I Bought a Titanic Era Couture Gown ( OMG 😭) / Unboxing Antique Edwardian Women's Clothing

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I bought a 1909-10 (Titanic-Era) couture evening dress for cheap and I basically lost my mind when I opened up the box. I hope all of you Edwardian enthusiasts are ready for a shockingly well preserved Coquenhem & Cie Black silk chiffon goodness that is coming your way. Cause this antique dress is *stunning*.
If you've ever been curious about how couture gowns were made during the early 1910s, this video will help uncover a lot of their (insane) secrets. How this dress has survived in such good condition is truly a mystery. Dressmakers, couturiers, and seamstresses in the early 1900s were some of the bravest makers I think that have ever existed because silk chiffon shouldn' be able to withstand this much weight. I hope all of you fashion historians, historical costumers, seamstresses, and Titanic history and film fans will enjoy this unboxing. This piece is truly a treasure.
We make a passing reference in the video, but this gown was made using almost identical techniques found in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion 2: Englishwomen's dresses and their construction c. 1860-1940. It's currently out of print, but the School of Historical Dress will be re-releasing the book in the future.

I am french and I am not sure how to pronounce Coquenhem either. It seems to be from Lorraine and was earlier spelled "Coguenheim" which makes much more sense. I'm not sure how the parisians of last century butchered it... I would go with something like "Koken hem" myself, probably not how they pronounced it, but it's a french mispronounciation of a germanic name anyway...

I believe you are correct in this. I worked at the Bath Museum and was taught to pronounce it 'Kokenhem' with the same rhythm as you'd say 'Go Get'em'. If it was originally 'Kogenhem' that would make complete sense for the changes in accent.

    A) The outtakes are amazing! B) Holy Cannoli, BatAbby!!! That dress is just...my brain fails to conjure a word that can adequately describe its wondrous nature. That’s a whole lot of words to say, “l’m speechless,” no? Wow! The fact that you’re trying to find it a home in a museum is exactly why I just adore you. Thank you for sharing it with us. I’ve been obsessed with the Titanic since 1982. On the 70th anniversary of its sinking, April 15, 1982, my class (2nd grade) went out to the field and measured out the length of the Titanic...my poor little 7 year old brain was incapable of understanding how something so big could be lost. I also had no grasp of how huge the ocean really is. I started learning everything I could! When they found it three years later, I was glued to the TV. I can’t count how many times I watched James Cameron’s movie, not so much for Jack and Rose, but because he literally built a 3/4 Titanic right down to the china and the silverware, using (mostly) the companies who built her originally. The 1890’s through the late 19 teens is my favorite time period. My great-grandparents were getting married and starting their families, and I heard the stories from my grandparents. I love seeing their childhood memories brought to life. I just jumped to the $10 tier... I can’t wait to see more!!

I was living in Southampton when the Titanic film came out. They vamped up the Titanic museum and seeing the personal objects , including letters sent to loved ones before the disaster, of regular people, especially the staff/crew had me in tears. I love your unboxings! You're awesome! On side note my family was very wealthy and or aristocratic in Eastern Europe. My maternal grandfather's family three weeks before cancelled their trip on the Titanic because his found out she was pregnant with his brother at 49. My grandfather would have 4 years old if he had been on it as a first class passenger. All my great-grandparents owned haute couture clothing from Paris (my mother's paternal grandmother in a Worth gown with a huge hat, she was 6'1"). Even my maternal grandparents did. A lot of my maternal grandmother's clothing was donated to museums. When she came to Canada in 1931 [she was a first class passenger; and yes her boat almost hit an iceberg (and we have the picture of the of this on the deck) and it was a White Star Line ship,The SS Megantic (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Megantic) on it's last crossing in May 1931(she arrived on May 25, 1931 in Quebec] , her and her father made a three month stop for her traveling trousseau. Labels included: Chanel and Lavin. She told me of the experience being fitting in the fashion salons (never had this experience). My maternal grandparents were both born in the Edwardian Era and dressed by their servants before coming to Canada. My maternal grandfather came to Canada (most aristocratic were lost by the end of WWII) in 1950. He flew British Airways because he hated boats.

