Rangerover-itis has struck again. This time it caused me to buy a 4.2 Supercharged Range Rover (against my better judgement). Having driven it now for a couple of weeks; I'm genuinely confused. Some days I think it's utterly pointless. Other times I think it's perfect. Do you fancy hearing my rambling thoughts on it for fifteen minutes? If so, you're in luck.

Drive a Land Cruiser or a Lexus Lx, it feels even better than the range rovers to drive. The incredible driving position, king of road feeling and indestructible nature. im not making this up but if i had a choice my first car would be the Lexus Lx and my second car will be a Range Rover. Im from UAE, here Land Cruiser is the bigger 200 series, the ones u guys mostly get is the smaller 150 series Land Cruiser or more commonly known as Land Cruiser Prado which is what i drive

I have the 2011 4.4 TDV8 L322 and every time it goes wrong I look and look for a ‘reliable alternative’ and every time I get it back from the garage and drive it away, I remember there is NOTHING else that ticks all the boxes that mine does. I think this 4.2 Supercharged engine just simply perfect. It's just there to give you the power what you really need and not more than that. It's never going to be a race car or even quickis as you've said but it's gonna be dynamic, vigorous that no one ever can stop you. You can just reach your desired speed with the most elegant way from any RPM . No laggs.

I own a 4.4 V8 Diesel autobiography. I've owned 6 years now. I use it weekends and long trips. I have never had one breakdown with it . Granted every year it gets a service from a mechanic I've known for 20 years who I know will do a thorough job. You have to understand when you buy one parts are expensive and running costs aren't cheap. Mines been used for friends weddings , Prom nights etc. There isn't one day I regret owning it and all the toys still work perfectly too. Moral is buy em maintain them properly and there'll be a great servant

Being from the US I always wondered why MPG was so much higher relatively in GB, and now - after you qualified your MPG with the Imperial Gallon note - I get it now. It never made sense to me, but the Imperial gallon being roughly 1.2 US gallons the additional 20% somewhat explains the differences. Also I realize you guys have far more engine choices especially regarding diesel. I wish we had more of those available here frankly, but Americans just don't buy them - in cars anyway. That said, our fuel prices are significantly lower and allows us to thumb our noses at fuel economy more so than in GB/Europe I suppose. To be sure, 12 MPG (even in US gallons) is really bad LOL. Great video yet again. Despite the MPG love the SC Range Rover. She's a beautiful automobile.

Comments like this come from people who've never driven one, let alone owned one, but they claim to know dozens of 'friends' who have had disasters. I've had five RR and they've been very reliable, yes five one every decade or so since 1972. In fact they have only one fault, and its not unreliability, its fuel consumption. All the rest is perfect, just perfect.

Have you checked in the passenger side dash as I thought all L322's have a second cup holder above the courtesy light below the fresh air vent, there should be a pop in/out cup holder there which is adjustable depending on the diameter of the cup/bottle? My last 2 RR's did!

Hi, can I first say how refreshing your videos are, job well done. Once drove the TD V8 a friend had as I was considering buying it, but found for me it was just a little bit too laid-back and disconnected from the road like a limo I suppose, but I am a petrol head I really always had performance cars but now unfortunately blessed with a bad back problem! So I suppose that was never going to work LOL. After having an X5M for one year which was very quick but the seats were so uncomfortable I swapped it for a 63 plate L320 5.0 RRSSC autobiography and absolutely love it. I think the difference is with the sport versus FFRR is its ...Well more sporty, so the engine doesn’t feel so out of place, In fact I think for me it makes the car, but couldn’t imagine why you would put it or previous version in a full fat Range Rover or for equally why you would put it in a Disco 4 which we also have (not that they did do with the s/c engine) but what a frightening thought! 😂. just for the record getting about 17mpg around town & upto 26mpg motorway ...... Keep up the good work!!

Steven Jackson thanks for your comments! I love the sport too, especially the S/C, like you say it suits the sport better. I’m a big X5 fan, but the suspension is too firm on the newer models. In the market for a 5.0 L322 now (I don't do much mileage and have other more frugal cars for long journeys) wouldn't have a diseasel as I hate the smell, travel into London sometimes and don't tow. Good review along with the Harry’s Garage one on his RR - as you say lots of cars have faults and a 2.5 tonne luxury car is going to have more to go wrong than a Honda Jazz so you have to keep it in context with its competition - 7 series, S-Class and other luxury SUVs. Nice way to travel if you can afford it.

