I Am The Wheelman | A Driver (1999) Retrospective

Ойындар

#Driver is an important game from my childhood. Despite playing the game for dozens of hours, I've never managed to beat the first level. Join me as I revisit and finally beat one of my first PC games, and in the process, discover a fantastic game that has aged like a fine wine.
Driver: You Are the Wheelman launched a series that would cement itself in gaming culture in the early 2000s, but the series has since been almost forgotten. While this game is nowhere near as obscure as the topics of my previous #retro #retrospective review videos, it's one that is important to me.
Oh, and it's actually good. Really good. Go play it.

@@Krossfyre yeah, I actually think that I didn’t beat it the weekend we had printed it from blockbuster, that it wasn’t until I got it later for my birthday, that I finally was able to retry the final mission like over 100 or more times, and was finally able to beat the game? I just remember how awesome of a game driver was when it first came out and nothing else had been like it?! The music for the setting and the way the cars handled and everything was all very fitting, I was disappointed to discover once I did beat it, that that mission was the last… it made sense I guess, because it was way harder than all the other missions combined-

I was a kid that actually loved the replay editor. I played enough to try and keep body damage to a minimum for a perfect replay on many missions. This is the game series (as well as Stuntman), that got me really into driving games. I loved 60's-80's era of vehicle chases too, loose suspensions and heavy rear ends sliding around corners, and of course seeing those hubcaps flying off and rolling down the streets too. As far as games that were hard and never completed from back then, Aero Fighters Assault for the N64. Far from a driving game, of course. But thinking about Driver brought back some more memories from deep storage. I could never get past the first level (I think) with a submersible aircraft carrier.

I beat this game when I rented it from Blockbuster one weekend as a 14-year-old kid!! But I also grew up on a junkyard, and have been driving since I was three .. With that said, the game was still hard, AF !!!!! Especially the last mission where you were being chased by undercover, corrupt government agents- you had to make it all the way across across the city from one side of the map to the entire other side, the longest mission in the game, and it was sprinkling rain, and these undercover agents were coming from everywhere, not to mention, their cars were twice as fast as yours, and all that would take was them hitting you a couple times, and your car was totaled!! You literally had to juke and jive and bust a left, then bust a right, then bust another right then bust a left and pretty much zigzag your way all the way to the mission END & it still took you a good amount of tries to finally beat it, especially back then on the original graphics on a 19 inch picture tube television where you didn’t have the benefit of it being upscaled and graphically enhanced like you do today!! Masterpiece!

My memories of this game are pretty strange. I do remember driving the free roam maps and enjoying them a lot, but my defining memory is of inputting an insanely long game shark code that let me press one button to levitate my car, and another button to levitate everyone else's cars. This turned every police chase into an absolute clusterf***, because with the Press of a single button, I could jump over their blockades, or send them careening through the air into an out of bound Zone from which they could never return. Basically a telekinetic criminal simulator. Good times, good times...

Ah memories. I played it at a cousin's party for the first time and I was laughing so much while ramming into cars that my parents bought it for me. It took me a few hours to beat the tutorial, and I didn't know a ghost existed to help you. My favorite thing was just doing free driving on any map and take all the roads on the borders, this way I would make a perfect loop, all this while not enraging the cops. Also trying to damage a car so badly stuck in a corner that it would flip over and if you touch the bottom part of that car, your own car would start flying and spining in the air at incredible speed and get stuck in buildings, cop cars would also meet this fate, as I used a flipped car as a shield. And finally, running into a corner at full speed would put you out of the road, and you can drive outside of the map, on the sea, anywhere, but the game would crash if you go too far away. You would suddenly notice cops in the middle of nowhere and if you drive to where the cop car was supposed to be, a full traffic and weird roads would suddenly appear, that was crazy.

People complain that the game is difficult due to its cryptic puzzles but for me the part of it that made me quit the game was one of the boss fights. It is the 4th boss, specifically. The puzzles up until the 4th boss was hard but I still managed to solve most of them without looking up a guide. I've even heard from a guy that beat it without a guide that he spends hours and hours on the game without making any progress on any of the puzzles. YEARS later, of course I tried to complete the hardest level in videogame history: Driver's forced tutorial. It's WEIRD in that the difficulty isn't in skill level, but in obscurity: they don't let you practice, there's a time limit and a HUGE list of tasks you have to do within a minute with no rhyme or reason. But the worst thing wasn't even that, but how it doesn't explain the controls. As you said, there's an in-game movie that DOES show which button is pressed, and that hints you that for some moves you use circle or triangle, but I STILL couldn't figure out how exactly the reverse 180 turn works. Low res in PS1 didn't help matters. Crazy Taxi, a game from around the same era, has obscure driving mechanics that require you to shift to reverse gear THEN back to powerslide or something, I could never manage that either. But that game didn't require mastering it before starting at least. Oh there's an actual game after Driver's tutorial that 99% didn't even see. The test isn't even that hard if you FIGURE OUT what the game wants from you, it's still HORRIBLE design to start with a goddamn exam, Gran Turismo had license tests but those weren't all mushed into one minute at least (tho having to do a clean lap on time limit before starting the most basic tournament was ridiculous, so were starting and stopping exercises that have you drive in a line for 40 seconds each time and then GUESS the braking point). Anyway, late 90s games were real weird with how they wanted to gate the main game behind tests, and even GT later made those optional, thing with these things is that if you figure ho to cheese them they aren't as much of a challenge, just annoyances. So it's the bad/fake difficulty either way.

