I knew I was hitting on a sensitive subject regarding tuners and additives. I'm not disagreeing that some tuners will likely do what they claim, which is generally designed to do a few of the following; improve horsepower, torque, and fuel economy. My challenge with Tuning is that even if they do improve some areas, they may cause issues with another component that is designed for the factory tune and build spec. What if you increase your torque significantly at low RPMs because of a tune and then snap your driveshaft U-Joint simply because it wasn't designed for that type of torque load to be applied? I simply wanted my viewers to hear from the manufacturer's Engineers who designed, built, and tuned the engine at the factory. There are hundreds of KZread videos, thousands of Forums, and Chat groups that show the Tuner's perspective and give their message. I feel it's also important to hear from the manufacture of the engine WHY they believe these are not needed and potentially dangerous to the product, especially from a Warranty perspective. This video is so you have all perspectives.

The problem is that once out of warranty, when the emissions junk starts to go bad, you can delete cheaper than fixing all the many emissions parts. And a good clean delete tune does not make smoke, also Once deleted you will find 1/3 better fuel mileage, and no more DEF bottles/boxes to throw away....Not to mention engine longevity....Seems like if the EPA really wants to “protect the environment” they would maybe want to use less fuel and make less trash waste, and make trucks last longer.... o but people make less money when that happens...😣

I’ve had my 2011 6.7 deleted for 225,000 miles, not a single issue. Swore I wouldn’t delete this one, but when an exhaust temp sensor left my family stranded on the side of the road in Yuma when it was 126 degrees outside, I bought my exhaust and tuner that day. Too many sensors on these trucks, some are necessary, many are not.

If you're tuning because of deletes is one thing. Tuning to increase power is where it gets dangerous if you get greedy.

  • @krice24

The reasons why people delete their trucks are mostly due to emission failures/reliability issues. When the trucks go out of warranty around 100-150k, maybe more depending on the trucks environment, the particulate filter (dpf) gets worn/sooted up to the point where it will not clean on its regen cycle good enough making the truck stuck in its regen cycle. This cause poor mpg, harm to the engine due to back pressure issues, as Well as reliability issues, etc. So deleting it cost roughly 2k versus spending 5k plus on fixing the dpf, def, or sensors. Other issues and the main reason why I deleted my lml duramax is becuase of the def. If you don't drive your truck enough to cycle a decent amount of exhaust fluid through (regardless of the trucks miles) the sensors will go bad making the truck go into limp mode. I have had it happen it three times on a trip. This is the concerning part becuase I didnt know if/when it was going to malfunction again. As Well as when I purchased the truck it had to go back to the dealer for sensor issues. Deleting it puts the reliablilty back into the truck. That way you do not have to deal with the emissions leaving you stranded. Even when your truck is still under warranty I recommend buying a programmer even if your leaving it stock for warranty reasons. (Do not tune) just use the programmer for forced regen if needed or so you can reset the computer system of it gets stuck in limp mode. If you can wait till your warranty expires delete it. As far as deleting most people do it for the reliability.

I wonder when a genius engineer will figure how to get a diesel to meet emissions at the combustion chamber, rather than dealing with everything afterwards. They are using combusted gases diluting your air/fuel mixture to bring down temperatures, therefore NOX. Then all the mess in the exhaust. DPF filters, that require regen, and urea injection. The day engineers can clean up the whole process will be the next big leap in diesel engine technology.

  • @mechanicsteve2320
    @mechanicsteve23204 жыл бұрын

Emissions is the main sticking point I think. You can buy high quality tuners that increase your torque and HP numbers along with improving fuel mileage that does not hurt the durabillity of your engine. The big thing is that by doing so most of the time they will not pass emissions. Most people I have talked to just put the factory tune back in when they have to get their trucks inspected in States that do that.

  • @AndreenMotorsports

The problem with every new diesel (Chevy, Ford, Ram) isn't the engines themselves, its all the crap bolted to them. The emissions crap is what makes them unreliable and expensive to fix, it also robs a lot of available extra power. People still search out the 5.9 Cummins and 7.3 Powerstroke trucks because they make plenty of power and will reliably run half a million miles with only basic maintenance. The new stuff won't do that.

  • @poweredbyfaith
    @poweredbyfaith4 жыл бұрын

Interesting. The 6.0 and the 6.4 problems were fixed by the aftermarket. My 7.3 powerstroke is built and tuned with 300k miles and still runs better than it ever did stock.

