A friend recently bought an A4 estate with the 3.0 TDi and she was amazed at how fast it is. The phrase "like a freight train" definitely came up, they are deceptively potent engines. The thing that really shows how highly spec'd that A6 is that it has pretty much everything you expect in a brand new car. Maybe not quite as nice, especially the screen, but the kit is all there.

Chris I 100% agree. After a messy divorce back in the year 2000 I came from driving a brand new £25,000 Alfa 156 to a £350 Audi 100 I got from a friend. The feeling of freedom from depreciation, damage, expensive services and monthly payments was exhilarating. In saying that I’m back in brand new executives but the 2 years I had that Audi was brilliant and I sold it for £350 so it cost me nothing.

Concerned about depreciation on his 2 year old BMW 520d touring my brother sold it and bought an ‘08 A6 for a few thousand pounds. The Audi was a nice car , 12 years old with 120k plus on the clock and ran well doing 80 miles a day for a couple of years. It occasionally came up with some random warnings about the centre brake light not working but once you’d learned to ignore those it was a great car!

I was born in 1953 and fast forward to 1993 and 40 years of age, I guarantee that every A6 equivalent 20 year old car from the early 1970s would be crusty with rot everywhere and residing in the boneyard where we would kick holes in them for laughs. A goldmine of electrical and mechanical parts though. Today the yards are full of cars with perfect bodies that are uneconomical to repair because of electrical faults. What a turnaround!

Swirl flaps are a non-issue on these ... you can simply disconnect the swirl flap motors and use VCDS to map out the "self check" that gets performed at startup - if the arms are worn even a tiny bit, they will throw a code the 2nd time the swirl flap doesn't fully open when starting the engine. I had mine done 2 years ago and the car remapped at the same time - zero issues since.

In 2006 I had the saloon version as a company car - the 3 litre quattro. It went like stink but smoked a little even back then. I found it nippy but the power band was quite narrow - unless that was a diesel thing. In it's day it was quite something, as was a large powerful diesel engine. Diesel still had a bad reputation though more and more people were starting to realise they could be nippy. It was weird listening to you start yours up. It sounded exactly the same as mine did almost 2 decades ago. Brought back memories.

Great videos Matt. I have a late 61 plate version with the 3.0tdi engine. The later ones were 240bhp with around 500nm I believe. You can get 50mpg on the right roads. In regards to the engine light, it is fairly common. My OBD reader says it's the EGR which sometimes sticks if you drive it too conservatively. So a good push every now and again will clear it out. You did well to get your gearbox serviced at that price, I paid around £400 all in. Think they take 9 litres of oil. Stupidly Audi claim they are sealed for life.Very nice cars for the money. Although I think I paid a bit too much for mine two years ago...11k and it had 86k on the clock.(Covid prices)

Audi A6 C6 models with 3.0 engines always had a 6 speed ZF torque converter transmissions, not the CVT multitronic ones :) Also torque wise, 2004 -2006 C6 models of A6 3.0 had 450nm of torque and 221bhp. Its direct competitors of this era E60 and W211 had 500nm of torque with similar bhp. This would be more in comparison to a W211 280 CDI. I owned a 55 plate S-Line 3.0tdi Avant for a few years. Absolutely love it, bought it back in 2019 with 145,000 miles and it’s now on 180,000 and the only faults have been a dodgy rear centre brake light and the fact that occasionally the engine light will come on for an hour or so and then go off again. Not too worried though as you said. Mine also does smoke a bit when you put your foot down. I believe the Quattro models have the tiptronic gearbox rather than the multitronic and it’s apparently a much stronger box, deffo can be a bit clunky at times though. I wouldn't worry too much my 2001 2.5TDi quattro puffed a little bit of smoke which I had from new (as a personal import.. remember those days) when booted but then again it was still on the same clutch at 260000 miles in 2008 before I sold it to a czech guy who hammered it up and down Autobahns. A great car which I really miss.

