end of year post. This was a longer video which is all thanks to Matt! You can tell he worked on the video because the animation was good lol. I'm working on building a team to be able to make more videos and Matt has been a huge help in that effort. I'm still learning how to build a team at all so there may be some growing pains but it's exciting that it's happening.
Anyway this video is about an experience I had last summer. My friend invited me to go farm sit and that was a great and rare opportunity just plopped on my lap so I decided I really wanted to go. And so I did! There was a lot of new experiences gained from the trip, and in this video was the most notable ones. Italy is a beautiful place with really tasty food. I am certainly going back some day. Either as a farmer or a tourist who knows.
I hope you enjoyed this video. More to come.

Foxes feel more comfortable around known situations; areas they are familiar with, routines they've seen before. Having a strange person immediately run out of the house when they got nearby, approach them (as close as feasible anyway), and flail around like a crazy person, probably did actually help dissuade the fox from coming back, at least for a while. So well done! :)

The primal urge to protect you livestock is real tho. One day I went out to my chicken coop and noticed they were all outside acting distressed. As soon as I opened the door there was a dead one right there, which I wasn't too surprised as we had lost several in the past few weeks. I realized based on the behavior of the others that whatever did it was still inside the coop, so I shut the door, and then shut the little chicken sized door too so it couldn't leave. Thinking it was a raccoon or a coyote or something, I went and grabbed my pellet gun. I've never killed anything bigger than a rat but I was ready to fight this thing to the death whatever it was. I came back and opened the door and a frickin' falcon flew over my head and escaped. I know it's illegal to kill them here, but in the heat of the moment I still took a pot shot as it flew away (I missed lol). Even though I love birds of prey, and I know you're not supposed to kill them, if I had known what it was before it got away I absolutely would have gone in with a mask and a pitchfork and shut the door behind me. Don't mess with my chimkins.
@YourWaywardDestiny

One time I was trying to shut my chickens in for the night (they get to free range during the summer since I'm outside all day long and they just follow me about anyway) and a skunk came out from their coop. I was 500% _ready_ to fist fight a skunk at that moment. Lucky for me, it seemed to have used up all his stinky mana, and was not ready to tussle. He booked it. Two days later my partner shot it when it tried its luck again, but still. I was going to fight a skunk barehanded to keep my birds from harm. That's probably the most stupid thing I've ever done, and I didn't even think twice about it at the time. It was simply time for protec.

I was actually also in rural Italy this summer, crazy that I could’ve seen him. The nonna offering you food is so common where we lived, and we were by beautiful mountains too, so this is really bringing me back to the great time I had there. also I was obsessed with the American-style pizza. I had never had fries on pizza before but damn it was good. So good we got it on two separate nights when we couldn’t decide what to eat haha
"Do owls even eat chickens?" Oh, you sweet summer child... If an owl finds something it can carry off, it will. Owls are only bound by physical limitations, not by apatite.
@ladams391
Жыл бұрын
This, exactly this. Owls will carry off and devour anything that has a pulse, isn't glued to the ground, and can physically be lifted. We've recently had a plague of owls on my farm, like three new owls have moved in because we had an extremely dry summer followed by an extremely cold fall and winter so far, and they're hungry. We've lost all but one chicken, every single turkey, and three guinea fowl.

@@ladams391 My neighbor had four barn cats, and three in door/out door cats last year. He no longer has any barn cats, just one in door cat cat he won't let out of his sight for more than a couple minutes at a time. One big, hungry owl was the only thing that took them out. Not even eagles were willing to go for it for years upon years... They're efficient, quiet, and bold. Claws and talons won't save an animal if they can carry it.

Rural Italy is as beautiful as it is kind. You may find some oddballs here and there, usually grandpas stuck in the past, but at heart, we always help eachother. man, the scene at 2:21 is even funnier seen as an italian, because basically "to slap someone" is translated as "dare una pizza" (lit. to give a pizza) which is somewhat of a slang term but still very widespread. you did an unintentional underlying joke, hats off

When I worked at a retirement home, there was an Italian lady named Anna. Now most people found her to be grumpy and hard to please. But I was patient, and took my time to remember what she liked and how she liked it (I was a food server, and this was during Covid when we had to bring the food to the individual rooms). I also learned a couple Italian words for food and drinks from her (I'd previously began the Italian course on Duolingo because in March of 2020 (this was now March to July of 2021) I had a trip to Italy planned (worst place to be during the pandemic at that time, the whole country got locked down while I was there)). Anyway, so one day, Anna is trying aggressively to get me to understand something. All she wanted was to give me a fig! She was so sweet, really, just misunderstood because she could really only speak Italian, and was clearly just lonely. I hope she's still alive and well. Edit: I never ate the fig, I struggle to try new foods sometimes, and from Fig Newton's, I knew I likely wasn't going to like it, plus I know about fig wasps... So yeah. When I did finally psych myself up enough to eat it, it was already beginning to rot. I felt bad, but it was still really sweet of her, like she clearly liked me 😊

About the fig wasps: if they stopped you from eating the fig, then chances are you don't actually know what fig wasps are after all. Misinformation about fig wasps is rampant. Look up "Adam Ragusea Fig Wasps" for a good video about the topic.

6:18 I HAVE FELT THIS EXACT FEELING. a couple months ago i went out to close up the chicken coop just past dusk. as i exited the front door, the chickens all started raising absolute hell and there was some loud thunking coming from the coop. a raccoon had gotten in and was DRAGGING one of the hens out. i sprinted out there and started SCREAMING at it, and it actually dropped the hen- it'd only had her by the tail, so she got out just fine with only some missing tail feathers. I spent time on a farm when I was in my 20s, and I can in fact confirm that "RARBABLARBABLABABLABABLABAR" is a valid fox removal technique. He now knows that area is under guard of some new, terrifying creature the likes of which Foxdom has never seen. You are now an urban legend among the foxes... the farm where they would always be able to sneak in for a quick chicken snack can now summon an otherworldly being and is officially off-limits.

I started laughing hysterically at the "it's the fox." Moment, because even though I haven't been in that exact situation, I have a cat that has had a very upset stomach before. As some of you may know, the sound of your cat about to vomit in the middle of the night will unlock ultra-instinct within you for about 5 minutes. When you said there was the fence and you couldn't get to him and went "RABABLABLALBLA!" I laughed harder, and it sent me into a coughing fit. 😂
