I've looked at replacing my V70 recently. I'm straying close to bangernomics over this year - its 140k in and only worth a couple of grand. Nothing comes close - on the weekend we floated over Rannoch moor loaded with family and bikes, heated seat on, choons on the fabulous stereo and I thought 'nothing comes close to this without spending £20k+'. So it's staying.

My experience exactly, have a 2005 V70 D5 SE Auto in Champagne Gold, which has only done a genuine 99,000 miles with 17 service stamps (6000 miles on average) totally reliable, comfortable, and economical, new cambelt, auxiliary belt and water pump, plus full service, all done at 98,000 miles, was looking to exchange it, but when I looked about to see what I could buy that was as good as this without spending in excess of £10k, so decided to keep until next spring, get it thru the MOT in April then look at it again.

The V70 I bought was as a get me by, as my Saab had given up the ghost with turbo and gearbox issues. Paid a couple of grand for her - 135,000 on the clock, and 13 years old at the time. Four years later, she was still with us. Totally reliable, and a joy - still in the family and going strong with my step-daughter, today. As I gave the V70 to her, I stepped up to an XC90 as a long term investment - again, totally reliable.

V70's are great. Bought one for £200!! Cost me £250 to sort it, drove it for three and a half years and it passed 3 subsequent MOT's with no advisories. However the auto box died. The guy I bought it off gave me £100 for it!! Three and a half years motoring for £350 can't be bad. I've now got another one!

The catalytic converters on these are worth £300 alone, could've actually made money if you broke the car up before scrapping it 👍

Brilliant cars. I used to fly out to Scandinavia years ago for work and all the taxis were merc e class an v70s. The mercs were rattly and noisy but the v70s were amazingly smooth and quiet. A very underrated car driven by very clever people.

I own a 2005 V70 2.4 gasoline with 170hp and automatic. It got 387000km and runs still fine. The best car I have ever owned. Greetings from Germany

i have a v70 from 2004 manual. It also has exactly 387000km like yours and it's great. only something wrong with the long term fuel trims, but i think this is because it has LPG gas retrofitted or maybe the "Luftmassenmesser" is toast. Does yours still run? Greetings also from Germany! ;)

I've just moved on our 1997 V70 which has been in the family for the last 23 years, it got to the point it was actually appreciating in value! In all that time, besides consumables and service bits, it's only needed a track rod end. Prior to that we had a '91 940GL, an '89 740GLE, an '83 244DL and a '77 245DL. We're on the verge of chopping in an XF for the new S60, safe to say we like a Volvo or 2...

I really like these 'bargain basement' videos, Matt - I'm so glad you do them as I love the idea of abandoning the competitive arena of car ownership and going for comfort and economy in which depreciation is irrelevant! 👍

Used to have a 740 7 seater amazing car. Jap gearbox went on it though.! Would like something a bit bigger now… what do you think on a pre facelift xc90? Are they money pits ?

Been driving Volvo’s since 1981, first one a new 245 turbo, drove it for 20 years. After that car V70 all the way. At some point bought a V70 with 350.000 km on the clock, drove another 400.00 km with it! Amazing cars!

Never owned one, but always loved V70, they look so comfortable and practical. Looks like a real bargain that one

Perfect for highways and hauling stuff. I'm tall and lanky, always had a problem with the seats, destroyed my back. Other people say the seats are great so I guess that's just me. In cities and small spaces it's like navigating a scale version of Titanic. Me personally I'd rather get an old Mondeo for driving pleasure, but I can't deny a Volvo V70 would be better value.

Would really like to see a part 2 on this - looks amazingly tidy for a V70 let alone a £300 one! They really do just go on forever if you look after them.

This is awesome! The cheapest Volvo my family ever owned was a 1998 Volvo S70 T5 in Classic Red. We got it for $500 or about £316 with exchange rates at the time. The only reason we got it so cheap was that it was in a fender bender at some point and in needed some serious frame work. Repaired it for another $500 and it was a great car until it got recked. It it saved my dad’s life with only a few bruises and glass in the eyes(telephone pole landed on his windshield). Now we can’t find one for under $1500.

Now this is the content I want. Yoof babbling in supercars in London traffic and rich kids with drone shots of their toys is so passé.

