    Yeah, that saying is common elsewhere too. Even in a country that has lower workmanship costs, the parts are still expensive and many of the repairs require programming that can't be done by some bloke with cheap OBDII plug and generic program but OEM program that costs a lot of money for independent workshop.

    Yes agree the whole rush to EV’s is very very bad environmentally and the poorer motorists can’t afford this madness both on practically or financially it’s been totally madness since the late 90’s Labour or Tories both been useless I ran a LPG car for 12 yrs from 2006 until 2018 as I knew the rush to Euro 5 diesel cars 🚙 was ver bad for our lungs 🫁 but government was taxing our Petrol cars more yes thank you Gordon Brown and ComDem party didn’t change anything until 7 yrs later with a blanket car 🚙 tax but now the worry is now the planned introduction of pay as go drive ‘road charging’ for the public highways to pay for the £150+ billions because the new useless UK PM can’t be brother to deal with the energy crisis like France 🇫🇷 which saw a 5% rise in energy prices because their energy company’s are state owned. Energy, Water and Internet ALL should be state owned as these a fundamentals of life and there should NOT be profit in them and environment damaged caused by these companies is resulting in 40c+ topical temperatures, UK flooding and worse the clay soil drying up so now UK building are falling down! It’s madness and sadly we don’t even have our regal Queen 🇬🇧 anymore RIP now the world is gone to pot!

    Sounds like the key to having a fancy car is to have a mechanic that doesn't overcharge you. I had a car in the UK like 6-7 years ago. One day, it's driver side door lock started freely spinning in both directions and not locking/unlocking. After a quick google search, I learned that most likely what has broken is the paddle-looking thing that connects the lock's drum to the lock/unlock mechanism. The local dealer wanted 150£ just for diagnostic to confirm what the issue is... Went to a local independent mechanic, he wanted 120£ to fix it... the part was 3£ on ebay, ended up replacing it myself in 30 mins with the help of a youtube vid. Luckily I needed a car only for 12 months and there were no other issues with it in that time, I do not want to know how much I would have been charged if there was a more serious issue.

    That's a hell of a barge (and at 5.1m long, I can see why it has cameras everywhere), and somebody's going to enjoy that for what is hopefully a good while, and for a very good price. I would've thought that the air con service would've picked up on the leak, but I suppose the UV dye should make it easy enough to figure out where it's leaking from.

    Amazes me how all these cars you buy seem to have tyres from a brand I've never heard off. This is surely somewhere not to skimp. I did once. I got midrange Firestone tyres for an Alfa mito. Completely ruined the handling. Massive understeer in the wet in low speed corners. Literally just wanted to go straight on. Another situation was when vandals at my previous house decided to slash everyone's tyres. My pirellis were damaged but I was able to pump them up and drive to a garage to get new ones. This was simply not possible with my flat mates budget tyres which had zero pressure and wouldn't pump up. This makes me think the chance of a blow out instead of a slow puncture would be higher with these cheap tyres.

Even after that the gearbox is still not right and a diagnostic showed an inlet manifold control valve problem (intermittent) which I have to get sorted before the gearbox people will dive back into the box, fair enough I guess. I put a bloody knife through the drivers seat as well (I know, tell me about it) so I've had to source new seat leather and that is now booked in with the trimmers to get fitted. A lot of my friends think I'm mad spending that kind of money on a 14 year old Jag that isn't even an R but I couldn't replace it for the money I'm spending, this video has brought that home.

    Considering the reliability issues of some BMW models you seem to have done well with this one. A neighbor of mine has a 2009 750li with a N63 hot-v 8 cylinder and he's hoping it won't be a shop loiter but the story on that engine puts the odds against him. His and your's are both stunning. F01 really is timeless design and it looks lot better than the new 7 series.