Your delight over this dress is infectious and it made my Sunday. You are a brave lady trying to pronounce that name on camera. it still took me a second to work out a French pronunciation because the name isn’t typical French. The gue gives a kind of swallowed guh sound (in English, rogue has maintained the sound from the French origin) and you break after vowels, rather than consonants like we do in English. I would go with Coguh-nem (long o, barely audible guh). Just in case you get another piece from this designer and need to say it on camera again...although your attempts were very entertaining :)

There was room, but there wasn’t enough buoyancy, which was the actual issue. Which, as Lindsay Ellis points out, is beside the point. The narrative needs him to sacrifice his spot on the door for her, and so he does. Though there was a cut scene in which another passenger wants to get on with Rose, and Jack prevents him, saying that it won’t float with two people on it. So there was an explanation (whether that holds up to actual physics or not) within the story for why Rose was the only one on the door.

First, your guest star is a fun addition to your episode and really interesting to hear you both discuss the garment together! I also thought the, I need to phone a friend scene is too relatable. That could be a super cute occasional way to add to the channel. We all relate to that on a daily almost, or maybe that’s just me. 😊Second, for those of us who are less familiar with the styles of eras gone by and how this particular garment actually looks worn. (The examples you add in certainly help to illustrate that!) To get your best estimation and vision of what this particular garment might have looked in its glory and how it could have been styled with hair and accessories would be mind blowing. Recreating this beauty sounds like it is not for the reasonably sane person to attempt so an artistic rendering that could illustrate “her” as worn and accessorized for those of us desiring to see it like I’m sure you do in your head. I haven’t read through all comments or explored the patreon(sp?) platform so my apologies if this has been addressed previously. Love your channel and think you are fabulous. As a French, you are forgiven. Even me and friends have a discussion on how to pronounce the final "m". But it's the "co" of co*k , "gu" like the "g" in game, "en" like the letter "n" (maybe the french prononciation for 1) "h" is silent and "em" like the letter "m" or like the 1 in my language. One day, i wan't to make a video about how the french-imported words in sewing activities are pronounce here ^^'

I am a bridal seamstress and I find it fascinating how you can see the return of old techniques like the ones used to support this gown in the new dresses. Yes they are modified but their intent and purpose is the same. I know I went to using waist stas as soon as strapless came back in with a vengeance! The weighted hems kept the light fabrics from puffing out like horsehair hems make them puff more. I would seriously enjoy copying this gown as a bridal dress. Can you imagine that beadwork done in iridescent silver lined beads and pearls? I can. Would be a wow bridal gown for sure!

This is a lovely gown. You're so lucky to be able to own it. The beading reminds me of my grandmother's wedding gown. It was made in 1920 and it was less fitted than this and entirely hand made by my grandma and her mother in pale peach cotton with some matching silk ribbon trim (common working folk here) and fully beaded in intricate art-deco patterns with peach and brown glass and brass beads and included beaded fringe at the cap sleeves and hem. - -Sort of a modest "flapper dress". It was not lined and needed a chemise under it, but my grandma had since "used up" the original chemise. It weighed a literal ton! I only saw it once in the 1980's when I was a kid. It was beautiful and I wish I had it. Grandma had dug it out because the original wedding venue was having an centennial and photos of the gown were taken for the local paper, along with a reprint of their wedding photos. My grandma donated the dress to a museum later, but I don't know which one.

The dress is GORGEOUS! I'm just curious how this dress will be stored, since it is so perfect and old). Will it be in an temperature and humidity controlled room? Should this be in a museum, since it's so perfect? Can "normal" people do it justice with caring for it in the correct way? I'm just wondering if it wouldn't be safer to live it's life in an museum...

And oh boy do I have Titanic dreams! That first afternoon outfit is still my favourite movie or tv costume of all time. And the truly amazing editing and the shot itself does play into that, but even without the grand reveal, it would still be my favourite. It’s also perfectly historically accurate, because that exact afternoon suit was in a fashion plate earlier that year. The attention to detail on Titanic costumes was out of this world. I wish all movies could be so lovingly costumed.

I am SO impressed that all that heavy beading didn't shred the chiffon! And how strange it is that so many (presumably) black threads fade to brown. Brown threads in this video, brown threads in Bernadette's mantle video, and brown threads on two extant beaded black things I have too.

Truly colorfast black dye has always been really hard to achieve. Even now, sometimes modern clothes will fade to brown. Probably the biggest thing with the threads on this dress is that they are likely different fibers from the fashion fabric, and would have needed different dyes than the silks.