@Uncle Gilbert Give me a 20-year-old Volvo estate any day. I've never paid more than £500 for a solid bit of panzer. Find yourself a decent mechanic who can fix things by hitting it with a hammer, or if it's complicated, hitting it with a bigger hammer, and you're sorted. I couldn't give a flying fornication about flashy, ostentatious sports cars, pretty photography or florid language to describe such vehicles; it's not a fashion parade for me, I just need to get me and my kit from A to B. The beauty of this video is that it's a realistic appraisal of the sort of vehicle that most of us need for day to day work (I'm a gardener, with loads of tools and machines and a trailer) who previously spent 20 years in the antiques biz (so you can imagine why I like Volvos). I get an old Volvo for £500 and I own it. None of these dickheads bombing around in their 'status symbol' Audis own them; they're an albatross around the renters' necks. If a million pounds somehow dropped in my lap tomorrow, my first choice of car would still be an old, beaten up, indestructible Hilux pick-up. Back to the video, I find an appraisal and assessment of a cheap but decent car massively more interesting and relevant than that of some entitled 'influencer' cruising around London in a flashy car hoping to gain more social media followers. I know I'm rambling, but my point is, this was a really cracking, pragmatic video; it was helpful to me as a guy who depends on cars, always old ones, knows nothing about how to buy a car but after watching this feels a little bit more savvy about doing so, and that is why I upvoted and subscribed. Love my '02 V70. It's like owning a beautiful old rolling hotel / barge.

Done very well there Matt, pretty rare car, being the SE Lux spec. Well worth saving and cleaning up, please don't take the radio out with an angle grinder.

A relative of mine has a 2005 diesel version of a v70. Yes it has had its issues (mainly electrical.) It sails through MOTs and has hardly any rust (only some very minor surface rust underneath.) The car has done 230K miles! Would love to see you keep this car and improve/ repair its minor faults. These are very good solid cars.

Well done Matt! Had a V70 SE LUX for 10.5 years. Best car ever by miles. Apart from services it never spent a day off the road in 140,000 miles! Regret selling it. Now have an XC60 2.4 AWD. Set of Michelin Cross Climates fitted and this car goes anywhere in any weather. Great car but miss the V70 like a pair of old slippers. Please do a part 2 to this video 👍👍

I hate you! ☹ The XC60 D5 AWD is one that I covet.

Brought one a few years ago - as a temp - barge. My God it could shift. Found out it had a sports pack! Manual box was just a grand old girl that could hoist its skirts when needed. Well done for saving it. Hope it goes to a good home.

As a Swede myself, it’s always a privilege to let a bearded man from the frozen island that is Britain conduct our Swedish pride with the credibility it oh-so deserves.

That would go for 4 figures usually, even at 18-20 years old Probably not much into 4 figures, but over £1000 nonetheless.

I loved my 2001 V70. It was like driving a sofa. So comfortable even though it drank petrol and turned like the Titanic :D

Those particular V70’s, turning circle aside, are absolutely brilliant. And it’s even ULEZ compliant! Not the worst £300 you’ve ever spent 👍

I looked at a V70R and the turning circle was what stopped me from buying it. It was also far to low. I bought a 3rd gen XC70 instead.

I paid €300 for my 2004 2.0t manual V70 in early 2019. It had 62,000 miles on it. I’ve put almost 30,000 on it in the last 4 years. These cars are rare now in Ireland and only a few pop up per month with high mileage and most are auto or diesel. These are great cars IF you keep the maintenance on the dot. I just replaced the timing belt/serpentine belt and water pump. The alternator was kyboshed so I changed that too. Oil, filters and it was a nice big bill, but after working in the auto industry I still prefer this car to most others I’ve driven. I’d rather no car if I had to drive a modern Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan, Renault, etc. Regarding old cars, a few mechanics warned me against buying an auto, they say have €3000 aside if you do and have €1500 aside for a manual!

One of the best parts of owning my V70, she does her own thing.

That‘s an amazing buy for 300 £ - especially with the 2.4 litre petrol - they are not frugal on fuel but worth it as these engines are almost trouble free. Mine is a 2006 V70 with 250000 km on it . We never had any problems - just maintenance (brakes, suspension, tyres). The undercarriage is still looking almost like new - no rust whatsoever and the drive train is bone dry. The automatic gearbox is an Aisin Warner (Toyota Group) - make sure you flush the ATF after 120000 miles, even if Volvo says it is not necessary.