What he didn't answer, "What are his thoughts on an outside of warranty stock tune only for the purpose of a delete in a non-regulated emissions state?" This eliminates expensive emissions components while increasing fuel economy and keeping the engine at the stock hp and torque for longevity. Not everyone lives in Cali.

There are many available tuners now that are "CARB" certified now aftermarket for the diesel world have came leaps and bounds over the past few years. Furthermore when it comes to the 6.0 and 6.4 powerstrokes aftermarket mods and tuning greatly increases the longevity, fuel economy, and power of those engines. The 6.7 powerstroke is a great engine and Ford has done an awesome job with improving it over the years since its introduction. However to think that the aftermarket performance world can't improve it more is just wrong. You need to go see Mr. Gale Banks and have a conversation with him about emissions on CARB complaint tuning for modern diesel trucks.

I agree with what you are saying here. There are some engines that can benefit from a tune to fix issues that have been discovered after the fact. However, many of the 6.0 and 6.4L tunes required many many more modifications to resolve the issues. Simply doing a tune would not fix the EGR or Head stud issues. A tune as a way to build power for racing or to overcome CELs when removing equipment and sensors is a bit of a different topic than what I was touching on in the video.

I put well over 200k miles on each of my previous dodge trucks with cummins engines. I purchased both new and both remained stock, no problems with either and I towed a lot. I now have a 2017 Ram HO6.7 with aisin trans, will remain 100% stock. Yet a friend purchased a 2500 4x4 because he liked mine so much, he had a 6-pack tuner installed. I told him I thought it was a bad idea but he always kept it turned up some, around 70k miles the trans had to be replaced then around 90k miles the engine destroyed itself. So he ended up owning on a truck and having to take a second mortgage on his house to install a new $11k engine. Another friends nephew just went through that with a 2017 F350 that he has a tune on, the engine went to pieces at 33K miles and Ford told him he was own his own, no warranty. He just paid a little over $12k for a new engine. Ford, Ram and Chevy heavy duty trucks have more than enough HP and torque. Not only are guys voiding their warranty, they may run into problems on resale and/or trade in. If I were shopping for used diesel trucks, I would walk away from any truck with a tune or aftermarket exhaust. What makes things worse, too many backyard want-to-be mechanics are ripping the emission components out of very expensive trucks.

One issue with today's low sulfur diesel fuels is lubricity....or lack of it.. I have recently decided to use Arch Oil's fuel additive to increase the lubricity and add piece of mind. Also here in the Northeast....some fuel companies blend their diesel with a small percent of biodiesel.. and they do not have to disclose it....so when you are fueling up you have no idea if the the fuel is blended and if it is to what %. It can be a nightmare in winter months. Had a truck freeze up last winter as a result of this even using antigel additive. Just my 2 cents.

best of all three options (Stock/Deleted/Tuned+Delete) is a carb certified tune, then delete without tuning for more power. Tune to remove the CEL for no DEF, but don't add tons of power because you'll already be waking up the beast with a delete. Plus you're eliminating a failure point w/the EGR cooler and DPF removal. Both of those will get clogged and cost $$$$$$ to replace (unnecessary)

I would be interested to know what his opinion would be if he was no longer working for Ford. I wonder what a mechanic would say about this after this trucks get done with their warranty and have to have work done Not from a for dealer. Because let's be honest the only reason most people take their truck to the dealer is because they are under warranty. It would be cool to get the opinion from a mechanic that has no ties with a Ford company. Good info tho. Keep up the good work.

The way I’ve always seen it is that the manufacturers tune these trucks so that you can safely put your foot to the floor for a long period of time while pulling a heavy trailer and not get to hot or throw a rod or anything. The aftermarket tuners tune the trucks to get some more power or to get some better shift points or better towing tunes or whatever but the user has to be able to adapt how they drive or change the tune for what they are using the truck for that day. Ford doesn’t want the driver to have that responsibility and they want one tune on the truck that will do everything just fine without hurting anything

You must also remember that the engine is only one part of the entire package.

I don't agree. Most generational engine changes come with far more than simply a "software unlock of extra power". For instance, the 2020 changed to steel piston rods, an enlarged and significantly improved fuel system, 10-spd transmission, and several other big modifications. These were done to give the truck 50 extra hp and 125 extra lb ft of torque. Some tuner manufacturers claim their software improves the performance of a 2017 6.7L beyond those, with just a software update.

