Spite's channel is becoming a great demonstration on why you should not buy a project as your first bike. It's, I wouldn't say fun, but rewarding to get a broken bike working again however this project bike should be the third or fourth bike in your garage.

I bought one no-title bike one time. It was in FL, bought from a guy who bought it from a storage unit auction where it was found in an abandoned unit with 10 year old CA plates on it. Had only ever been registered in CA and not for over 10 years, so they had next to no info on it because it had been so long. Only way I found to eventually get title was to work out a deal with a friendly towing company to "impound it" when I left it on the road 1/4 mile from their shop, and let them get title 30 days later because apparently in FL, tow companies can do that as long as the vehicle is lien free and not stolen. They agreed to sell it to me for their cost plus $100 but it took 60 days. If I hadn't known those guys from delivering pizza to them all the time, I doubt I ever would've gotten that thing sorted out.

Serious take: This was a good "walk through" of buying a questionable used bike off Facebook, Craigslist, etc. and some of the issues you might encounter. Goof take: Spite's secret Honda boy is coming out... now patiently awaiting a 5th gen VFR or Blackbird to enter the stable... for "reasons". Looking forward to seeing this thing run again! Should be a spicy little meatball if you can sort out the gremlins.

After essentially having to rewire a lot of my 1993 Kawasaki KZ 1000P, I'd recommend getting a Clymer/Chilton manual, making a copy of the specific schematic from the book, and having the copy laminated. That way, you can mark with either a dry erase or grease pencil, and if you accidentally run the page over, spill blood or cry on it (don't ask...DON'T JUDGE!!!) you're good to go.

But due to not a lot were for sale back then and was saving up to buy one, I reconsidered what I wanted in a bike and switched over to a naked. Zero regrets. Agile, fun, fast, easy to work on and great riding position for commuting or longer trips even.

It's interesting to see the different procedures for buying a used bike in other countries. I just had a similar experience here in Australia & bought the cheapest Aprilia Shiver in the country with no paperwork, but I made the smart choice to buy a bike that is running & has keys. Here the VIN check & roadworthy inspection is done at the same time by a mechanic garage that's a licensed inspection station, and they're everywhere. Once that's done & I obtained the mandatory insurance it was off to Service NSW, our version of the DMV. 20 minutes later I walked out with a shiny new license plate & registration papers & the bike was 100% legally mine. All up it took around 90 minutes of my time, plus many dollarydoos, to get it done.

I was looking at the fuel pump wiring circuit on my RF900RV, in the manual, out of curiosity while repairing my low fuel light yesterday. Running out of gas sucks. It was a really complicated circuit. Goes through the sidestand safety switch and a bunch of stuff. I think the problem is liable to be electrical, based on the complexity of the system. Also, it is unlikely to be the injectors because it would try to hit a little bit if even one of them were working at 50%. A local kid/TEEN has a 2004 cbr600rr for sale for $1500 that needs new plastics and TLC. Looks like a nice bike that cartwheeled or something at low speed and smashed up everything. IDK if it is a deal. I've been enjoying the riding characteristics of sport bikes. It seems like a more refined motorcycling experience. I think I want my next project to be a Road King though. I'm so glad that electrical problems don't phase me. They are often very cheap fixes and people just throw their hands up and run away screaming. Motorcycles have very simple wiring schematics, don't let it kick your arse Spite.

I had to get a bonded title a few years back in Arkansas. Almost exactly the same process, except they don't care if it's running. Our inspection is handled by State Police; and they really just physically look at the bike for VIN tampering and check it for theft and liens. All-in, I was out about $200 for the whole process, but that was offset by the price. As to being hard to sell, I can understand a buyer not wanting to risk the hassle of the bond being claimed (how do they know if you're telling the truth). They would get the cash value of the bond if the claim is upheld, which is usually more (1.5x in AR) than the bike value, but it would be a pain. However, if you hang onto it for 3 years, the title is cleared, the bond expires, and you can sell it with no caveats.

Where I'm from (Sweden) if you don't have a title/original papers you simply can't ride the bike on the road unless you modify it very much and register it as a homebuilt bike, and still any stolen engine or frame would flag you, also very expensive to register. So here no title means for parts and likely stolen or old and nobody paied yearly registry fee.

The fuel relay also controls the injectors!! If you're jumping your fuel relay you will have the injectors always open. Potentially flooding engine, orrrrr preventing it from starting from incorrect fuel in the cylinders. I just went through this with my 04 gsxr 1000. I was bypassing the relay and flooding the engine. I didnt have the headers on and noticed fuel dripping from the open header ports.

Over the summer I bought a 2006 Honda CBR 600rr. I bought it dirt cheap not knowing if it ran. It also has no title. I got it home, put a new battery in it and it started right up. It runs pretty good actually and sounds absolutely amazing even with the stock exhaust still on it. In fact everything on it is stock so I can tell it has never been messed with and also a bit strange that it still had the stock exhaust on it seeing just about everyone with that bike put an aftermarket on. It has 23,000 miles which isnt bad considering at the rate im going now with my Zx6r, in that amount of years I should have roughly 65,000 which is crazy if you think about it. So in conclusion, this bike definately sat in the previous owners garage for three years I know for sure cause he told me, but I really think this bike sat for another amount of time even before that cause it was in such great shape. At some point ill do a vin check but im a little nervous to be honest.

This process is sooo much easier here in Sweden. Title transfer is done in an official government app and it takes less than 3 minutes. You will need an insurance, but that takes 2 minutes online. Now, I don't know what a bonded title is really, but I'm guessing it has to do with financing and the bank wants a bond or security for the loan/leasing. Here in Sweden you can't sell a vehicle with that bond on it. The bank has to release it first. Other than that, it's a very swift and easy process.

How can you buy a bike without a title? Idk how this works in the USA but where i live a car or bike is registerd to a person, so it's not really possible to not have a 'title' unless the person you are buying from isn't the owner.

  • @spartanx169x

In America, Who's ever name is on the title owns the bike legally. There are ways to get a replacement title depending on the situation. But I would NEVER recommend buying one without a title unless you ca afford to throw that money into the trash and not care. Tow truck operators and storage rental companies will take possession of bikes, but they don't own them. But if held long enough they are considered abandoned and then a title can be obtained. Its PITA and I would avoid such bikes like the plague. The owner could see said bike later claim it was stolen and then you are in a nightmare.

Why was there no title? It may be easy to get one or incredibly hard. You can go to the DMV and get the whole story on the title. They can tell you what you can do or not do to get one. If it is truly a clean bike per the DMV, you obtain a title claiming it was abandoned. You can also apply for a bonded title. Both of these can be done in VA or NC. Not sure what the laws are in TX. IF there is a lien on the title it get A LOT more complicated. Having owned 14 bikes at this point not once have I been asked for a Bill of Sale in NC. IN VA they are all but pointless too. I have a relative that has worked at the DMV for 30+ years.Too many people in NC will buy a bike and get a Bill of Sale thinking they can get it registered and they can't, and then they are screwed.

Despite the (many valid) complaints about big government in Canada, 1 thing I really like is that there are no ownership titles. You register your vehicle with the province and receive an ownership document. When you sell it there is a process that transfers the ownership to the buyer. All master documentaiton is registered with the province. It eliminates a lot of the shady nonsense that can happen when buying.