I had a 2005 V70 2.5T for a couple of years, got me through several harsh Canadian winters trouble free, absolutely loved that thing! It’s an unstoppable Swedish tank really. Great buy Matt!

I traded in my 2009 Toyota Yaris for a 2009 Volvo V70 this week, and I couldn't be happier. Such an amazing vehicle, so incredibly comfortable to drive and even though it's showing its age I just already cannot imagine going back. It's got 190k kilometers (118k miles) on it but still drives as new, I just miss my fancy Android Auto/CarPlay head unit and with the way the car's settings and parking sensors go through the radio I apparently can't put one in this car, but that's a compromise I am happy to make.

Another nice video! I love the insightful honesty that you bring! I never thought I would I would own a Volvo, but was converted when a friend said I could have their old 850 for £150. I was not completely convinced but it turned out to be one of the best cars I've ever owned. I replaced it with a 2005 V70 which I've now had 6 years. 250k & counting, 62MPG (mainly motorway work admittedly). The steering rack failed earlier this year but apart from that it's been really solid. Original exhaust & clutch (fingers crossed!).

The P2 V70 has to be one of the best bargain buys out there today. The Euro3 D5 is virtually bullet proof, I've seen them for sale with over 600,000 miles on the clock and just look at the interior on the one in the vid, it's 18yo and absolutely mint. I owned an '06 V70 that did 248,000 and my current P3 V70 has 143,000 on the clock. Fantastic cars.

Well said. The Euro3 D5 with a manual gearbox is the sweet spot with the P2 I reckon. They just keep on going and going with basic maintenance. We have one in our family, 248k miles, drives great, it’s a well loved old barge that we have become very attached to.

I still miss my S60 D5. Fast, reliable, comfortable, good looking and people seemed to think it was expensive but didn’t hate on it. To date it had the best seats and sound system of any car I’ve driven.

One of the last proper Volvo's, I have had these with 250+k on the clock that still run like a swiss watch, give it an oil change regularly & keep on top of any rust issues, it will make an excellent winter driver. You certainly stole it for £300, I would have happily paid double that!

Loving the hushed voice as you approached the Volvo in the woods. Very David Attenborough 🤫

@@HighPeakAutos great find in my opinion. I had an 05 xc70 go to 498,662 miles and 1 rollover wreck before it called it quits. Saved my sons life in the rollover. Fetched it from the tow yard the day after and the kid drove it 9 months more..

At the risk of jinxing myself I've had a P3 version (the one that's part Mondeo) for 8 years and it's utterly wonderful. It's had its faults but by god it's comfortable. I can and have done 400 miles in one go and got out feeling like I've just been down to the local shop. I shall probably be buried in it.

Coincidentally, I've been looking at these over the last few days, as my own dump-runner X-Type Estate is at the point where it needs some welding doing along the sills for it's MOT. As you say, get an MOT on it, but then keep hold of it for another 300k, I'd have it just to listen to the doors shutting!

Brilliant motor! My 94 850 had that motor and sold it to my mate’s son in 2008. Had 200,000 miles and didn’t leak or burn any oil! Had nothing other than the usual things like brakes, fluids, filters, etc to do to it. You’re right about the seats, Matt! I’ve had Range Rovers, Jags, etc and the seats designed by Volvo are so comfortable! The Rover has the best seating position of any vehicle. When I move back to England in the Spring, sort me out with a nice one please, mate. Cheers!

You should always check the PCV system . If its bad it could be a lot of problems with oil leaks , headgaskets etc . Just start the car , remove the oilcap and place a thin piece of plastic on the opening . If you see that the engine is blowing it away then the PCV system is clocked and should be replaced. If the plastic is sucked down then the system is good . If the PCV system is ok then the engine will last forever if maintained regularly

Even 30 odd years since I owned a 740 estate, I still miss its comfort, space, load lugging ability. Had an office 6ft 6” roller shutter file cabinet in the back with the doors closed. If the team were at hq they all wanted me to drive why so they had room to sleep after meetings……. Don’t miss the old 4 speed auto box or the non variable 22 mpg….

