The sane thing to do is rebuild the transmission while I have it apart. With that being said, a part of me wants to just change the broken sunshell and re-assemble with the original parts if all looks well. Not to save money, but just to see how much farther the 220k trans can go🤔 #morecontent

LsxMatt just changed out my tranny because I had the same issue, the reactive shell at the back of the Tranny busted and had bits of metal all in the pan and at the back of the tranny bought a rebuild kit and had someone put it in for me and haven’t had a problem ever since. Them 4Le60 are just something else man one thing after another. Note this was my second time doing this.

Gotta assume it was due for a rebuild anyway. Especially if it falls apart after such a casual/common mistake.

Bummer Matt. My work truck is a 2001 Tahoe 4x4 with 252000 on it. I pull a double axle trailer daily for work. 4500# with tools loaded. I bought the truck with 160000 on it. Original tranny. I’ve changed fluid/filter three times in my ownership. Admittedly, I am gentle during acceleration. However the Tahoe is rusting so two days ago I bought a 2003 z71, silver 4x4 to replace it. It’s really nice ...147000 miles... and I’m going to make it really really nice doing stuff like you have done. Glad you made it home without tow service. Hang in there. Love your videos. Hey Matt, make sure and investigate the PWM converter lockup system in the 4l60. The valve bore wears causing converter clutch chatter and eventual grenading of the unit. re-builders seem to be oblivious to this problem . there is a reamer and upsized valve available . you open up the bore in the valve body and put the bigger valve in.

Yep, that is a major problem with the 4L60E trans. My reverse went out, have all foward gears. Here in Alabama it is going to cost around $1800 to have it rebuilt. One outta a junk yard starts around $700. So you have to figure out if it is worth fixing.

My 08 Tahoe is starting to shift funny and felt like it slipped a little bit a couple of times. I looking to preemptively strike and replace mine before it goes and leaves me stranded. I was going to have it rebuild, but the only guy I trust in Orlando, and that built mine for years retired and sold his shop, and they longer rebuild, on replace with jasper. To the tune of $3300. Ya, fuck that! I have looked at every popular trans builder. I learned to stay the fuck away from monster based on their history with the BBB! I have settled on Gear Star. For like $2600, you get a nice upgraded trans with a decent converter, and the core charge is only $250.... I would recommend them to you!

Not going to lie, when I shift in reverse, it takes like 1 and a half second to drop into gear. I have to be patient. I have the 4l60e. I might have to swap it too. Sometimes it does drop into reverse..like I have to shift into park then back to reverse so it’ll drop into gear. It’s gm quality. It makes sense if it’s got many miles. :)

That sucks. The old days of shifting from drive to reverse to drive again or "rocking" the car/truck back and forth to get unstuck are over with these new computer controlled transmissions. My wife got our 2014 Impala stuck in about 8-9" of snow at the bottom of our driveway during a blizzard last year. I do try to keep the driveway and sidewalks clear - but not in the middle of a blizzard. I went out to try to unstick the car the old fashioned way by rocking it back and forth. Needless to say, it didn't work. I'm sure I could have gotten the car unstuck if it had the old TH350 or TH400 in it but ended up digging and digging and digging...heavy, wet snow. Ugh. We just bought a 2015 4X4 Silverado. We won't be off roading much here in Wyoming, it's not why we got the truck, but we're less likely to get stuck in the driveway when the snow gets more than 6" deep. (Pretty frequent in Wyoming)

The good part is the transmissions cost so little these days its cheaper to swap it than fix it same with all engines for gmc, silverado, yukon, are all the same if its 99 to 2006 Ive seen people pay like 200 dollars for used transmission that works same with engines. The one in my truck has over 219k miles still works just fine once it breaks down I'm upgrading to a LS3 engine no point in fixing it unless its to learn to repair them.

Not to mention the gearing in the 80 blows. Its intolerable to the point you have to dump more money and time in to change the gearing. Been there, done that, never again. You can easily (and for less time/headache) build a 60 to handle anything you'd ever throw at it stock or with bolt ons, even if you haul a lot. You can build one to take as much or more than an 80 as well. Plenty of guys running 600+ horse LSA setups in their silverado/sierra/tahoe/yukon with built 4l60e and no issues. They just suck stock.

Just doing a good 60e build is fine for that... it lasted 220K and if its still bombing around past 400K well then its done really well as a truck overall lol. The 80e is such a turd compared to a 60e especially with the weight of the Tahoe and a stock 5.3 in front of it. The parasitic loss and lack of first gear reduction isn't that huge of a deal in a reg cab short box or a Camaro... but in that truck you would hate it. The 4L80e has its place... and its not in a totally stock daily 5.3 powered Tahoe.