childhood memory unlocked. I used to love this game. I distinctly remember trying to jump the draw bridge. I bet this game is really playable using an old version of Wine on Linux since they have preserved all the old Win32 API calls and graphics libs at the time. Probably like version 2 or 3 or so

I beat this game when I was 14 when it first came out! Being I was a huge fan of Destruction Derby and it was one of the games I got with my PlayStation at 11 for Xmas, Driver was something I absolutely could not wait for!! I Loved the Tough, but manageable Difficulty and being as I grew up on a Junkyard and have been Driving since I was 3, ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE REALISTIC HANDLING PHYSICS!! One of my favorite games of all time, and the Hollywood style chasing you could make were amazing Beck then! Great video !!!

The physics in this vgame were insane. I remember playing with a friend in the Sam Francisco hills screen, challenging each other to make the cop cars on thebrear go flying and land on the cop cars that were creating a barricade in the front. I think our top score was 5 (it was no easy feat tho)

What a hard game to beat! For some reason, I never played the second, but I played the third. Driv3r was awesome; it wasn't perfect, but it was fun to play and also very hard. I still remember a mission about chasing a lady in a white convertible car. I didn't have enough ability, so I tried it over and over for days, and one day I did it.

Yo this game was the bomb lol. The boys and I used to play it all the time, but not for the story. Not sure what game mode it is, but we used to play the one where you would get swarmed by an infinite amount of cop cars until they eventually stopped you. It was single player, but we'd take turns for hours and hours, seeing who could last the longest, and it never got old.

I actually STILL HAVE my original copy of Driver You Are The Wheelman on PC!! Better yet, does anyone remember that iconic car crashing sound in this game (the one with the distinctive glass shatter heard immediately after impact)? Well, the sound file for that sound ("CRASH1.WAV") was actually recorded from the parking garage scene in the 1978 movie "The Driver"! But there's MORE to this sound effect than that! It was actually used in numerous movies dating from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The following is all the titles that I found it in: 1. The Pink Panther (1963) 2. Batman (1966)(Heard in the Season 1 episode "Batman Makes The Scenes"). 3. Lady in Cement (1968) 4. The French Connection (1971). 5. Vanishing Point (1971) 6. A Reflection of Fear (1972)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the movie or not) 7. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) 8. Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (1972-1985) 9. M*A*S*H (1972-1983) 10. Shaft's Big Score (1972)(high pitched variant)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the final movie or not). 11. The Mechanic (1972)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the movie itself or not) 12. The Poseidon Adventure (1972) 13. The Last American Hero (1973) 14. The Seven-Ups (1973) 15. 99 and 44/100% Dead (1974)(heard in trailer at least, I don't know if it's in the movie itself or not) 16. The Towering Inferno (1974) 17. Race With The Devil (1975) 18. The Devil's Rain (1975) 19. The French Connection II (1975) 20. The Kansas City Massacre (1975) 21. Cannonball (1976) 22. Gator (1976) 23. Silver Streak (1976) 24. Damnation Alley (1977) 25. Smokey & the Bandit (1977)(original mono soundtrack only) 26. Wizards (1977) 27. The Driver (1978) 28. Hooper (1978) 29. The Hunter (1980)(heard in trailer at least) 30. The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (1980)(heard at the beginning of the episode "Get Along, Little Jerry"). 31. Eyewitness (1981)(heard in trailer but NOT the final film) 32. The Fall Guy (1981-1986)(heard in the Season 3 episodes "Dirty Laundry" and "The Last Drive"). 33. Cagney and Lacey (1982-1988)(variant/possible alternate take)(heard in the Season 3 episode "Unusual Occurrence") 34. The Soldier (1982). 35. Hunter (1984-1991)(Heard in the episode "Hard Contract") 36. Impulse (1984)(heard in trailer but NOT in the film) 37. The Terminator (1984)(ONLY in the original mono mix) 38. Commando (1985) 39. Mischief (1985) 40. The Man With One Red Shoe (1985) 41. Stingray (1985-1987)(heard in the Season 2 episode "One Way Ticket to the end of the line") 42. Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986)(heard in trailer but not in the final film) 43. Maximum Overdrive (1986)(heard in trailer, but NOT the film itself) 44. Death Before Dishonor (1987)(used in a heavily fragmented form) 45. Killer Clowns from Outer Space (1988)

Still am hugely nostalgic for it and pick it up every couple of years. "The president run" was partly a luck based mission, since the spawning of the police cars appear to be random. You should check out Driver San Francisco if you can, it is great. Sadder still if the fact I still unlocked the RYNO by doing hoverboard races and got good enough to the point I could jump over most of the race! I would return about 16 year's later aftering beating all of the other Ratchet and Clank games and find myself beating it first try and ever having to WAIT for the water to catch up! Still I'm happy to have returned to the game and finally put it to rest
