to get a instrument rating, And just think about all the fuel you can buy for the cost of a 430, installing, antennas ect...$7500 will pay for250 hours if fuel. The club I'm presently fly with does lots instrument training/flying and neither of the airplanes have a GPS. But I will say a 177 is a great Choice for getting your IR, it's a stable platform that doesn't do anything "fast"...it is much easier to learn to fly approaches in a airplane that you can keep up with.

Ok. Get ready for the 177-150 hp bashers, the 172 is better tribe, etc. Beautiful bird. Every a/c is a compromise; "you can't always get what you wawannt!"- Stones. This is the 172 racer version. A lot to like. Like a Helio Stallion, sitting in front of the leading edge is a great plus for vision in turns. VGs are a great addition and more for the buck mod. I hope you have many flawless hours in the air with her.

As an Australian in 2022, all I can say is that these figures are roughly 1/2 to 1/3 of what I’ve had to pay for my first aircraft (C172N) at 50.

Congratulations and fun video. I had the chance to buy a nice Cardinal and missed it. Wish I had pulled the trigger. I recognize W29 having visited this summer. Nice airport. You should fly down to 2VA3 on a time building flight and watch out glider operations. Let me know and I’ll get you permission to fly in.
