Can you please make a video with a voiceover explaining exactly what happened here? Feels like there’s a great story to be told but from the clips posted all over social media we’re only getting bits and pieces. - How long were you living there before making the discovery? - What made you knock that hole under the stairs, did you suspect you’d find something? - Was it obvious from the outside that there was a whole other part of the property that was hidden away? What is the layout? Was the door with a concrete wall behind it originally an entrance? - Have you been able to find out anything about the history of the place, and why all this space was hidden away in the first place? - Were the plumbing and electrics already there (suggesting it was being used relatively recently)? - What is the legal situation? If all this extra space isn’t in the deeds can you claim it, or does someone else own it? - What are your plans if you can claim the space, will you incorporate it into your home or create a self-contained flat and rent it out?

If the flat is part of a larger house then it could have been the servants quarters at some point and just not used when people moved away from servitude, or sometimes certain parts of houses didn't council match building regulations at the time (safety) so they pretty much boarded up rooms and left them.

I think that's the cellar. Our house was built pre 1890 and the cellar runs under the whole living room and hallway. The door to it is in the kitchen and the stairs go under our stair case. There's a second door in the cellar leading to the larger room. In the smaller part there is a Victorian thrawl / cold slab for keeping food cool. In the larger part there is opening to the pavement, partially closed now, presumably for coal deliveries. Lucky as it looks very dry. Our cellar is a bit damp. Seing off cellars was a fairly common thing I think at one point. Some places where the cellar is sealed off without ventilation has caused mould and damp problems. Our cellar originally had a door that went to the neighbour's cellar. We presume that was done during the second world war in case lf bombing so there was more than one escape route for families if a house was hit.

That makes sense. If the building was originally a single dwelling before being broken up into flats, access to other parts of the building may have been boarded up for that reason. If the cellar was sealed up long ago, it might have been ignored when the building was converted into flats. If the flats are leasehold, which I think is usually the case, there must be a freeholder as well who owns any residual parts of the building (if they are not communally owned) and collects ground rent and any other charges.

If you were in the US, I'd think your room had something to do with the Underground Railroad, which was a pathway of helpers and hiding places enslaved people in the southern part of the country used in the first half of the 1800's to escape to Canada. However, I suspect that some previous owner just walled the stairs off thinking that nobody would ever care about an old basement.

I do not like finding doors behind drywall in an old house. The last time this happened to me I was offered money for the rights to the screenplay and the script. There's still a reward for the whereabouts of a newspaper reporter, an uber driver and a very old book with Latin writing.

First time I heard of an old place having hidden secrets. Usually the old ones have all that worked out. It is the new developments which have those secrets which contractors either refuse to come and fix or leaving you forced to flip your house so someone else can deal with all the things the builders buried and concealed behind the walls. I honestly would prefer buying an old place for that reason.

If the flat is part of a larger house then it could have been the servants quarters at some point and just not used when people moved away from servitude, or sometimes certain parts of houses didn't council match building regulations at the time (safety) so they pretty much boarded up rooms and left them.

A house was taxed on square footage at one point in time but unsure where that was applied at outside the US. Or they have been finding houses with hidden places accessible to the hidden rooms for the Underground Railroad dating back before the Civil War
So intrigued by this one. Keep the videos coming 👍
I want to see it fully renovated!! ❤
Totally going to follow you to see what you do with that space now! That's so interesting!
It's making me think of the upstairs downstairs, this is what the cook and the servants would have lived or worked out of this area,
Somebody was definitely hiding something, that room must have had some gruesome history.
@mattaukamp

Lol "gruesome history" like mold, or an unused room adding to the square footage was increasing property taxes. Or it needed so much work (look at it!) that a property manager sealed it up so it wouldn't turn off potential buyers. Stuff like this is usually incredibly mundane.

Beginning a 250 yr old house, was probably a Grand Lady at one time..Fascinates me..Basement with huge fireplace, probably a Summer Kitchen or only kitchen in that era...Just ❤❤❤ older houses...Fun, Mysterious, Some down right creepy...
remodel downstairs now too. sweet room.
I want to see more. I subscribed. Please update with renovations on your flat. Thanks!
That is crazy! And a huge bonus. Now you have much more bang for your buck and a spare room. Good on you.
Wow it’s awesome I love it use love to stay updated how lucky u are I think it’s awesome

I saw this on Tiktok, thank you for uploading the full footage, I was just curious does this all belong to you now? If so, although hidden and if that was all to be done up that would be so much SQ FT for your money. :)

Wow! You can buy a flat without the original. Blueprints? Not in the US. Need engineering to go over etc before buying. I bet they used it during the blitz in WW2! I would renovate!

