I chuckled at the comment, but I always thought it was a brilliant direction by director/editor/writer. Piano is playing but then the violin and chimes come in as if she is going to a different place. Then the lights change, and she goes to her "zone" where the band jumps in and stays while she remains in the zone. Then when she comes out of it, lights go out and she is back in the room and the band is gone and it is just her and the piano. But again, I did like the comment.

I always loved this scene. It represented so much the aspirations and dreams of young people wanting to break through into Broadway but it carries over to any dreamer. Love the video!

Ivy being nervous at the 'Bombshell' audition, and late to the orange juice commercial audition, meant she missed out on both (with Bombshell, obviously she gets the role but she shares it with Karen as a result of them seeing Karen). If she had been ok at the Bombshell audition, and was there on time at the orange juice commercial audition, then chances are she would have been successful both times! She can't complain about missing out when Karen only got both because of her own actions (being nervous isn't her fault, but she should have prepared better as she knows she still gets nervous during auditions).

Why wouldn't they just leave the piano and her vocals? It makes no sense to add to the track, it takes from her performance. Sometimes the editing ruins everything.

No way anyone would dress like that for a serious audition to play Marilyn Monroe.

If this was a real audition for a Marilyn Monroe musical this definitely wouldn't cut it 😬

I actually think it would due to being a different version of Marilyn. One could see this song as an inner monologue to herself about how the world treats her. How she struggles with finding her own self respect without the world’s interpretation of her being the ways she sees herself. Maybe song wouldn’t fit the musical’s style but you would see a glimpse of how the actress could appreciate the character

Actually, it could very well make it. When you audition, especially for a role based on a real person, you never want to just do an imitation of that person (which, in the show, is what pretty much every other person auditioning is doing). Rather, you want to to show the essence of that person while demonstrating your own personality, range, and talent. That song does this quite well.

I was really irritated by Tom in this scene. He basically made his choice already in casting Ivy as Marilyn, so he never gave any of the other girls a chance. He basically wrote the musical so Ivy could be the star.🙄
