    There’s a difference between surface rust and rot. You don’t seem to have a lot of rot on your car. Keep doing what you’re doing…the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.

    As a car lover and a film maker this hits so well. Great job on the storytelling and cinematography. Just drive it and have fun with it! As someone who is restoring a firebird, any time you can get with the kids are asleep, late at night weekend last, when the wife is out with her friends, when the wife is at the mall, it doesn't matter just spend some time on it. Some days mine is in the garage without being touched for a week or 2. Some weeks I drive it every day, and some weeks it's not running because the steering column is apart on the floor. Just little by little. Having your kids around you while you do it also is amazing for them. Your daughter will FORVER remember being little and watching her dad work on the car and her helping wash it. When she grows up she will tell her friends and husband how she remembers her dad working on an old mustag, and because of that she will probably love mustangs. As someone who watched his dad work on camaros in the garage, I grew up and loved them too. No matter the car its about the love for working with your hands and spending the time making it your own. Rust doesn't matter. Sand it spray it and just have fun with it. It doesn't have to be 100% perfect or brand new. Just love what it is and do what you can. Great video.

    everyone starts somewhere. luckily its a platform with a ton of info and parts. if your goal is to get it running and driving. start with the if it aint broke dont fix it approach until then. then you can focus on other things while being able to drive the car around and enjoy it. having a project is always easier to stay focused on when you can enjoy it and fix it along the way

    Bring back memories. I had a Cobra and my sister had the LX 4cyld. What I don't miss was that fuel switch-button in the spare. I would pulled that motor out and put fresh piston rings, head gaskets and since you are already there I would upgrade the internals stuff. I would focus on the engine and transmission first. If you decide to pull the motor out this is your chance to paint and fix any rust or damage in the engine bay. That way you can have a drivable vehicle and then after focus on brakes, exhaust, suspension chassis, undercarriage. The body/Interior should be the last thing on your list. I did a few vehicles restoration from ground up. From my 1976 Nova SS manual w/454 twin screws blower, To my friend 1929 Essex (rat rod) and his brother 1950s GMC Truck w/LS1 swap and few others. From experence. I have seen so many projects that never get finish and they abandon their builds due to loss interest, money and time. There was a time I abandon one of my project due to my son was born and I was so burnt out and now I focus on my son first. Once he gets' older. I get him a project car that my son and me can work on it together and spend quality time and less time for my son to be in the street with the wrong crowds.

    I've had a few Foxes now, so many things can be done without taking out the motor. Pick something and complete it, doesn't matter if it's big or small, just complete something. If you want a cheap option for gaining some power, find a set of GT40 heads, the explorer 5.0 had them and you can get them dirt cheap, just swap out for newer springs. So much of that rust seems to be pretty surface level and easy to fix, or if you can weld just cut out and replace the floor pans, Jegs and summit both sell them.

    You have one of the MOST iconic 'stangs of 'em all, the FOXBODY!! With that said, if you just want to have the car running, just do the lifters, but while you're digging around in the motor to the lifters, inspect what components, accessories, etc. you may need to replace as well so you don't have to rip it apart again to replace something you could've prevented! I can go on and on about what u can do but it'll be a life story cuz I JUST got my '05 GT back up and running. It is a monster if a car, but I was just happy to get it running and now my driving habits to it have changed to expand the life of it. I look forward to giving future advice if you need it in your future vids. Good luck and the Mustang community will be here for you! 🤝

    I also have a 88gt I’ve just started that rust is nothing to worry about. Just clean it with a wire wheel and apply some por15 it just brushes on. As for the motor just replace the lifters. You might get lucky and that solves your problem. You got a great car to start with it already has a five lug swap and other good stuff.

    I’m on the same boat with my 79 notch, my condition of shell is similar. I think it’s best to do a coyote swap & then fix the interior. You’ll be investing as much into building a 302 just to get bolts on when you can swap to a coyote, the swap will be making the car perform new & make it faster as it is a lighter chassis.

  • @wheeldmedia

    @wheeldmedia

    Yea, coyote swap is the eventual goal, but rebuilding this one with the same parts is considerably less. Now whether it works or not is another question but, I’m down lol

    I think everyone can relate to your story. Cant wait to see more updates. It may be easier to access everything that your trying to fix with the motor out. I would check the motor mounts. If they are blown out, then pulling your motor would give access to replace them and do everything your wanting to do. I have to at least raise my motor because my mounts aren't in good shape. I think it's common now for foxbodys because they are 30+ years old now.