My uncle had the same car he bought it brand new from Doğuş Automotive in Turkey it was a 3.0 TDI Sedan with all the options he used it as his company car but after some time he retired the car he drove the car until a year ago it had over 400.000 kms and he was servicing it every 10.000kms the car didn't have a problem it had small problems like electronics failing and a DSG gearbox failure (it was a gearbox brain failure so a small issue) so overall it's a great car if you maintain it

My dad had one of these but the sedan version, and I remember it as a beast of a car. The Quattro was superb, and the power was unbelievable, really. But he once fueled from a dodgy gas station, and after 1500km, he got a christmas tree dash, and the mecanic said it needed 6 new injectors and a new timing chain. He sold it then.

Can you pass MOT in the UK with check engine light on? In some US states you can’t, and that is most likely the reason our beloved XC 90 will be decommissioned at the time of the next state inspection. We have a check engine light that doesn’t affect performance at all, but we can’t get rid of it. Not without spending $1200.

Used to have a 2007 Avant 3.0 TDI quattro for 6 years. Really liked that car and it never left me stranded (apart from the battery dying from no driving in the winter a few times). It was in beautiful spec too, originating from Italy: Daytona Grey Pearl with base exterior but S-line interior, suspension and brakes. I had to address several visual issues which can also be seen on yours, mainly the side sills starting to rust from the stone chips coming from the front wheels and the plastic rear lights on the boot lid becoming sun damaged (you really should have fixed those as well since you were already doing the front lights!). Also seems that the rear window washer motor breaks on pretty much all the Avants.

I recently purchased a 2006 Audi Q7 with the 3.0 TDI. It has 255,000 Kilometer and the interior shows it. many bits and pieces missing despite this one being top of the line with 2 tone, panoramic sunroof. Everything works. with that being said, i bought it cheap and it comes with 1 previous owner and all of it service records. it drives awesome. however, it does have the airbag light, TPMS light on, and it states that there are light bulbs out despite them all lighting up as they should. Also, the MMI system is stuck on radio mode. I think think that is where i should start. The timing belt has been serviced at the correct intervals. What's your opinion

Have a 2010 audi a6 c6 avant I use as a cruiser to the south of Italy, a 1750 mile trip. For a yearly 14 year old car it gets 48 mpg fully laden, is more comfortable to sit in than all the other 3 to 4 year old cars I’ve done the trip in and it just eats up the miles. The only thing I dislike is that the standard xenon headlights are naff having experienced LED headlights in newer cars. You can in this sense feel the car has dated technology. Otherwise for it is ideal for these kind of trips.

wish i could find one for a grand or under two grand.. Looking for a decent estate for a couple of years for running the dogs about! I'd try changing the boost pressure sensor for the EML. My 320d E46 had a similar issue last year; light on and off... reader said glow plugs, MAF, incorrect map.. MAF and glow plugs had been changed a few years earlier so didn't think it was them but that's what the code reader said.. MAF, glow plugs, glow plug controller and even inlet manifold gasket... stil the same, then somebody suggested the boost pressure sensor - £45 later and it was fixed.

I got a 57 plate A6 Saloon Le-Mans spec'd 3.0 TDI, and that thing pulls so effortlessly. Although it's now sidelined as I needed a car for getting in and out of London's money making scheme (ULEZ) I want to get it fixed up and put back on the road as the MOT has now expired, I got to fix the adaptive cornering unit and high beam on one headlight thanks to biodegradable wiring inside the unit, replace an engine mount which has failed, clean a clogged EGR cooler and service the gearbox. I wish I could keep using it on a daily basis, because it has given me countless hours of driving pleasure, and have managed ridiculous mileage out of a tank of V-Power.

I owned the same car but 2008…had the swirl flap issue and paid £1400 to have it fixed, this was a few years ago. But one of the few cars I regret changing. The 3.0d with Quattro was great just so much torque, it just kept pulling and was economical too. Stage one remap made it a very fast car for the size. I remember driving it in some heavy snow and most cars couldn’t get up a small hill near where I live this just went up without any issues the Quattro system is excellent.