My mum recently bought a 2014 Vogue and I had it for a month before export. Absolutely loved it and I have to say I have never felt that special driving a car before- I've driven Mercs, Beemers, Audis but this was just on another level. Worse still, I drove a 19 plate Landcruiser at the start of the year- yet I still felt better in the Range. However in that month the parking break had an issue- had to replace it. Found a genuine used part for £100, labour from an Indi mechanic was £150 so £250 all in. Also one of the fog lamps went so that needed replacing , small job £60 all in. I certainly agree that Range Rover unreliability is exaggerated however when big things go wrong with these Range Rovers they can be expensive. Funnily enough I am in the market myself for an SUV to ferry my family around and I have been pulling my hair out trying to decide between a 2010 Sport and a 2011 Touareg. I think I will just go for it and get the Sport.

Isn’t it true that the 2006, Supercharged is the “sweet spot” and the least problematic and most reliable of all the L322 models? The right reliable engine, the right reliable gearbox, the manual handbrake, and fewer electronics. Also “Be honest, some of you could start an argument in an empty room,” was mint!

My preference for the petrols is mainly down to the introduction of L.E.Z’s (now known as Lezzie zones in my house) where diesels will require euro6 status (65 plate on & way out of my price range). Might be another consideration for the future. Keep up the good work.

Also, the L322 is about half a ton heavier than a Cayenne. And although I love the German SUVs, even those of them on air suspension (like my own), none of them ride like the RR. That extra weight just flattens any road, and translates into a seriously plush ride. My colleague has a 4.2SC on LPG. It's true that he gets significantly better "relative" mpg but it was an expensive installation so you'd have to factor into your decision how many miles you'd have to do to recoup that cost. On these older cars, I doubt people buy them intending to keep them for a long time. Surely they can only be for second cars (not many miles / special occasions), or for time-limited ownership to "get it out of your system"? Ultimately though, I think you're right that the TDV8 makes more sense. Running a big heavy diesel SUV around doesn't make your wallet squirm when you floor the accelerator. At 12mpg, every time you stepped into it, you'd question whether the journey was worthwhile... and I'm not one to normally worry about economy (I've never owned a car that can do more than 25mpg).

One thing to point out tho,if you’re worried about mpg...don’t buy a range rover, large and regular fuel bills are part and parcel of ownership, shouldn’t complain about it really. And I think the word “waft” was invented by Landrover FOR the Rangerover. ..... there’s no other car to make you feel like you do when you drive one,I’ve had 10 😯.... I respect your opinion about this been a waste of money and the TDV8 been better, but the Supercharged V8 engine in my opinion makes this car more gangster like, more fun at overtaking (especially off roundabouts) and the sound is certainly something to live for. So I’d certainly choose this for now (when I’ve had enough of my X-Type), however having not been out in a TDV8 or 4.4 V8 Petrol, I cant really comment on those.

My mind isn't entirely made up with the 4.2S/C. Part of me loves it, the other part thinks its a bit of waste. Theres no denying its presence on the road though. And the noise is superb :)

Range Rovers are meant to be lofty, luxurious, and just quick enough to barely get out of its own way. Enjoy.

Well the RR SC is quick enough to drop most other fast SUVs and sedans. The only problem is that most owners are unused to flooring the throttle. There are no slow vehicles. Only slow drivers.

Absolutely agree love the car but not the fuel economy I've had the v8 4.4 and as you after 2yrs i just thought its such a waste of fuel so looking now at the v8 diesel, good video yet again!

I do understand the appeal of Range Rovers, I had a ride in one many years ago and it definitely made an impression. I don't think I could deal with the sheer size and the thirst of them though. There's quite a lot of narrow roads around here and parking in my street is tricky, it would be more of a worry than a pleasure most of the time. I might consider an Evoke in a few years.

I'd say get one if you want one but be careful where you have work done to it and just enjoy it, I used to work at a valet for Heathrow T5 and there wasnt a day that went by where I didn't drive atleast 1 range rover they are so popular and as a valet I found them to feel no more cumbersome than a Q7(infact the Q7 feels fat) and they are really not bad to park just hard to get in and out of if it's a tight space. I only noticed a few faults like air suspension or some other warning message but they seemed to drive lovely regardless.
