    I often find myself pondering the same question. The only answer I can come up with is that, in some way, I trust him. Like many of us, I have a passion for cars, and, on the flip side, his reviews are concise and have assisted me in identifying and resolving some issues with my vehicles at home.

    It's so hard to have a optimistic outlook on cars priced like this in the US. A car that costs 900 dollars would be damaged or need severe repairs or be 20 years old with 200k miles. Folks of the UK are extremely lucky to have such a huge throw away car culture where cars only a few years old are worth nothing. At least nothing compared to prices charged here in the states. I just pulled up prices for MK 6 golf's here in the US. Didn't look long but they are worth about 8k and up. For similar mileage too.

  • @Afraz_9n3

    @Afraz_9n3

    4 ай бұрын

    @@baronvonjo1929tbf US cars are a lot more well specced in terms of features than our cars. For example the mk6 golf in the US as far as I know all have larger engines, AC as standard, slightly nicer seats, electric windows, alloy wheels etc. and from what I've heard from my American friend German manufacturers are seen as premium there. Meanwhile in the UK you can get a mk6 golf with no front fog lights, steel wheels with hubcap, no AC a 1.2L 3 cylinder with a whopping 90hp, manual windows etc just a really basic model. We have half the stuff on our base models than yours and as a result they cost half the price it makes sense when you think about it

  • @baronvonjo1929

    @baronvonjo1929

    4 ай бұрын

    @@Afraz_9n3 But looking at this model it seems to have just about all of that. Same thing with many cars on the channel. Higher prices for cars in the US is the same for every car and every brand. When he shows a car we have here and describes it they all seem relatively similar. This car in particular seems to be well spec and very similar to what we would have here. Yes German cars are seen as premium. But not VW. I think that's something Europeans might struggle to wrap their head around as it seems it held in very high regards over there. Here VW tried to be more premium in the 2000s but it never worked. They have since lowered quality a lot and still are seen as the same or lower as Toyota and Honda. Even Kia and Hyundai who came to the US after them do significantly better than VW. Plus all German cars depreciate like a rock here because they have very poor reputations for long term reliability. My point is I don't think it's the increase of options or the perception of premium branding that keeps prices high. I think we have higher prices just in general. One thing to note is the used car market in the US is huge. We need are cars for basic survival here. Many jobs will not hire you if you don't have "reliable transportation" checked off. I think because so many people need used cars because they can't afford new cars it keeps prices high. It seems many folks in Europe have other options if they really didn't want cars. Many certainly do. But it's not a requirement for a lot of folks is my perception. Idk. Maybe something entirely different. Apologies for the long comment.

  • @Afraz_9n3

    @Afraz_9n3

    4 ай бұрын

    @@baronvonjo1929 yh no definitely the car market in the US and Europe is far more expensive than the UK. Actually in Europe prices are equivalent to the US for most cars. In the UK we see German cars as normal but also mostly reliable, mainly because we get the smaller more reliable less complicated engines that the US doesn't (although as Matt mentioned in this video sometimes the small engines like this 1.4 tsi are just as bad on reliability 😂). And so they actually command a premium over similar cars but also because they were more expensive when new. For example a 15 year old BMW 3 series is anywhere between 4 - 8k although you can get one with high miles and some issues for 1 - 3k. While a vauxhall insignia (badged as a Buick regal? In the US) is 1 - 3k and tops at 5k The used market in the UK is also pretty big most people drive used cars and also need cars because most places outside London have terrible public transport or just unreliable public transport or it's just more cost efficient to drive. But people here see cars over 100k miles as ready for the scrapyard and will not consider cars they think are "high mileage" or "bad quality". So cars over 100k miles and cars from manufacturers like the french for example are not desirable to a lot of people. This is changing but it's one of the main reasons why our cars are so cheap. Add to that UK cars don't really have a export market and a lot of cars rust or are neglected (not serviced, run on a shoestring type thing) and those are the other reasons why we have some of the cheapest cars in the world I think.

Also the popular chain type places - a lot of their stuff is bought old so they can sell it cheap - hence why people without a window to chuck their pot they haven't got to piss in, can sit nursing pints all afternoon.

    Engine management light and codes are timing chain I did one recently on that exact shape of golf 1.4 with those exact codes and it was an absolute nightmare to do. That golf is not worth not at 128,000 odd miles.cost more than it’s worth to put it right.

    Matt always has a love hate relation ship with VW's which means he like most likes them, Had 2 Golfs Mk7 and Mk8 GTD's over the years both had over 2000K on the clock when returned, both of mine never missed a beat, nothing went wrong. And even after 4 years of a hard life the interior and switch gear looked as good as the day I got it. There excellent cars.

    A result with the CD but apart from that, only a home mechanic will benefit from buying this. Garage labour costs will kill any reason to to sell commercially. As usual good video though.

    Just have to know your market.. there's a pub in a nearby town that offers a Happy Hour (£1.50 a pint, John Smiths or Carling) between 9.30 and 10.30am. Coincidentally it is next to the Jobcentre.

    Hi Matt, You may not see this but I wondered if you could do a video with the valeting company you use and maybe Jimmy the magician on buffing a car. The cars always look immaculate and it would be good to know if you had just bought a car and wanted that sparkle and shine how it was done. Videos are great thanks

    Im currently living in cyprus and you would be shocked at the state of some cars out here. 250,000km 25years old sun damaged but cos its a 4x4 they go for 2/3/4k euro! Should look into selling older cars like that to companies that bring them over here

    I just upgraded my Golf Mk6 2011 to 2020 Golf GTI PP. My MK6 still runs well and just got a timing chain changed just under 100k miles. It's a good car, I personally think better put together than any Mk7 or especially 8...

    What a CD to find, sounds like my kind of CD. Shame you couldn't do the work and turn it into a courtesy car. Maybe worth selling as spares and repairs, something I would have owned till the end of its life, as I couldn't afford to repair it. Great Video and content.

    The rear shocks a common problem? We had a mk7 GTI which needed them replacing at 25k. The mechanic said they'd been changed before! The car did 10 miles a day with one person in it, so not exactly stresed!
