Yay! As an anesthesiologists I can say with complete objectivity that you are making the right decision! Anesthesiology is a very unique specialty. You have the very cerebral aspect, as you had aluded to. Additionally, it has the 'work with my hands', very primordial side too. I love anesthesia because it's ONE PATIENT AT A TIME. Prior to anesthesia, I worked as an internist for a few years. I struggled with juggling dozens of patients at a time. I realized that I'm not a good multi-tasker. Anesthesia's main appeal to me is that I'm responsible for one patient at a time. During the 1, 2, 3 or whatever number hour surgery I'm tasked to do, the patient before me is my one and only patient. I'm free of distractions. That's what I love. Good choice, young doctor!

I'm so glad for you! When I looked at the anesthesiologist's report on my portal after surgery almost a year ago, I found it impressively eye-opening because she used a number of different drugs at different times during the procedure: in other words, ot was a demonstration of great knowledge, skill, and time-sensitive, even possibly to the point of life-saving, judgment. You're right, anesthesiologists are a taken-for-granted hidden entity pretty much until we see something like my report. BUT, they are a CRITICAL part of the surgical team. Plus, how could you not work with kids when you have so much sensitivity towards them and their parents, as proven by the scrub cap and little stuffed animal hanging around your neck :-) I believe the Lord has guided your decision and will place you according to His plan. You've placed the outcome in His hands, another good, wise, and most appropriate choice. God bless you always.❤️🙏

Quick question! Did you complete a fellowship in Cardiothoracic? My husband is just PGY2, but he's seriously contemplating the idea of pursuing a fellowship. He's torn between Cardiothoracic and Critical Care, unable to decide which one he might prefer. How do you feel about your job?

I did both cardiac and critical care fellowships- at many of the programs you can apply to be be accepted into both fellowships and them do them in whatever order (I did my cardiac fellowship first then did critical care second). I was at stanford which is a wonderful program but there are a lot of other programs that are great as well.

Andy…Good job, well thought out, and a long future of very lucky kids and their parents having you caring for them. I was reminded of a UCSF anesthesiologist friend 30+ years ago telling me that he was able to control the pain of patients by committing himself to use all of his skills while there were others in his specialty who did not choose to do so. Third year veterinary anesthesiologist here! Absolutely the best specialty. I pride myself as being the calm in the room, to putting out fires, and setting up very sick patients for success. You will love it!

I had a feeling you'd choose Peds anesthesia - Congrats!! I've been watching this channel as a pre med in undergrad and it helped me find interest in a specialty I previously had no knowledge of (Pathology) that I could see myself doing one day. Funny this is the one I hoped for which you would apply. Now, whatever subspecialty for which you apply is yours; but as a severe and chronic pain patient I've found some doctors in this field, and bizarrely along with neurology and psychiatry, (trying to rule out functional conditions), I have been treated incredibly well by anaesthetists before/after surgery and when I needed, desperately, for severe pain crises on the wards God bless you for all you have done for the patient and medical community. May He Guide your hands and Plant your steps Much love from Sweden ❤

One point I just have to make - the term “physician anesthesiologist” is redundant and originated from a group of crnas who, for whatever reason, like to refer to themselves as anesthesiologists (no shade). Anesthesiologists are inherently physicians!

I've been following you for a while, we are the same age, I did my dissertation in paediatric anaesthesia at University of Catania and I too recently chose to specialise in anaesthesia in Florence (which in Italy is called Anaesthesia and Resuscitation, Intensive and Pain Therapy). My husband is PGY 2 in Anesthesiology! He's really enjoying the experience! While there can be some challenging interactions with certain surgeons (some could be creating some toxic enviroment lol), overall, I believe it's a rewarding specialty. 😉