Nice video, good information. On the 2020 vehicles both the new 6.7 and 7.3 can you ask about the derate on the engines for the cab chassis models? Is this a software change, or actual internals of the engines themselves? If software can it be changed by the dealer? My interest is towards an F450 for a flatbed with a truck camper, not much if any light duty towing. Since it is not for a commercial or heavy towing application I would like to have the full rated engine if possible in a cab chassis. When can we expect an updated video for 2020 on F350 vs F450, pu bed vs cab chassis comparisons? Keep up the good work.

I have a 2021 6.7 powerstroke with 15k miles and I live in northern Vermont. I have never liked the tune. Under slight to moderate acceleration I get massive preignition (bottles rattling) sound. I know this is really bad for rod bearings. It was annoying knowing I was damaging my engine and all while not abusing it. My dealer shrugged it off that it’s normal. I did research and found that Hot Shots everyday treatment with winter anti gel additive was good for all aspects of the engines. I bought a bottle and hesitantly put it in my tank. After about 20-30 miles I noticed a huge decrease in the preignition noise. The engine was way more quiet. This told me my rod bearings were finally getting a break. I’m. It interested in adding .5 miles per gallon or adding HP. I just want it to last. With this noticing improvement in preignition a noise, how can anyone argue that this additive is good for my engine? What is your take on these results.

And been working at a caterpillar dealership for 30 years. I have fixed many fuel systems issues just using stanadyne lubricity additive. Lubricity is extremely important in a fuel pump that builds over 30000 psi. Sure you’ll be ok for a while but when that pump fails you are looking at a lot of money. You’ll be better served using a additive and changing fuel filter every other oil change! Ps look up Bosch Chevy fuel pump lawsuit.

One of your best videos. Everything he said is true. But people need to understand that if you tune your truck be prepared to pay for repairs out of your pocket. They need to understand how to use the tuner. Don’t tow on the highest setting. They are nice for fuel economy but to get better fuel economy you have to keep your foot out of it. I use a mid range tune for every day driving and tow in stock setting or 1 above stock and I have had no problems. Pay the money for a good tuner. You get what you pay for. If your rolling coal it’s not a good tune

I liked the video, but I have a 2008 6.4 ford diesel and I didn’t start using fuel additive until about 60,000 miles and my fuel mileage improved from anywhere between two to three miles a gallon, depending on what kind of driving I’m doing. I’m about to turn over a 100,000 miles and I sure wish I’d started using the fuel additive much sooner. I’m speaking from experience, and my truck is running great.

Most fleet companies don’t use additives because they really don’t care. Plus they really don’t want to spend the extra money. New trucks and maintenance are write offs for a lot of large fleet customers. They don’t go looking for trouble but it’s not the end of the world if something breaks down.

I'm all for people doing what they want with their own truck, but at what point is enough power, enough? The truck puts down over 1000 lb ft of torque, which is truly astounding. Most times it isn't physically possible to put all that power to use before you lose traction, so I'm not sure why someone would want to add more, void their warranty (assuming they're still within warranty period), and potentially have an extremely expensive ($10k - $20k) repair bill? When the diesel engines made 350 ft lb, 400 ft lb, 500 ft lb, I understood tinkering and getting some more oomph out of them. Now, it seems more headache than anything.

Gary Stark everybody wants more power it is in the men’s DNA. Guys like to lose traction and roast tires. Just look at all the video views on rolling coal. For me stock power is more then I need I just do not want the DEF problem and being stuck doing 5 mph during a hurricane evacuation.

I have never had a diesel. Just seeing how much power these engines make (all those numbers is all I have to go by), why would I want to "tune" it? 1050 pound feet of torque sounds insane to me. It sounds like you will rip your tires off with that much power. I am very impressed that Ford engineers are able to do this, and somehow get the power put down, without ripping off the rear tires. I do understand the frustration though for diesel owners with all of the EPA crap. But still, even with all of the obnoxious government overreach, the fact that these engines make so much power still boggles my mind.

On one hand I can certainly understand why you published this video. The fuel additive part especially was worthwhile. As for tunes as I watched I kept thinking to myself what did you expect him to say? Of course the Ford engineer is going to tell you not to alter your engine or that doing so risks voiding your warranty.

