I bought a smartphone in Brazil: Let’s Explore!

Ғылым және технология

I came to Brazil to visit my family and in the process started a hunt for a smartphone.. lets take a look at what we found! Also, we are visiting Florianopolis, Brazil. This city is the capital and located South of Sau Paulo.
Here is a dumb phone you can game on, the Cat S22 Flip:

Here is my favorite mini smart phone, the Jelly 2:

hey guys wanted to note a couple things! 1st, this is not an attempt to make Brazil look bad? I went to several shops and they were all selling J series phones so I bought one. I know people here use flagships and other phones than this.. it’s cool J2 can still be used in 2023! 2g and 3g are a thing here for now, and I was celebrating that. 2nd, sorry for the audio. I recorded the voiceover in a closet of our hotel at 2am.. but I didn’t want to miss an upload! -Johnzoid

The only reason Brazilians use these old phones is because the cost of a smartphone is very expensive. An S23Ultra basically costs around 5 minimum wages in Brazil.

yes, inflation doesn’t leave much left to spend on electronics. my wife was born and raised there- moved to USA about 8 years ago. she’s explained and expressed this to me- and her family who is still there tell us the cost of cellular and electronics makes it harder.

Brazil is gone more nuts with the taxation, I sent some phones to my Brazilian wife a while ago and she paid pretty penny in import taxes for those. Now the taxes are even steeper and the shipping is massively slowed down as customs are practically inspecting everything that enters the country.

I'm still using this as my main phone, and I would have to say that this phone was amazing for it's time. I have the 8GB version and it's really hard for me to install applications on it even after I debloated it cause the Android itself takes about 4.54GB of storage and I somehow have all of my apps installed on the remaining 3.2GB storage. The battery is also not that reliable even after changing it many times and instantly dies after reaching about 50%. But still, the software is surprisingly fast and optimized and can run smoothly. Even as of right now, it can still perform daily tasks and browse social media almost without any problem! Loved the vid tho!

Just as an addendum: There's probably no Custom Rom with recent Android versions in the market, I searched a lot to get one running on my dad's old J2 Prime that he gave me to sell (never sold it, using it as a small home server with UserLAnd lol). The only rom with a recent android is a LineageOS 14.1 (I think) that doesn't work great (probably it lacks a lot of Mediatek's drivers), so it's a no go. But fortunately there's a lot of other roms for it with Android 6 and some customizations.

Battery drains too quickly cuz its processor is always at 100% usage, cant record with the camera, etc. The developer used to update that rom every month, and then apply the same changes to a lineage os 15 rom he was also working on. Most of the people just uses a phone to send WhatsApp messages and voice messages (yes, we do it a LOT) and to post dumb things on Facebook or Instagram. Younger people usually has more "recent" phones as they knows more about the technology itself. Well, about the used smartphone market we consume it almost every time, we usually can find some good deals and trade those old phones for a (not so) new one, we just need to keep and eye because we suffer a lot from cellphone robbery, so robbers usually sells it on the Internet or on Facebook Marketplace. sometimes they sell it for some illegal stores or for technicians who wants to use some parts of the robbed phone

these phones are still sold here because new flagships are really expensive, and can vary from 3 to 10 minimum wages, so most people look for cheap and functional phones as a necessity for talking with family and friends and using services that are more available digitally, and most keep using these phones until they have to replace it (mainly because of apps like whatsapp and facebook not working with older software and hardware) and yes, mobile tv apps were a common thing back in this era of smartphones, where the phone came with a little antenna which you plugged into the headphone jack and tv channels would pick up

A couple of things, newer higher capacity SD cards don't work with older technology unless it's refomated to something like fat32, as for the tv app, in certain countries in Asia like Korea and Japan they broadcast using a different technology for ota tv. We had something similar in u.s. that didn't take off, called atsc, 1.0 m/h (Mobile/handheld). Tv handhelds are niche, but they might become a thing with atsc.3.0

Brazil uses the same tech as in Japan for TV Broadcasting, so probably a Japanese phone with TV will probably work in Brazil's TV networks.

While you are here in Brazil it's really a good oportunity to get old tech. A lot of people like me still like and use things like the PS2. And you got scammed on this phone, It should be a lot cheaper on used markets like Facebook marketplace or Shopee. These guys from street stores scam people a lot here. Buying from a normal person instead of a store It would cost 100 R$

That is literally my Grandpa's old phone, Those are cheap J2 prime knockoffs I'm pretty sure (most of the time), they may have 8gb of internal storage but in reality they only have 4gb, and what's worse is it cuts down your storage even more because there is some pre-installed microsoft apps crap and other stuff

Question do people still use such phones? I am a ewaste bin diver from the US that resells phones anything from low end older samsungs to newer iPhones. I am surprised that these older models sell and im glad that people would reuse them. Tho even here in the US some people use older Samsungs. And in the country my parents are from (Romania) it is not uncommon to see people still using the Samsung S7. Which is pretty cool imo the S7 is still very capable.

Yup, although yes they are considered cheap here too, and the average family will either get this used for a youngster, or just have one from back in the day in some drawer, i live in the poorest state of brazil called Alagoas, and in here this phone and phones as such are very common with elderly people and with kids, and theres a huge community of - and im totally making this name up, but not the community - "phone overhaulers" or "phone tuners" (i think it sounds cool), which is just a bunch of ppl that for one reason or another want to pull the most amount of performance and usability out of this phones, either out of necessity or just as a hobbie. You will see people turning MHL capable phones or Dex capable phones into straight up game consoles or desktops, overclocking their chips and putting big heatsinks on them with coolers and a bunch of other stuff. You will see people grabbing cheap/used/given/straight up trash picked parts for everything. I mentioned some big examples and stuff yes, BUT in between less crazy fellas, theres this unwritten rule: rooting your phone and stripping every piece of bloatware from your cheap slow phone to AOSP levels is a rite of passage to become one of us mad scientists LOL Making your device completely devoid of bloatware, sometimes using swap ram(which theres still a debate on and i will not get into), and sometimes even using root apps to, ans i'm nor kidding, lower the system's internal resolution to decrease load on the GPU and increase FPS are all practices that i have seen. That plus all the modded apps, cracks, ane "lite" versions of games who remove assets and do all trickery to make the games/apps lighter, they even mess with stuff such as PSP and PS2 ISOs. Not only Brazil has that of course but its also huge here, i'd say at least all the countries on BRICS have this, russian and chinese mods on stuff like these are also huge. For better or for worse, the average brazillian is slowly starting to catch up over the past years and brand new flagship phones are not a rare sight as they were in 2013, having a galaxy s3 when it was new, was like having a bugatti, it was status, nowadays having an S22 Ultra is like having any nice - but common - new car, idk, a Chevy Cobalt or smth, that means that this community is changing, but even now it still exists, and there is always a poorer class and its there, with a huge dose of young juvenile creativity and craftsmanship that you see things flourish, and then you have stuff like an old trash picked 512mb ram tablet from 2015 and a toy fisher price laptop become a dosbox and retroarch cyberdeck ! (i did this last one, i can even film it and show it to ya). Anyway sorry for the big text, i hope i gave you a very good insight onto how things are overall, i type this with the passion of a phone tuner since the symbian days.

Thank you so much for the insight! Sounds very fascinating what these people do. I've only tried out custom roms on a few of my phones to make them a bit better. I remember a few years back I used this Huawei u8650 with a custom rom to try to load a game like Minecraft cuz Minecraft didnt work and was shocked that it ran so good for such a phone.