I live in California and there are no blueprints for my home. I tried to obtain them but they don’t exist. House built in 2005. So you don’t need blueprints after the home us finished and approved.

It's just a normal basement. And from the looks of it, it has small windows on the road. They may have used it during the blitz in WWII but it would have been of little use if the house was struck by a bomb.

Oh boy! This is how 90% of horror movies start! Gud luck mate!
I would keep it secret .
Mate if you renovate that you’ve just added huge value onto that!
If you can relocate the bathroom you may access that large cellar room or else an alternative new stairs down to full height room can you get a light tube to it if not a window.
When I was 10 I dug up a old unused grease trap and I thought that was the coolest thing, never mind a whole unused room. 😀🇦🇺

have you checked housing plans on what you own? I beleive you bought the first level not the whole building? what if underneath isn't yours either? I mean I'm hoping it is
@faithlesshound5621

Have you found out any history of the house in the area that's what I would like to know. Looks great hope you have fun renovating.
Cool find! Definitely has potential.
I bet it has more secrets..
Question- when you buy a ‘flat’ are you buying just 1 floor? Or buying the whole building? A flat is not a term used in USA.

When they say "big as your flat" they could be referring to the apartment she's living in during renovations on the house.
Crazy. A perfect fire trap lol! When you buy a very old building you are buying a lot more than meets the eye apparently.
I’m curious when it got walked up. If it really has a door to the street you could always renovate and rent out the space. Of course, I’m sure it would cost a small fortune but still, could be good. Betting it’s going to be awesome when you guys are done with your work.
First impression, call a priest lmao

Looks like it was an old 'Downstairs' for the house staff
We just LOVE to find MORE than what we paid for - especially if we can do it up and use it. I was suspicious about the perfectly pink painted ceiling, like it was recent. Even the black plastic in there was pretty 'clean' looking, not dusty. Like someone was using it until recently... Wonder what the back story was/is...
The fire rated plasterboard ceiling looks suspicious.
so much extra storage space!
What are the plans now? To fully renovate the rooms down there? With better ventilation?
They should try to get their hands on the original floor plans!
The secret room was a kitchen many many many years ago
Thats the perfect start of a horror movie 😮
When you finally open that secret section in a video game you feel glorious... Now the value of that flat just increased.
Talking about multiplying square feet/meters for the same price! Hopefully you get it renovated with windows/natural light.
At this point once you've done all the clearing and cleaning up you should bring back the surveyors to re evaluate the property.
Had a very similar experience in a flat I rented in Liverpool, I'd been in there for 4 years before I discovered a staircase leading down to a cellar the whole size of the building,an entire and complete living space below street level. I built a workshop down there
Reminds me how haunted/possession was like at the 1st place. Its an old flat and the room was hidden so that no one knows the existence.
Your flat is now a house ❤
Weird place with so much covered up and yet you gain so much more room. Do you possibly have original building plans from the home when built?
That’s a brave man to blindly go into the darkness of a hidden room like that!😳
Is nobody questioning WHY this space was all shut off and closed up???
That’s the coolest find ever!!!!😅
Halloween would be fun at your house! 😂
Thought it's another conjuring 😅 , turned out to be an amazing room underneath
I've had dreams like this.
I can imagine some very sinister things have went on down there
What are you going to do with the extra space? How cool!
Wow what a find.
It would make a good storm shelter. Or a dry goods celler
A cellar good find that will up the value of your property
I can smell the 250 years of mildew and decaying concrete through my screen.
That's an awesome room for gamers and crafters to share. Do any of your neighbours have the same?
Two for the price of one, nice deal.
I’m subscribing to see the progress
Woooow that’s cool
By chance, is it a HAMAS tunnel or even a command centre. If so, give the IDF a call they can use the footage in a communication
Maybe your house was part of the Underground Railroad. I don’t know where you are so I don’t know if that’s possible.
Careful about knocking. Something might knock back🫣
Seems like one of those houses they hid people in from the wars kinda of thing, depending on where this is
Unreal! Just doubled ya square meterage
Game and home theatre room.❤
I call that B.S. the deeds to your property will show you what's what before you even buy the place. If those extra spaces aren't on the deeds - those extra spaces aren't yours.
Not clickbait but truly interesting.
At that point do you have a flat or a whole house?? Honestly congrats tho, I can't wait to see what you turn it into! I'm sure the other flat owners will be jealous, I know I would be 😁
That " fireplace was likely the coal or oil burner/boiler for steam heating and theres likely a chute door leading to the street above.
I Came her direkt from instagram
It will be cooler in the summertime down there
So, is that secret room part of what you own, or part of the structure owned by someone else? Do you own the entire building? Pretty exciting though!
What was the place used for before?
Is that cardboard wall covering the door. I dont think they used that in the back in the day😮
