I Asked AI To Teach Me How To Sharpen A Chisel

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I asked AI to write a script for a video on sharpening a chisel. It provided me with the script and camera shots. Here is what it produced.

I had a friend at the gamestore we both worked at, we got new computers, of course his name was Dave so I set all the sounds to play quotes from the movie... he came up to me and asked me if the computers knew my name. I acted like he was on something and asked what he meant and he went on to tell me that the computers greet him, ask him what he's doing, and when it's time to turn them off, they tell him to stop.... this went on for about a month and everyone would get a riot when the computers called his name

I'm guessing it got it pretty close to correct at least in part because he prompted it to do it in the style of WoodByWright, so there's lots of accurate content for it to base the script on.

It's because it returned the same basic information that you can find on hundreds of websites and blogs. Think of these things like a "word calculator"; it's scanning through words one at a time and finding the next most associated word. The model doesn't actually know what a chisel is.

Seems to me that what you got there was akin to a power point presentation and a not very good one. When presentation software first became popular, I remember learning to put high level concepts on the slides, to minimize the number of words, and not to just read the slides, though many people did, and still do, read their slides. AI gave you bad slides to read. Some more work needs to be done, though it was cool that you got camera angles, etc. Thanks for doing this.

I don’t know that I would say it was unsuccessful. The reality is there are thousands of videos and blog posts and magazine articles talking about how to sharpen a chisel, thanks to the abundance of woodworking content creators, and they all say roughly the same thing. It’s telling that the AI script was probably 99% accurate (or maybe we should just say “not inaccurate”) - that’s the homogenous voice of the woodworking internet masses coming through.

James, the other day I watched a guy building a water stone grinder... He used what seemed to be a normal grinder stone, but he used a DC motor to turn it slowly... Made the water bowl... thingy... I don't know... But it looked to work well, to tell you the truth! I don't have a lathe to make the gears like he did, but there are pretty cheap DC motors with gearboxes... So, I don't know, but perhaps I end up trying it! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

@@WoodByWrightHowTo Figured as much, the rest was already sharp i guess ;) I bought a good grinder (Hanning and balanced the stones) so I can also sharpen chisels, planes and twist drill bits with it. I like sharpening, but when doing chisels, it just takes too long to get them to 25 degrees by hand. Flattening and the secondary bevel go on diamond and compound strop. I can peel rice with them. Your video's help me honing my skills. Thank you.
