    Absolutely love this 2 stroke exercise of genius. If you’d like to shift the transmission while you’re driving a dog box conversion would be pretty easy for that 5 speed,pretty much just a slick shift setup like you’d do a Muncie, A-833, Toploader or T-10 trans. Heck,if you shop around there are plenty of those RX7 or RX8 transmissions around from the road course guys that have those trans faceplated. If you want to shift it at wide open throttle after either of those mods just add a strain gauge on the shifter wired to a timer that kills the ignition for a few milliseconds and you’re in business. With those updates you can take of in any gear and up shift at wide open all the way to fifth. 👍

    My Formula Student team used a snowmobile engine with the CVT clutch. There is a lot to be gained in performance by optimising the weights and springs in the primary & secondary CVT spools respectively. If they're available for the CVT you have might be worth buying a weight & spring either side of whats in there and doing a bit of trial & error.

    having helped rebuild and work on rotary engiens many times over the years thanks to friends who are into such things, they can be incredibly reliable given you treat it right and understand what your using.... honestly, the rx7's engines can be quite impressive, and, i have seen well treated ones go over 100k miles without a rebuild, (those also were given the oiler mod so proper oil for buring could be used rather then oil pan oil, thats designed not to burn and often leave deposits or fed with mixed fuel with 2 stroke oil already in it.. outside that... just understand what you own and how to treat it... for all the shade people throw... they can be alot of fun.

    I've always been a fan of rotaries the way they run and drive is incomparable to any other car, most people who throw shade have never even sat in a rotary car and its sad to see people jump on the hate band wagon just because everyone else is, these engines don't deserve the hate they get and i hope someday that will change

Use the plastic interior panel wedge tools as prying tools to open up any potential gaps to assist in getting the RTV where it needs to be and don't skimp on squish out, it is all the better.

    Just helping out here: For the motor mounts, I suggest looking for mounts that apply to a 1975 Volvo 242. It's just a hockey puck with studs on both sides and a steel plate on one side. I used one in my Mazda B2000 build when I dropped an OMC Cobra 2.3L (almost identical to the Pinto engine) under the hood because the original Ford Courier mounts in the parts catalog weren't the correct part. It's the same truck, just a different grille and came with the same basic 2.3L from factory. It came up with the vertical Mazda mounts, not the flat horizontal ones for the Courier. Two pieces of angle iron and the Volvo hockey puck got the passenger side mounted securely. Just for reference, the Anchor brand part number is 2427. I'm not affiliated with ANY corporation, mind you.

    Alternatively, use the mounts for a 164... A little stiffer, but a lot softer than the solid mounts that were used in this application. They also have the studs centered, instead of offset, which is how the 1975 240 mounts (also used on later 240s on the driver's side with the overhead cam engines) are configured. The 164 mount is Volvo p/n 1206614, versus the 274110 Volvo p/n for the 1975 B20 mount.

    Adapt a factory flywheel to the snow mobile clutch with better bearings so you can clutch and shift and mount the engine like you thought to the transmission would not be very hard at all

  • @davelowets

    @davelowets

    😆 The clutch moves... It gets narrower at high RPMs. You could NOT attach a flywheel to the clutch, and expect that to work. You'd have to lose the clutch all together, and attach the flywheel directly to the bare engine output shaft.

    The fabrication quality of the engine mounts, hood, and exhaust system look really good. Who knows what other cool projects the builder has come up with. Might be a good car for rally cross, but a shame it isn't practical as a daily driver. My suggestion would be to cover any metal inside the cabin with dynamat, like what is used under carpets and behind panels of powerful car stereo installations to cut down on the excess vibration. if you want to keep the cost down maybe contact cement and carpet remnants could make riding in it more bearable. Your wife or girlfriend likes the car which is always a plus.

    Personally i'd ditch the CVT and direct drive using an adapter plate with clutch to the original 5spd box. Make some decent mounts so it doesn't rattle your bones and clean it up a bit. It's a great idea, however with some polishing touches could be a really cool car

    Same here, while the car looks pretty fun and took some creative design to execute, it once again hurts the RX-7s and reinforces the reputation that these cars in their stock form are "waiting to blow up" and that the car itself is "only for for swapping something better in" even if its an objectively worse engine, i love these cars and the rotaries but they are very misunderstood and while i love engine swaps i would prefer to see MORE rotary swaps instead of rotary replacements

    I don't see too many of these vintage RX7's around my area, so when something like this is sitting in a parking lot come summer time I like to take pics. So hopefully you don't hack it up too much. Would it be possible to fix the expansion chamber so it's not doing such a sever 90-degree turn? I haven't had too many snowmobiles myself so I'm not familiar with all the engines. If this thing has reeds in it and not some weird power-valve setup like in the Rotax engines you might be able to get some more go out of it by putting some performance reeds in it. Also get yourself some Dyna-Mat or something similar by any maker and do up the inside panels of the car. It'll help big time with soaking up your vibration problem. If it works for subwoofers it should help with this. :)

    There were some cars back in the 1970's that used a similar CVT to what a snowmobile use. Made by a company called DAF (mostly known today for making trucks), and later adopted by Volvo in their early 340 range. The transmission was called "Variomatic" I did get a good laugh when I saw that you had to pull-start the engine. That is something you never see on a car 🤣

The buzzer at 7000 RPM, the way that you can spin that rotary, the way that they sound, but I've driven the same car with a Ford 302, a turbo Honda K series, a turbo Ford 2.3 Lima 4 cylinder, and almost any engine makes that car feel SO much better than the 11A.

Only things I would definitely change is it's almost a necessity that you got to have some rubber motor mounts. And I would probably try to rework the exhaust that way it's a little more free-flowing. And then if it's carbureted definitely a jet kit in the future. If it's EFI definitely a tune. Either way this was such a bad ass video, absolutely made my day too!
