I ate for $1 a day for an entire week. Now why would I ever do this?
The Stoics practiced voluntary discomfort/hardship as a way of building resilience, which is the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change.
I thought this would be an interesting way to see how I would react when I remove one of my favorite things in life.

I think it was kind of silly not to let yourself use salt and pepper. People who live on a dollar a day do use spices in their food, they just use pantry staples and don't have to buy new spices every week, which is why it's something they can use. In India, I was told that poor people tend to have spicier food because you feel more full on less if the food is spicy.

I get what you're all saying, but people are not just born into this world with a basic array of spices in hand. They need to be factored into budget at some point, and having $1 a day makes them quite an investment (and an unworthy sacrifice for just one week of eating this way imo).

If you work long hours than the money you make by working an extra hour and buying lunch/breakfast from somewhere more than offsets the cost of spending the extra 10-15$ ever day on eating out for most people in the states. The question should always be, what can I gain from substituting the cost with my own time? I can give you several advices when eating the way you did. Going shopping on local markets here in México and buying what you did its a great idea. Tianguis and mercados here got the best prices for daily products, it can be useful for you to carry you own tuppers, there are some places where they disccount the price of the plastic bags or cups from the total price you pay. When doing oat meal, it will give you way more free time if you just presoak 1 or 1 and a half cup before going to sleep and putting it inside the fridge for the night. When you wake up you can eat it plain; you'll avoid the usage of the stove, the time of cooking, the time of washing cooking items and the risk of burning. When cooking beans, you can go to the cereal locals where you bought the oat meal and buy the plain grain. We have a vast array of bean species you can try on and each one of it have different flavors, so you will never get bored of them, I recommend you bayo beans and black beans to begin with. Cheap and delicious, you can just boil them (maybe 2 hours), we call the beans with that kind of cooking process "Frijoles de la olla" (pot beans). If you make a mixture of chopped potatoes, frijoles de la olla and tortillas..... BOOM, you got an amazing dish. You can also try lentils, I only know 2 of them, you can buy them also where you bought the oat meal and the frijoles, high protein resources and cheap. You Cook them the same way you cooked the beans but they last around 40 minutes or 1 hour cooking. Those 2 cereals have High protein levels, you can combine them with potatoes or camote dulce and it will give you energy for hours. Of course dont forget the tortilla and if you use the pesos you save with the tuppers you can buy chiles and give super plus to your meal. Roast them in a comal, some salt and you got a delicious dinning companion. These are just a few examples of how you can improve cheap meals and expand your horizons with the cooking resources. Nice video!! I HOPE you are having an enjoyable stay here in México. Greetings from Guadalajara!!! Best wishes.

I am spanish by the way, just so you can compare. I think it also really depends on how you can use your money, it isn't the same to buy most ingredients on the first day (when you can probably buy in bulk) than having to spend just 1$ on each day... anyways, great food for thought!

Lechiffresix six one of my best friends is a traveling nurse and I also know a doctor who lived in Africa for a while. Both continuously treated children for malnutrition because they so heavily relied on cassava meals. If you look up the nutritional content of cassava, it does not provide much, just fuel from the starch. Beans on the other hand, do have many nutrients. It's not a criticism of culture, it's studying and understanding the nutritional content of foods. Substituting cassava/tapioca flour for beans is NOT a good idea (nutrition wise). Here's a study from an African scholar speaking about exactly what I mentioned: "Nutritional implications of projects giving high priority to the production of staples of low nutritive quality: The Case for Cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) in the Humid Tropics of West Africa" pdfs.semanticscholar.org/57ea/3dc620630c6f0eafebc7df73fbdfe002dba9.pdf

@@Zuvas I can get canned beans for like 2/3 that price in Australia. But there's also lentils, chick peas or other legumes. You can also buy them dried. White potatoes are a bit nutrient empty. Sweet potatoes are more nutrient dense but not quite as dirt-cheap. But then again saying less cheap than white potatoes isn't worrying. Some other nutrient-dense foods with surprising amounts of protein are the leafy greens, especially the darker greens, like kale, spinach or broccoli. You can buy broccoli frozen and I think that's cheaper.

I wonder how much it would cost if you bought a bag of uncooked beans? That's how I save a lot of money I'll buy a 25lb bag for about $30 and that lasts me almost a year (I eat beans every day). Obviously that would not fit into the $7 a week challenge but it would definitely help in the long term.

I've seen a lot of videos like this, and most of the time they're really insensitive to people who actually have to live like this. But this was really refreshing. You're open minded, and real. You're not pretending to tie a bigger meaning to it, just diving into another lifestyle outside of your own, whilst raising awareness for a charity that needs it. Thanks for being you, Nathaniel.

This is a great Video! Some People already stated that if you would have bought stuff raw (beans) it would have saved you a lot. And also buying flour instead of the tortillas would also have given you a lot more options. It looks as if it was a culinary knowledge problem more than anything else. As this is already an older Video and i don’t know if you already made another one like this, if not, why not make one but this time with better planning. I would love to watch it. Generally speaking i really like your videos and think that you are an awsome person.
