What does a reliable daily driver for under $2000 look like? To be honest, a lot better than I thought! I have some work ahead of me, but this gem is going to clean up well!
I was in need of a new commuter car that would be cheap, reliable, and easy to work on. I happened to find a 1999 Civic Ex (5 Speed Manual) with the D16Y8 Vtec motor tucked away at a honda dealer. I was always a fan of the 99-2000 EM1 Si, and I think I could obtain a similar clean look with very little money. This will be a budget civic build. So I need to start with some detailing to remove the interior dog hair, replace the window tint, and of course repair the body damage. But this video should give you a review of what it looked like before I start ordering parts. Excited for the new civic and fixing up this beater car. I also do a vtec 0-60 pull, which was not fast, but not bad for the cheapest daily driver I could find!
Things to do on the 1999 Civic Ex
- Clean interior carpet and seats
- Polish and restore the paint
- Replace the fender
- Rattle can the new paint
- Find some new wheels

I bought mine for $750 CAD... car is very clean for a Canadian vehicle since it was undercoated almost every year. It’s currently automatic but whenever it blows up, I’ll swap in a manual trans. Great little car !

Got a similar one, but without AC in Europe, non-VTEC 105HP A/T, 155k KM (almost 100k miles). Fuun to drive, fantastic daily driver, nothing ever breaks. Bought for 1000 euros in Jan 2018. Have clocked abt 26000 km with it so far.

Crazy deal! I just found one that's fairly similar. 2000 Honda CIvic EX, 5 spd, 123k miles. Engine isn't as clean but the body is in good condition for $2800.

my first car was a 1996 honda civic dx coop. The engine/trans has 88k miles, but the body has around 280k miles.

My 93 civic extra has a d16z6 bye single over head Cam it's way better then the y8. I had the 2000 extra as well and I like the 93 better

Google is a very odd thing. Some lady ran a light and totaled out my 92 prelude SH. I recently bought a 99 civic ex 5speed. I'm googling things for it and today on youtube this video shows up. Mines white with 180,xxx miles and really the only thing wrong with it is the driver window motor is dying and the ac blows warm. Out the door for 1650.

I think I use to own this car. I live in Twin.. If it is mine, it was stolen when I lived in PHX in 2005. =) I got it back though. Maybe I can dig up some old paperwork..

Lol you do know VTEC has different designs? It's not limited to B/K series. On this motor (D16Y8) the mechanism is only on the intake valves.
