I am from Somalia: Kafia Ahmed at TEDxMogadishu

Kafia's parents moved from Somalia to Virginia in the eighties, where she was born and raised. After graduating magna cum laude with a B.A. in International Studies and a minor in Public Law, Kafia dedicated a year to national service with City Year New York in East Harlem. Kafia then worked for the Diamond Empowerment Fund, a nonprofit that supports higher education initiatives in diamond producing African nations. In 2011, Kafia began graduate school at NYU in social innovation and creative activism in order to create platforms that empower individuals and inspire positive social movements around the globe. Kafia has published articles for Beyond Good Ideas and Global Grind.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The great Somalia. Funny I can't think of one positive contribution they have made to the human race. Any suggestions. I just think of shout people and pirates. Please educate me about your scientists, philosophers, inventors, artists, writers, composers, architects?

I'm sorry you think of pirates when you think of Somalia. However, surprisingly I don't blame you. What is said about Somalia in the media isn't exactly correct. I mean anyone knows that right? The media is known for twisting stories to make them more appealing, hence you shouldn't believe everything you read. Now I DO blame you for not researching. Assuming you know not to believe everything you see, something called research can help in one's understanding of a subject, in this case, Somalia. Somalia was a war torn country, destroyed by civil war. Luckily, the great people of Somalia who wanted good for the country re-built the country, making it the beautiful country it is today. After everything the people and the country has been through, there's been amazing progress. There are many, many things and professions achieved by Somali individuals worldwide, so id appreciate it if you could try a little harder in over coming this ignorance, and educating yourself, I mean try googling it for a start. They don't have to identify as 'Somali' for you to know they exist,. In my view, if a nation can overcome something like that and prosper without its history holding it back, then that is a 'positive contribution' to its country, its people.
