    An interesting pattern I'm beginning to observe, when I watch higher rated players and compare them with machines like Alpha Zero, is that in many cases it's not about being able to analyze deeply certain positions but rather about realizing that some positions or styles of play feel less familiar to what you're accustomed to as "normal or good play". This game really showcases how both Ba3 and moves f3, e4 just don't feel natural to your usual style of play. Therefore, you're more prone to not even take them into consideration. It's interesting because it depicts the psychological factor of what would have otherwise exclusively been a game of calculation. It's not the lack of calculative abilities that made you rule out these choices. It was more of a psychological bias that didn't allow you to conceive them in the first place.

    yeah we humans don't have massive calculative skills, or if we do try to use it we can't keep up for a long period of time without getting too tired before game ends (classic), or it'd take too long for shorter times. Therefore, we took our advantage into play, which is recognition of patterns, aka memory + intuition. It helps us play more efficiently (very important) so we don't burn out after each game, and with high enough effectiveness/success rate that, by trial-and-error and heritage, we decided such is the best way to play for humans. It surely will trip us from time to time but in the long run it allows our puny brain to play more games more successfully overall. That's my take on interpretation of your observation. Machines ofc don't have such limits and work completely different. However, as I read from some reddit/quora posts machines spend much more energy than human does in a calculating and playing a game so i guess we're still in a way possibly more efficient and effective. 🤔

    I am just a beginner in chess but Levys videos about AlphaZero are so interesting. The big takeaway I have from them is that the computer loves space. I think humans are not always taught chess in this manner and it is hard to see it. We think instead in terms of things that make immediate sense to us like threats, checks, etc. How am I going to take pieces from my opponent and win material? Whereas AlphaZero seems to look instead at how do I win space against my opponent. The move of the match is Ba3 and I think Levy does not see it because he is right. It doesn't make immediate logical sense. The bishop is not threatening anything. And it makes the bishop "bad." However that move also effectively neutralizes Levy's rook and pawn and buys a ton of time for black to get back into the game and slowly start to suffocate Levy. And many turns later Levy's only option is to lose material and sac his rook. However that is not immediately apparent when you first see the move. It is thinking about the game on a very different way and I think as humans it is very hard to see.

    Well, you are right, but that is, at a point, a good thing and it's about playing lots of games. The reason we don't calculate everything is because in an opening, it would be a waste of resources for our brain to calculate a3 or calculate a silly move that gives a queen for a pawn. So actually, while we play chess, our brain plays a an energy- efficient calculation game. And what makes you a good player is, at a point, to teach your brain which moves aren't a waste of energy. It is amazing.

    I’d love to see Levy just roll out and play a tournament on pure instinct and confidence. It seems like the common theme in a lot of these recaps is “I had the right idea, thought about something else, played it and was inaccurate.” It’d be so awesome to see Levy roll up like “What’s up fuckers, I’m the shit, boutta smash all you dogs” I think he’d do really well. What Levy needs is an alt account where he just goes for the kill, full on all-in attack, even if he doesn't see the mate. That will teach him to do the same OTB and his full potential will be unleashed. We all can see the potential within him, he is kinda like early Goku, he doesn't go for the kill when he has the advantage.

    8:53 I have often wondered about your chess play. As a teacher and someone who knows so many different ways to play, I often wonder if sometimes, the reason you get discouraged or aggravated is because you try to do too much and, outsmart yourself instead, of just making the simple best play on the board. It seems like that was the situation.

    I said this for game 1 but I just want to reiterate that these tournament recaps are top tier chess content. It's my favorite Gotham series. It's fascinating seeing the thought process and analysis of titled tournament play. Also, I really appreciate Levy's laid back "I'm just having fun" attitude. Indeed, sometime's your best just isn't good enough, and that's life. Doesn't mean we can't enjoy the process grow along the way.

    Yeah Ba3 and b4 were quite difficult to see from the white side of the board. But you are right that if you see a simplification like Ne4 that just leaves you a pawn up plus only black has weakness, then surely you should go for it without thinking twice, because a move like b3 instead, weakens your black squares and it just feels that it can give black counter chances (even if you don't see his Ba3 and b4 option).

    i actually saw that e5 at 21:27 as the most natural move in that position. 2 open files for my passed pawn? "put the house on E-file!" also sac the c-knight for the b-pawn since it has nearly 0 moves anyways, can be forced from that spot with b4, is blocking my bishop, _and_ since black completely dominates the D file, this will open up the C-file for me. chisel the A bishop out of there with Bc3-b2, aRb1, Kf. Bam. As Prince John once told Sir Hiss, "Get out of That, if you can."

    This is good, a pattern is emerging of your strengths and weaknesses against similarly skilled opponents. That means you actually have something concrete to study moving forward. I think that's something that's hard to spot if you normaly only play one or two people at your skill level not in a Blitz game

    6:51 Is Nxb5 a move here? I know it's 2 pieces for a rook (and pawn), but black get a weak split pawn structure on the queenside, it's an open position which should favor the rooks and it would make it much easier for Levy to start pushing his pawn majority.

  • @vetgirig4209

    @vetgirig4209

    Yes it is however Levy's mental block and not using his pawns to their full advantages - being up 2 pawns is not a good idea. Trading a bishop and knight would have been a much better option. That way he will be forced to push his pawns since he has alot fewer pieces on the board.

    You should do a series where you have to play from a losing position. You can title it "Creating Counter-play" or something. In the low elo games you can just hang a piece for free, and then later maybe a piece for a pawn, then maybe a rook for a knight or bishop. and in the high elo games maybe just get into a bad position but one that still has life in it. You could just make custom games and start the game from the losing position. Anyway I just think it would be pretty informative and it plainly sounds like good content. (I've commented this 9 times and I'll continue to do so until either Levy responds, or I see the series. Or maybe I'll give up who knows?)
