    This is a brilliant video! Totally agree with the ridiculous over pricing of current leading golf tech. £400+ for the leading drivers while you test one at £20 gives an indication of just how over priced the golf market is becoming.

Long live the budget clubs for people who dont care about brands, can't afford the big names, and just want some fun on a golf course. I'm brand new to golf. I got a second hand set of Ping i3 irons & wedges from Gumtree for £100, which also came with a TaylorMade Fairway Rescue 3 wood and 4 wood. I then went to Sports Direct and bought this exact driver for the same price, and a £10.99 putter. They'll do me just fine while I'm learning, and once I get a bit better, I might look at a better quality of club. Thanks for the video, enjoyed it.

    I'm just finding this, but I really appreciate this type of video. My current clubs are a Wilson boxed-set, the whole thing totaled roughly $400 which means each individual club would cost about this much (when you factor in the bag & everything that came with it). Its nice to see how a club like this performs with you, and think of where I can go from here. My drive is slightly shorter than you're hitting this on most shots, but I've rung up to the 270-290 carry range a few times. Point is, I'm planning to get fitted this winter, and it gives me some hope for where I can get once I get some proper equipment.

    My first set that I bought was for school. I choose golf as sport in college. It was the less expensive way to learn golf for me and we could borrow golf set but I wanted to have my own. So I bought myself at a garage sales an iron set for 2$ each, a putter for 10$ and I’d go to Walmart and bought my brand new 20$ drivers. That drivers was about the same quality as the Slazenger. And it last me one years or two. But for start, I recommend to buy this or a good second hand golf set. You can have a really good second hand set for about 150$-200$ with the bag, balls and if you are lucky a good pair of shoes. Never go for the brand new set except a Slazenger like at first. Put money in lessons and practice balls.

    My first driver was a very flimsy cheap one (Eagle Golf, if I remember the name correctly). Pete hit it a few times when I first came to Lytham for lessons. He tried to hit it over the fence at LGA (which did not happen). It had a graphite ladies shaft in it. I was so afraid he would break it, but it did survive. It did not go very far (I instantly gained 30 yards of distance when I finally bought my Cobra FlyZ), but it was a good driver to learn with, because the shaft was slightly shorter which gave me good control over the shots.

    Yes Rick!!! Love it. These are the kind of tests that we need more of. Cant believe that last shot, and yeah of course when you pay £400+ for a driver you are just paying for the name, theres no way any component on it is worth £380 more than that driver you tested. "That" shop also do another Slazenger driver for like £60, with a decent Grafflaoy graphite shaft and a Lamkin grip, crazy cheap. Can you go back in and pickup one of the wedges (V500 or something like that), true temper shaft, lamkin grip, £24.99! Please test them!!!! And for the record the most ive spent on a club is £40 2nd hand, just cant justify the cost of top notch gear that doesn't really gain me anything.

    Rick, suggestion for your vlog: How "limited" are "limited flight" range balls? This quesiton affects most golfers. One of the main purposes of a driving range is to determine how far a person hits their various clubs on average so that when they play they have some idea about which club to choose for any given shot. However, most driving ranges (here in the USA, I assume elsewhere as well) use what are called "limited flight" range balls which do not fly as far as "real" golf balls such as the Pro V1s you typically use in your golf club tests. My question is, how much distance do you lose when using a range ball for each of your clubs so we can do the math and calculate the approximate performance of range balls vs. real balls.

  • @jamesharrison5004

    Book a Trackman session to do your yardages. You can't tell where your ball lands out on the range.

  • @e99783

    @e99783

    6 жыл бұрын

    That’s a good suggestion but, renting a trackman every time you change your clubs or your swing or you come back from a break from golf is expensive and inconvenient for most people. The range may not be as accurate as a trackman but how did people determine their yardages before trackman was invented? The range.

  • @jamesharrison5004

    @jamesharrison5004

    Jeez how often were you doing any of that? A Trackman session is only £35. You can always do your yardages on the course.

    I honestly don't understand people like you. What do you have against simply letting the average golfer know the difference between range balls and real balls? Do you have some financial interest in preventing golf consumers from having this information? Perhaps you sell Trackman devices or you work for a company that sells golf balls. I can't imagine any other motive for you arguing this point.

  • @jamesharrison5004

    @jamesharrison5004

    6 жыл бұрын

    All range balls are not the same. Golf is about accuracy and the only way to do it properly is with a decent launch monitor. Ok you could go in a field measure out 250y and mark every 10 yards back towards you, then work through your bag. I'd ranther just pay for a trackman session personally.

    ran doshus. Hi, having come back to golf after a long time away I tried loads of balls. For me feel wise the old balatas closest match today is something like the taylormade project a or the callaway chromesoft. Funnily enough I find these way too soft to play now on the course. If you have never cut the cover off an old wound ball and bounced it around you haven't lived just be prepared to clear up the mess 🤣

    Rick, I think that you should retest the Scavenger after you have used your golf.pro skills and re-shafted it with a shift the more suits your standard, doesn't take to be expensive (I've had some good ones from eBay, Gamola and Hireko etc.)

    Started playing with a Dunlop set Driver, 3w, 5w 3-pw bought for under $200. Used it for 5 years playing on a couple 9 hole evening leagues before finally upgrading. Nothing wrong with getting whatever you can afford to get you out on the course!

    Great Video! There's a population of golfers out there that can't play the high end equipment at the nicest of courses, but have a passion for the game all the same. Go out to your local family run/budget golf course, rent a set and film the experience.

    Love to see this kind of review. I'm a pretty terrible golfer and am on a limited budget, i take great pride in the fact that everything in my bag (including the bag) was bought (S/H) for less than £150! John Letters T9+ Driver & 3W, Wilson Di7 & Irons and a Rife putter.

    I took up golf after a 35 year break earlier this year. I had one of these drivers and used to hit it a fair old way at times. Summer time I swapped my clubs for Ping G425s. Generally, I'm straighter now, but certainly not any longer. Possibly even shorter. But I enjoy playing with the Pings more.

    Great video, would love to see more of these for higher hanicapers or beginners to see what is best for their price range. Sometimes it goes to show it ain't always the equipment to blame. You hit it right yiu can work with anything if you know. I'd like to see you go round with some Dunlop Sport Tour Soft. I use them and feel I get so much more out of them than the more expensive balls (£10 for 24)

    Hi Rick, new to watching your channel, and lately I’ve been on a serious binge catching up on your stuff. I really enjoy your matter of fact approach and interesting topics, but also your appreciation of the entry level end of things, and how it compares to the bleeding edge; but wallet busting top end kit. Maybe it’s all in the craft not the gear...Great stuff, subscribed.💪🏼 🏌🏿‍♂️

    Great vlog. Never seen a “butter fade” before that starts right and goes further right. My first driver was a ladies howson and I wore the grip down to the shaft. Not only embarrassing, the bright blue shaft drew attention from afar. I think I paid fifteen quid.

    My current driver is a Cobra, Amp cell and I got it new 2 years ago for £60 as it was a discontinued model. Still smack it out 250-260 yards and love it. No need to spend the money at my handicap of +20. This works just fine!

    Literally just bought one of these earlier this afternoon, took it down the driving range and really enjoyed it. First time playing with a driver and it was an all round good experience, hit roughly 200yds ish and it felt decent. Did feel a little flimsy to me as well, but it’s 18 quid and does the job perfect for beating up while you learn to drive properly.