Great cars. I had an XC70 for a year. Totally reliable, cavernous, highly spec'd (even had the TV and the nav used in Aston's until recently). The only let down and reason for sale was the mpg: On a cold morning with a short journey I was averging less than 10mpg 🤣

A proper car. Always liked the V70 but never had the pleasure of owning one…… 👍🏻

I really enjoy your videos Matt. Thank you for posting. My mechanic bought a v70 Cross Country for £400 to use as an everyday work horse. Would love you to do similar with an 0lder xc90 (I watched your 2012 xc90 review)

Got one of these as my daily at the moment done 260k but not without its foibles. Lovely motor and still returns 50mpg. Nothing comes close to those seats! Looking forward to a part 2! 😀

Of course everything works. I don't know how Volvo did it. 123k on my S40, I really love how well it drives. I keep wanting to upgrade to a later model, but I keep thinking... why? Great video, Matt. I'd love to see a part 2.

Hello from Sweden. I bought my S40 in 2005 and "upgraded" it to a new Volvo XC40 a few months ago. Absolutely nothing was wrong with the S40, it was a great car for 16 years, but I felt that it was time to move on. Have had my XC40 for three months now and the car is a dream, absolutely love it. The car dealer sold "my" old S40 in two days since it was in a very good condition and the prize was right. Some Volvo models are pure gold.

We did this, a couple of years ago, and we were amazed at how good the darned thing is! Not just how well it's screwed together, but how efficiently it burns fuel.

Wonderful car. Had one for 2 years to hump my golf buggy, as the space with the seats down is massif. Bullet proof and great ride.

I bought one this June and I LOVE IT! 2.4 Classic (last model year) with only 130,000km which is nothing for these cars. It's in perfect shape (except a few scratches and chips in the paint, nothing major) now. I fixed it up after I bought it, it just needed rotors and pads all around (previous owner didn't drive it a lot so they got pretty rusty), a new windshield which I got off the insurance, and I did a timing belt replacement and service. It's very healthy and should now be able to go many, many more KM:s. It could very well be my last "proper" ICE vehicle as a daily driver. I plan on keeping it a long time. These vehicles are tanks. Sure, things may go wrong with it, but when something goes wrong it's usually minor things that are more of annoyances rather than "must fix:es". The 2.4 is especially reliable since it's lacking the turbo of the 2.5T:s and doesn't have as thin cylinder walls as the 2.5T has. Parts are cheap here in Sweden too.

This is worthy of a “living with” or road trip to Spain type video… you know you want too!

I have had 3 V70’s in the past including the T5 version of this model … all have been 100% reliable… love these cars … apart from the turning circle of course…. Would love to see what it needs , if anything for its MOT …

Hi, the engine system service light may have come on because there’s too much oil in the car. Worth checking as this can be an easy fix. To reset it I believe you have to drive the car for 50 miles. This has worked on loads of XC90/XC70s. Great content!

That generation of V70 are well solid. Only negative is the same turning circle as the Titanic.

I’d love love love to buy this off you, I’ve wanted a v70 for as long as I can remember and since taking hiking and camping up this has always been the dream to take on long journeys north! Amazing price

The only Swedish car I have ever owned was SAAB 9000, 28 years ago, my parents had a Volvo - back in the seventies, they were keen on the safety factor and thought it was quite a luxury car. The SAAB made me appreciate luxury and performance. I like recent models that are no longer ‘a box on wheels’. I still love my Jag though.

The amount of time I spend on auto trader looking for cars under £500, that I don’t need but convince myself I do 😂 this would be one of them

My old 2005 S60 D5 hit 200k last week. She's still going strong. Had the cambelt and waterpump changed with her last service. Find if you look after them, theyll look after you. She set me back £1400 3 years ago with 160k. Best buy ever.

I have been toying with getting an old Volvo myself enough room for the whole family and reliable, sadly cant find any for £300 🤣

I'd imagine you won't, after all that's a part exchange price he's driving. Even then a bargain, look at the other one he got caught with. Swings and roundabouts with cars, you win some and loose some.

He did say let's see what £300 in the UK will buy you, when most people are not in the position of taking part exchanges against more expensive vehicles. I would love to be able to pick up a car for this price, however I wouldn't want the grief of owning a 2nd hand car dealership to get the opportunity.