  • @stevehoot99

    @stevehoot99

    The V8's were infamous for their reliability which is unfortunate as the N63 is great is every other way. Power output, torque, power delivery, noise - all spot on. The straight 6's however were super reliable, ad again were powerful with little turbo lag plus being a straight 6 rather than a V the engine was so, so smooth. I've owned 3 BMW's (120d from new, 430d and a 435d) and just love the smoothness of the engine and the torque from the diesel powered ones. Was due to replace my 435d I had on lease this month, but actually traded it in around Feb time. Really, really wanted to stay with BMW, but I needed/wanted a coupe that had 4 doors and a middle rear seat, no fewer than 6 cylinders / 3 liters and within my budget of about £500 PCM. Sadly the only thing BMW has that ticks the boxes were the 4 series grand coupe. Looked at a newer (circa 2018/2019) 435d, M440d and the M440i. The F generation was the same as I had before, and quite frankly the refreshed interiors were so minimal it felt like I was in exactly the same which was disappointing. The newer G generation was both too expensive but I couldn't get over the exterior looks... Just don't love that front end grill and couldn't get past it. If I truly loved the new exterior I'd consider spending more but I just couldn't justify blowing my budget for a car I didn't like the look of. As a result for the first time ever I moved from BMW to Audi. Ended up with an S5 which ticks all of the boxes. Interior is better than BMW, and whilst I prefer the F generation exterior of the 4 Series the most, the 2018 Audi S5 I brought was a close second, and a lot better than the latest G generation 4 series from BMW. Only gripe is that the BMW did handle and drive better than the Audi has. That aside the interior and exterior are all superior in the Audi vs the newer BMW 4 Series. Sorry BMW, but if you had the 3 Series grill on the G generation 4 Series I would have stayed loyal and spent more money by most likely buying a nearly new G generation M440i Grand Coupe.

    Great vid as always Matt 👌 and I couldn't agree more with you about saving another ageing quality car being way better for the environment than buying a Brand New EV 👍 Fingers crossed Matt your 730D has the M57 3.0d engine (the good one) and not the troublesome N57🤞with its faulty tensioners and stretchy timing chains that eventually snap. My 2009 E70 X5 Xdrive has one of the very last M57 3.0 D so I'm hoping your 58 plate 730d has one of these as well. BTW the E70 X5s also suffer from the same "sticky handle" issues but this can be replaced. Also check the engine coolant temp gets up to its 89 deg C via diagnostics as it's likely the thermostats have failed in wide open position and it'll never get up to its operating temps, meaning it'll constantly run in "Warm Up" mode , overworking the injectors and sooting up the turbo & the DPF, eventually causing serious running issues and potential engine failure. 🙈🤣

    I used to own one and I think you need to have a mindset of being prepared to drive it until something major goes wrong and then to get rid of it rather than repair it (not environmentally friendly, I know). Trust me, it’s cheaper in the long term to just give up on it. The dynamic suspension went on mine and that was £3k! That said, if you are lucky and can get away with a year or so without anything going wrong, then it’s a great experience for the money.

With fuel prices high better value would be a ULEZ compliant petrol car of the same vintage mileage probably 2.5k and you could spend another 2.5 to get it sorted… just my thoughts… but would prefer a petrol s class Mercedes’ just a touch more special in my opinion same sort of money but the suspension ( many are air ) can cost as much as the car to replace…

    Man.....I love your videos but you need to change your BMW specialist. I work in as a garage manager and £200 for a gearbox service means cheap oil and some Vaico filter - that gearbox will not last long under the N57 Nm pressure. Now for your next bill you had the cheapest suspension arms, probably Starline - ball joints will last 10k the most, a service alone for this engine makes half of that bill if you use MANN filters and some proper aproved oil, not Comma or TQX. The glow plugs control unit alone from BMW is around £180 and the aftermarket do not last long.Back Pressure sensor and Boost Pressure sensor around £300 from BMW - again - bimmers dont like aftermarket electrical components, they wont last. Yes the bill would be higher - but as you said - you do not buy a 7 series to do cheap servicing. Peace and Happy Days.

    I'm always amazed at the low cost of servicing, repairs and refurbs Matt achieves. I guess you can't pay for premium parts selling secondhand cars at this price point. I do my own servicing and buy everything through the business and the parts cost is still higher than what's being done here. (Original ZF8 oil & filter is already 200 quid or more in parts alone)

    Brilliant video. Very interesting. I see you didn't use the main dealer. If they are as rubbish as the ones near me I can't fault you. The best advice when you buy a BMW is get to know your local specialist well. I have a 2019 530d and it is a brilliant motor

    Had a E65 2008 730d sport, black with grey wheels. Great cars and I'd have another. Build quality inside is in a different league. Not a single squeak or scratchy material. And look better (facelift) than an F01.