    I cant give you much fox body specific knowledge, however, from what I've learned from some friends with these cars, what you have is a super solid base. the rust isn't super bad and it looks decent as is. However, I can say a few things about projects in general. I bought my first car at 13. It was a 1992 Nissan 240sx. Like the foxbody, it has loads of aftermarket support, but also has high prices attached to those small bits you need. What id recommend is to fix the rust as you have been, finish the valve job, get some wheels and tires, and enjoy the car. then tackle little jobs as they come. First serious projects will always hit you with unexpected issues. Don't be afraid to ask for help. People can be rude at times, but you can find some local guys who will be down to help. Good luck bro! and don't sweat the small stuff, enjoy your car!

    The first and most important thing to do is get it running and driving, you're more apt to work on something if you can drive it and enjoy it. Despite popular belief, swapping it to a carburetor is the best and quickest way to get it running. At the cars current level, not being boosted, a carb is the best way. A carb will exceed the factory EFI performance. The only advantage to EFI is ease of tuning on a laptop, but everything you can do with EFI can be accomplished with a carb. There's 4sec 1/8 mile cars that run carbs.

    Awesome story !! You have one of the fords classic “ built tough” 1st I would definitely make sure safety is in place by checking all areas leafs can get into of course water and bad weather depending where it was kept…. Removing fenders to check pillars etc making sure it’s safe for you and family..the fix will be reputable junkyards like prestige mustangs from Georgia or local find 2 nd change engine and transmission mounds 3rd bottom bars to dress up chassis/seats 4th attention to your engine .. either send videos to reputable companies or can use facebook market place , OfferUp , same prestige mustangs I’m sure they will help , etc… I’m sure I’m missing a lot but last but not least I’ve driven Corvettes , Porsches , BMW 3s , most of all top end cars but not super cars… with my 92 Gt Mustang beat up I’ve gotten screams “ hey bro nice car !! “ by all ages and not even one look with the other cars Trust me you will have fun these cars is an incredible experience to own and drive I’m from south Florida and these cars are legendary here

    Just came across your video. As a foxbodys owner myself and have delt with plenty of there problems over the years. Your on a good track just keep open mined on your build you have a great platform, I've seen and worked with worse. The engine just leave it in if all your doing is lifters. There are some other questions I'd have like was engine ever taken out before? Did previous owner keep up on maintenance. As these cars are known to be beat on they never have a easy life. I'll definitely be watching along for the ride. Good Luck!

    When I got my first Fox body it needed some engine work that I was told was lifters and it ended up being a few other things so hopefully the only problem is the lifters but that engine has hydraulic roller lifters with a roller cam you may want to consider replacing the camshaft with the lifters and also check the valve seals and seats on the heads while you have it torn down that far also depending upon the mileage that is the only engine you may want to consider going ahead and pulling the engine and at least dropping the oil pan off and checking the bearings and the cylinder walls Just For Peace of Mind because if you do all of the top end work and the bottom end has lots of mileage on it and wear and tear then whenever you fire it up you're going to run into even more problems of blow by on worn out rings and loss of power that way those are fairly simple engines and with a good manual and all of the KZread videos that are available I totally believe that you could do anything that has to be done to that engine. It looks like you have a very good starting platform and those floor pans are not that hard to cut out and replace to be able to remove the rust from them. You do a great job on your videos and your voice overs I just found your Channel today and I immediately subscribed because I want to watch your journey and watch you grow as a car Enthusiast and car builder I truly believe that you can do any of it that you put your mind to good luck I will be watching I do not know everything about fox bodies but I know quite a bit and I will be glad to comment on your videos with advice whenever I can keep up the good work

    Your storytelling and cinematography is really good. A couple spots lot a little slow with the same tone and inflection but you're definitely on to something. Keep at it an your channel is going to grow quickly. As for the fox, just follow David Freiburger's advice and "don't get it right, just get it running" That car has sat long enough that you need to drive it again to remember why you loved it in the first place. Then tackle one system/component at a time. Well done on the video.

    I've owned many Fox bodies in my day, always did my own work on them. They are VERY simple engines to work on. IDK mileage of said car, or condition of engine as I've never heard it run, maybe it seemed to run fine, just had some ticking, like I said, IDK. If it is lifters, that is a very simple fix to try and not expensive. I'm sure there are KZread vids on replacing lifters on a Fox that would walk you thru it. I'm assuming still stock heads on it although I did notice aftermarket intake..Holley I'm guessing? Couldn't read it, but from looks of it I thought Systemax intake. If you lived close to WI, I'd help you out, not sure where you're at tho. Good luck! Keep up posted. Enjoyed the vid!

    @@wheeldmedia Yeah, you'll have to see what ya got. Valve covers need to be off anyways to do lifters. Without knowing if stock heads with pedestal mount lifters, or aftermarket with stud mount/adjustable lifters, like shooting in the dark here. You should get valve covers off, takes a few minutes, make a short vid in detail what ya got going on. Get stamped head #s...look of the rocker arms, whatever you can get in detail is a big help.