@@philtowle4683 well exactly. If that guy had sold it himself he'd almost certainly of wanted a lot more. Dealers get them cheap because people don't want the hassle of selling them. I've done it both ways like many people. It is grief and takes time to sell a car, plus having people round your house with cash changing hands etc. As long as I'm buying a replacement and the dealer gives me a half decent offer then I'll trade it in, but you have to be spending a lot of course to make it worth their while. They'll farm them out if they consider the car not suitable for their lot to someone they know, or alternatively make a bit on the pitch they own if they deem it fitting. Punters always pay a premium because they feel safer, having a bit more protection when buying from a trader. Also of course there is the perception that the vehicle will be of better quality than getting one privately.

Good fun, awesome to see the local backdrop now in Autumnal spheres and 300 notes for this Swedish battleship, "not bad". Great engine sounds, cool HPA video!

They're bloody brilliant.....everybody needs one in their life! I just did 300 miles in my D5 averaging 57 mph and showing 57.4 mpg average!....I cannot imagine getting by without one. I never intended to have mine as long as I have but I can't find a better replacement....

But do they suffer the same DPF problems etc as other modern diesels do?

@@gtibruce Mine is a 2005 D5 and has no DPF, but I have just googled it and a DPF was introduced in May 2005 one month after mine was registered ! so if you want pre-DPF car then get one advertised with the163 bhp engine, it's the 185 bhp engine that has the DPF apparently, do as I did and get it remapped to the 185 bhp engine, but without the need for a DPF.

With the crazy UK prices, decided to go the Japanese import route. Currently awaiting a 2009 V50 2.4i with 48k on the clock. Very nearly went for the V70 2.5T as not much difference in fuel economy, but sharing it with my other half, so thought the compact nature of the V50 would be better suited as an all rounder.

Did you do a V70 before, right? Always a pleasure to watch them on the road, here in Honduras they're pretty rare to see on the road, parts are scarse and service too; great cars, specially the old ones as the video's, congrats on the review 👏🏻👏🏻

Definitely need a part two 👍 (I’m a bit concerned though about you picking up cars in dodgy looking woods though! 😆)

Had that engine in a old S40 many years ago…….that V70 sounded like a sweet auld beast - good shout getting that one

I bought my V70 15 months ago and have loved driving it. It may not be super economical with mpg but it is so smooth, practical and solid on the road.

I bought one of these 07 plate 2.4 Diesel in june to drive 2 big dogs and I must say I'm very impressed with built quality of it. Seats are soo comfy!! My daily is F07 but Volvo puts smile on my face every time I get a chance to drive it. 100% recommend it.

Love this channel. Kept my sanity during lockdown

My Aunt has a 2004 Volvo and whenever I get in it I'm reminded often about why people get them. They are very solid and with the Cross Country model she has, they are great in the wintertime. I live in the states where wagons aren't as popular, but I can't imagine why. Practically, they are just as good as crossovers if not better. They offer good boot space but they drive more like a car, instead of a lumbering hunk of metal. They are safer as well. An SUV is prone to rollovers, but wagons are not. I just don't get why people in my country have an aversion to this style of car

Worked in a Volvo dealership during their reign and I loved these and the S60's. Super resale value.

Were else on u tube can you watch a honest review of a £300 car, refreshing! Well done.

I ran an S60 2.0 5cyl petrol.Totally agree with you re seats.Clocks do go on these.PX it for a Merc ML..wish I'd kept the Volvo.Love these sort of Video's Matt.Top Man.

Drive that over the tamar bridge and its £1500 the second you get over, in Cornwall they pay up to 5x UK price

Had a 2002 V70 with a similar spec to this. Brilliant build quality (better made car than the later Ford based P3) and I personally also like that generation design. Sadly the radiator coolant mixed with the gearbox oil and wrote it off. It still remains the only car I really miss today... These V70's don't handle or ride very well but are uber comfortable and that Dolby Pro Logic stereo is immense.

I love the V70! You had a lucky find! I bought one for just under £400 v70 2.5 petrol auto turbo! Great in winter with traction control!but watch the Windows and coil packs! My Windows used to stick open! Half way coming down the A1 and it was winter I almost froze to death! Great long distance too! And never failed an mot!! Then some little speedy gonzalous ran into me and no more V70! The engine is super strong and saved me from 6ft under! And I'm looking for another one!! Good luck!

Had a 2004 V70 td5 back in 2009 to 2012. Best car I've had.

I run a 2004 S80 with the 3.0 6 cylinder inline engine - miles of smiles and whilst I have had to spend on a few of the system computers it is still as comfortable for those long distance journeys and I can give other drivers a shock as I leave them behind in an old Volvo!
