I Bought A 20 Year Old Thrift Shop Espresso Machine

Welcome back, everyone! Hope you had an absolutely lovely winter break and I'm glad to get back into the swing of things with a little fixer-upper project.
Hopefully this helps give you the confidence to explore your local thrift store next time you find yourself in need of coffee gear, you never know what you'll find. I'm looking forward to finding this machine a new loving home now that it's back in (mostly) better shape!

Oh I still remember the time I first saw KitchenAid mixers and other stuff on the store shelf. Even 20 years ago they were the coolest and unlike any home appliance or almost any consumer device at all. I suspect they were designed before you joined KitchenAid though. That espresso machine looks dope as well. Actually a bit over designed to my taste, but still cool and functional. What year was it introduced? I thought it was some time in 2010s.

This is our second K-Classic. We had our first one for many years, so when we had to replace it, we wanted nothing else but this exact kzread.infoUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf model. We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.

If you are concerned using strong (and poisonous) solvents on a piece of food preparation equipment, a bit of cooking oil and some elbow grease can remove tape residue. Then a little bit of dish soap to remove the oil residue. Takes a little more work than the strong solvents, but it is a totally non toxic method. After discovering this, this is how I take tape and sticker residue off all my food and drink implements, and save the goo-gone for other applications.

They use gaggia classic boilers and can be retrofitted with steamwands from the rancillio syliva V3 (modification is required). you can also fit the rancillio resettable 165°c thermostat to the steam boiler and get really crazy powerful steam! It's fiddly to get the tops of them but once you do they are so easy to strip and maintain there's no downside!. Also being gaggia internals parts are easy to find!.

Important thing I learned: Cleaning ammonia turns coffee oil into water soluble soap, then evaporates leaving just soapy water behind. It's really nice, because saponified oils can't resettle the way they can with solvent or soap cleaners. It's like using oven cleaner (caustic soda) but without the danger of leaving poison on the surface.

I've done a few coffee machine restorations for friends who've got them from garage sales and the like. Firstly let me say I do enjoy your content and while I'm not entirely sure you meant this as a tutorial but rather a project idea I think there are a few steps you should mention. Firstly I've never come across a machine older than 2 years that did not require a group gasket replacement and these can be tricky to find for lesser known old machines. Secondly while a backflush clean was definitely needed in this case I would strongly encourage always doing 1 or 2 full descale cycles in addition to a backflush either after, before or on either side of to ensure the boilers are only working as hard as they need to and are not dropping large chunks of calcite off. Finally whenever starting a machine that may not have been run in a long time it's good practice to start with the valves open to allow water to flow into the boilers as they can easily burn out if an air bubble forms. I did enjoy this video though and as others have said would love to see some other restorations.

I have no idea how i've stumbled on this channel. I don't like coffee. I'm 100% a tea person. But the fact is that this is like the 3rd consecutive video I've watched now and you're just so entertaining and charming, so I don't really care that I don't like coffee, I like this channel :)

Brave drinking the first shot from the machine after a deep clean with Purocaff! I usually pull a sink shot to really make sure there's no detergent residue (it even recommends you do this on the bottle of cleaning powder :P) Also, Goo Gone is your best friend for getting sticky glue residue off any non-porous surface :)

That KitchenAid is basically a Gaggia. Very sturdy technology. These do have the habit of leaking from one of the boilers I think, which sort of isn't good for the inside

Oooh, a Kitchen Aid, the internals are pretty much Gaggia Classic, which makes spares super easy to find.

I have one of these I've thrifted about a year ago. you can put a rancilio Silva steam wand on it, and the rest of the unit is actually just re-branded gaggia classic internals. so any/all aftermarket parts for a gaggia classic will work on it (mine also has an adjustable OPV). I upgraded the shower screen and put in a stainless steel shower holder, tossed the rancilio steamer on it and put in a bottomless portafilter. honestly works and runs great to the point where now i seem to make better espresso than most coffee shops, steam from this machine is fantastic for making latte art/cappuchino's it falls short when steaming for multiple people because the boilers are small, but cant complain at all for home use at the price i paid.

That slide was worthy of a replay or two. LOL. Man, it makes you feel old when you see young Morgan getting excited over ancient coffee stuff. Like the Kar-n-Home when it seems l like it wasn't that long ago my parents had one. I would make a Geritol joke, but then I would have to explain what Geritol was/is and the old ads. A member of our amateur radio club enjoys refurbing and using vintage radio equipment. I could see some radio operator sitting in his shack using vintage radio equipment while sipping espresso from a vintage espresso machine on his bench. Me? I got so tired watching Morgan clean this thing up I almost switched to instant coffee.

The old-skool espresso machines are basically just steam engines with different outputs. The technology has been used for centuries now, so it’s pretty well understood. Back in the 90’s when I worked for Starbucks I got a refurbished Saeco machine, and it lasted more than a decade of daily use. Eventually I out it in the curb once the gaskets started leaking. I saw that same machine in a tent at Occupy Vancouver in 2011: the paint had a distinctive chip on one corner. I love that it was still bringing people joy and espresso almost twenty years on. I hope it’s still out there doing that.

This machine is actually great! It has same boiler as Gaggia classics and the second integrated boiler for steaming from gaggia es well, has adjustable Overpressure valve so you can set it at 9 bars! Also I would suggest next time to purge the water through the machine first and not get it up to the working temperature with who knows what is the water inside the actual boiler haha Other then that it’s a great machine !

And you are very articulate which is a nice change if compare with many American KZreadrs.Enjoyed watching the video. Hi, Morgan! Happy Holidays. I suppose 99% of all espresso machines ever made (not including manual lever ones) have one on-off button, one pump button, one hot water/steam button and a valve for steam. It would be great to see what you do with it once you've dialed in some good beans! BTW... I loved the "tape show" and all the elbow grease you put in making this video.

I use a la pavoni lever machine from 1990 as my daily machine. I've bought multiple other machines throughout its life, but they always break in complicated ways. The la pavoni has had a couple of component failures but they are trivial to swap out. Still makes amazing coffee.
