I paid £13.50 for this Retro Games Ltd THE C64 MINI from of on off eBay. It was listed as having no power and a broken USB port.
Let's try and fix it!
Hope you enjoy!

If you look for USB-C breakout boards on an auction site I cannot mention because foooook KZread, you should find a few with resistors. These could be used to convert devices like this c64 to USB-C charging.

@Ralph Reilly did you really have years of experience before making and posting your comment? Once upon a time I was also an inexperienced tech, and I repaired issues before finding the cause. One thing I learned above all repair techniques, don't bash on the tech who actually tried, even if they failed.

When removing a port, take the tip off the hot air gun and hold it straight down, don't move it around. Let the port fall off, don't pull it with tweezers.

I used to have a mini megadrive, I swear they were all made as cheap cash grabs, my megadrive circuit board barely anything was soldered on at a sensible angle, so the diode in this being like that doesn't surprise me at all. Great video as always Steve!

Watching your videos has become one of the highlights of my week. Keep up the awesome work!
I had a gameboy/ gameboy color link cable that kept shorting, out of the box one of the ends had pins touching inside! I slid a piece of cardboard into the connector, voila, it worked!
Nice! The more electronic items you fix, the more you'll realise that 90% of all failures are something mechanical unless someone has applied power incorrectly somehow. Broken wires and broken ports/connectors account for an awful lot of failed equipment. Not what you want to hear, but more time doing the initial eyeballing saves a lot of chasing red herrings later. Love your videos. You have come on a ton from the start. Hope the house move went smoothly.
Compliments ! This is the best repair channel...you are my inspiration! I live in Italy and I recently started posting some of my repairs ;). Thank you!!
I'm sorry Stez but watching you struggle is my favourite.... The clarity when you find the problem and then the ease of solution, you can't script better entertainment =) Thank you

Great fix! Loving the music on this one too 🤙
I love my C64 Mini, happy to see you working on one.
Your contents is good as always! Keep up the good work!
I have the full sized version of this unit and I really like it a lot. The USB power socket on mine broke too, it developed a loose connection so if you bumped the socket it would stop working. My sister's boyfriend tried to resolder the connections but because it's surface mount soldered he couldn't fix it. He said the only way to fix it was by drilling a hole in the case and hard soldering a USB cable to the board. I wasn't too keen on that, so in the end I just bought a replacement unit which is working just fine. I'm sorry to say the joysticks aren't made the best either, they don't use good strain relief and so the cables are susceptible to breakage. The build quality could be better, but overall I think Retro Games did a pretty good job with these units.
Welcome back Steve, you were missed.

Man, I remember California Games. I tried so hard to get good at the hacky sack game and never really did. Anyway, great video!
Have one. Love it got it from goodwill auction complete for like $30. It is, however, not playable. It works but I’ve tried and it’s just on display now. I play my other mini systems almost every day.
Brilliantly done thanks Steve

Nice video as always mate.
The most bizarre fault, I had a micro USB socket that was short on a Raspberry Pi 3, took the port off, cleaned the solder off it, examined it under a microscope, no bent pins, solder whiskers, nothing visible, but there was a definite, hard short between 5V and the metal case. Replaced the port, it's still working perfectly to this day.
fantastic diagnosis and repair
These vids are cool mate. Love em
Glad you’re back. Hope the move went without a hitch. But you’re a tease putting adverts at your reveals 😂
Great work. 👏🏻 You should look into getting a PCB bottom heater. It can really help with those USB ports 😊👍🏻
I love it when you say 'stupid game'.
The same happened with an xbox 360 I fixed years ago with the red ring, turns out one of the front USB ports were completely destroyed and the contacts were touching I bent them away from each other and no more red ring
I've seen people complain before that weights are a sign of cheapness. But nobody actually wants a product so light that the weight of an HDMI cable will drag it off the table on to the floor. It shows some thought was actually put into the user experience.

@@chris7868 The Super Retrocade is like that as well regarding the seeking of replacement controllers despite having a USB connector. The U in USB is supposed to stand for universal. Not anymore it doesn't as every company has spoiled it with custom firmware running things to the point that having a universal connector is all it is now, doesn't mean anything is automatically usable anymore just because of the USB standard.
Looks like that original port was practically incinerated! LOL.
Funny seeing a commodore 64 with an HDMI port and USB. My first computer was a commodore 64 and I think I hooked it up to a 13-inch TV. I had hundreds of floppy disks in the few years I had it.
This helped me as I thought my mini was faulty as it auto turns on when power is turned on. I see yours did the same.
Finally my weekly ASMR is back!

Probably an easy fix and possibly something to feature in a Christmas video. Do post PO box details if that's any use. Cheers for the fun videos and music.

Hey! Great video. Was interesting to watch. My C64 mini won't detect the USB joysticks in any of the two ports. Is that a general problem with these minis?
I've been checking multiple times per day for a HHG spot to open up ... how are people getting in on that? Teach me your secrets! Another great video BTW! Thanks!
Great video. Watching your repair while doing the robot from your background music. What are the tracks?
The solder music was excellent! One really has to wonder what people are doing with connector ports to screw them up this much...
Don't be to hard on yourself Steve. I did my trade as an electronic service technician in the 80s but gave up the industry due to the micronisation of components and dealing with absolute morons full of bad manners and entitlement, expecting everything for free. I'm surprised you didn't get a content match/strike for the Gooey Louie song lol - GREAT VIDEO!!!! :D
I'm wondering if I can fit an HDMI audio-splitter inside the casing of the mini. I need to feed audio out separately as my monitor doesn't have speakers. It looks like there probably probably is enough room for a splitter thanks to this video. I can't use the mini on my main TV as the input lag is awful - weird because my X-Box with the same TV is fine, and the mini is fine with my PC monitor...
11:16 damn what is that music? im loving it