Of course a manufacturer representative is going to tell you not to tune it. They freak out and void warranties when you have different tires on the truck then what came with it from the factory.

It's still good to hear all sides. The Tuner market invest a lot of time and money in making videos on their products, so I think it is a good idea to hear the Manufacturer's side, which is rarely captured until you need warranty work performed.

Early reports have the 7.3l getting worse mpg then the 6.2l which is disappointing. The 7.3l was not introduced for the pickup market. It's entire point was to support the commercial market by replacing the V10 (which hasn't been offered in pickups but in commercial market). A side effect of marketing was to bring it into the pickup side to bridge the gap between what they offer, but Ford was not actively seeking this option.

Well, lets see, He works for Ford, He works in California! Those 2 things in itself tells you why he's saying what he does. But Yes, keeping up on your Oil changes, Fuel filters and running good diesel will keep it running well. I deleted my 2008 6.4 because the exhaust issues I was having with all the BS emission stuff was going to cost me around $3K and the delete with EGR delete cost me 1100. and had it tuned for towing (Transmission shift points), I got more power, 4 to 5 mpg more, shifted much better. Now I 2013 6.7 Dually because we're full-time RVers and needed something a little more stable and load capable and I'm going to look at deleting it do to even more BS emission stuff and cost to replace it when it starts to act up. again not so much for power but for transmission shift points. And the kit is only 1500 with EGR block plates. But that's my opinion!!

I strongly believe the manufacturers are not holding anything back when it comes to delivering the best power, but they still need to answer to the EPA (or pay the price). That being said, I am seeing a need for a 28th Amendment to our constitution - the right to chip our trucks and bikes!

This may be true for the newest trucks but I have a 2010 powerstroke that has been modified out of necessity. The stock emissions on the 6.4 powerstroke is absolutely detrimental to the longevity of that motor. I have also gained 5 mpg and put out a minimal amount of soot. All of the work I have done is on the second motor so I won't take chances with the stock emissions on that particular motor.

I agree that today's new diesels do not need a aftermarket tuner, but Gale Banks claims he has as a EPA legal tuner, I have older diesel truck (7.3L) and Ford is IMHO using that reputation to market the new GAS 7.3, also for me using a fuel additive is a must, I use Opti-lube and my truck runs quieter because of it, I would use their product in my new 6.7L just to help keep the expensive fuel system well lubricated which is what I've heard and read about with the HPFP eating themselves which in turns destroys the entire fuel system. Great video JD

I have a few questions for these ford engineers. Why isn’t the dpf designed like the commercial trucks instead of a one piece inclosed unit? Why not have the ability to monitor the fuel pressure before and after the fuel filter instead of guessing when a good time is to change it. How about more information on the instrument cluster to monitor soot regen cycles. All I get is a 2 sec pop up, that I miss most times, saying exhaust cleaning other then that I have no idea what is going on under there.. Other than pulling my camper on 6or7 camping trips a year I commute 7 miles to work and 5 miles to walmart with warm up idle time.

Great video! You can make dozens of modifications to these trucks. Ford can only warrantee their engineering and design. This is how you must look at it unless you can afford the cost of a voided warranty. Maybe some folks can afford that? Doesn’t make since based on how awesome these trucks run right out of the factory! 👍🏼🇺🇸

Banks Derringer tuning is EPA certified, and there are other companies writing compliant performance/ economy tunes that are also EPA certified that is a little more in depth than the banks derringer, if you want to add some power to your DPF equipped 6.7 the derringer is a damn good option and most of you will never own your trucks long enough to know the possible difference in longevity from tuning. The people writing the tunes in the aftermarket aren’t numb skulls trying to blow your truck up, most of them anyways, duramaxtuner.com or otherwise known as calibrated power is one of the best examples of tuners who truly know their stuff and are writing safe, viable programs for your vehicle.

Depends on what additives they are. Remember, Ford (or GM/RAM) can make an additive to meet their specific tolerances and specs for the truck, since they built it. A proprietary additive from Ford might be an entirely different formula than what you buy at the store.

Go ahead and tune the 7.3 psd to the hp/tq the 6.7 psd makes. (Need parts) You’ll crack pistons and rings quickly. IE: material and engineering are everything The early diesel’s last forever with maintenance because they don’t make the power and heat. Or require intense fuel precision. But you all know this stuff..
