Honestly, i did strict Lion Diet for over 60 days, and it had profound effects on my gut health, and really calmed things down in terms of inflammation, but i was not feeling good after a while no matter how much meat/fat/electrolytes i was pounding. Adding back in some fruit and dairy have actually helped me to feel pretty damn good and imrpove sleep and energy. Mostly berries and melons, the easily digested and hydrating fruits, and some honey seem to work best. Just my personal experience.

You may have been dumping oxalates. Happened to me in cycles. Berries are high in oxalates, so when you reintroduce them, the body stops clearing them. If you don't have issues with excess accumulated oxalates, that is fine. I had joint pain and needed to get rid of them. Now I have zero pain, so the process was worth it.

When I first heard of Carnivore, it was via Paul Saladino and I thought that's how your supposed to do it. I felt awesome from cutting out all the other crap and also intermittent fasting, but would always be hungry. Always. Even after 2-4 pounds of meat, when it stopped tasting good, i would have to have some fruit and/or honey and then would start addictively eating meat or other animal products again, despite being stuffed. Then more fruit. Multiple dinners in one meal. It was just like the former life of bread, rice, and potato addiction. Skip to now, I do strict carnivore and am only sorta hungry maybe once or twice a day. Usually OMAD. Same 2 to 4 pounds of meat depending on exercise but the addictive and compulsive overeating is gone. I find Dr. Chaffee's method of "eat fatty meat until it stops tasting good" to be the best and easiest method to employ.

The order came with rice and beans and corn tortillas. I ate most of it , thinking how bad could that be? I have been carnivore like 7 months. Oh boy, oh boy.. the bloating, the gas, the joint pain, the hip pain and the brain fog. Finally last night I felt better. Never again! In a way, I am glad I tried, just to realize how much my life had changed since I started carnivore! and how bad would it be if i start eating other stuff again.

No more gas - like NONE. No more bloating, sudden urges to go, stomach rumbles or bubbles. I wish i new about this years ago, I would have saved a ton on tp. As for physical performance, my lifting, running and endurance has significantly increased so no need for the fruits. Great topic Shawn 💪

I can eat fruit with meat, in season and small amounts. It actually seems to aid my digestion and I feel pretty good. I cannot mix meat and veggies unless they are actually a fruit. So if I eat salad it's just greens with a bit of olive oil and vinegar. I also find that onions and garlic go well with eggs. I stopped lifting things that didn't need lifting some while ago. As being diagnosed as T2D 8 years ago at the age of 50, I went down the road of drug educed continuity, but found that the drugs caused severe reactions in me. I therefore went to a Keto and eventually Keto/Carnivore diet, the results, no medication, total control of T2d, at the time, aged 50 actually felt like I was 30 again, it was amazing, at the time and now, 35g of carbs per day, anything more produces side effects, just my personal reaction. 8 years later, this thing works for me, almost all my medical practitioners are against it for "cholesterol" reasons, and want me on a Statin, I have refused all medication, including the state injectable, (for obvious reasons). I still plant 1000+ trees per day and out perform people whom are way younger than me, I prefer to work for a living and work for a lifestyle, rather than go to a gym. Whilst I appreciate people like Shaun, whom presumably earns a good amount to live on, I cannot afford to not work, I could not spend 4 hours or more a day in the Gym, I do not know what other people do for a living, or what that living pays, but I know that I have had countless people say "I work out in the gym, and can plant the number of trees that you do" yet they do well to last a day, let alone 2 or even better, showing potential 3 days of planting 1000+ per day. It just simply does not happen, just a personal opinion, but work harder in the real world, you will need to work less in the gym. The gym has its place, but should only be king if your "work" is not really physical.

Carnivore for 1 month now and doing ok. Looking forward to feeling better and better. As far as fruit and veg go, they've made up an important part of my diet these last almost 57 years. However, knowing that fruit is picked not ripe, and sprayed even when organic, same with vegetables, made it so easy to let them go, just like that. Good for you Dr. Baker to know that fruit doesn't work for you a fact that probably would have become more pronounced had you continued. I know my body well enough as well to know when it's off from something I've eaten and because I know this, I can catch things early before I develop a real issue that may take time to heal. From 2012-2023, before starting carnivore, I was gluten-free and this helped me tremendously as far as skin issues and digestive ones. I didn't go for all of the gluten free garbage that is out there so I felt ok but I had so many people tell me that they could never do it as they loved their food too much and would rather eat what they wanted despite it having been recommended that they cut out gluten for their health issues. They still opted to continue eating certain foods and take meds for the symptoms that these foods caused rather than go without. It was too hard, they said. I guess bad health wasn't depriving them of anything. This always amazed me and made me feel sad for them. Some people have maybe never felt good so telling them that they could feel good if they went carnivore really means nothing as they have nothing to compare to.

I was a pretty strict carnivore for 5 years. Mostly beef, eggs, fish, cheese and bacon. I felt great but my problem was I would have to pee 3-4 times a night. This wasn’t a prostate issue, these were big long pees. It was actually in a Dr Baker video that I learned that urine was a byproduct of gluconeogenesis. My theory was that since I am quite active that my body was making lots of glucose at night. Thus making me pee. I started adding yogurt, honey and some fruit mostly at dinner about 5 months ago. This has made a noticeable difference in the amount of times I have to get up and pee. I prefer the way my body looks and feels on strict carnivore but getting up to pee all night sucks. For now I’m keeping the carbs.

Thank you Dr. Baker for your honesty and non-dogmatic approach to everything you cover. I did strict carnivore for a year and a half after a year of keto. Carnivore helped me to eliminate my gut inflammation and arthritis, but I struggled with my electrolytes and chronic, unrelenting bathroom urgency even after adjusting macros, taking supplements, doing lion diet, etc.... I tried it all. Starting in January, I tried Dr. Saladino's approach and started eating more organs, small amounts of fruit and a little honey, but I'm still mostly carnivore. As a former binge-eater, I was nervous doing this, but I have had absolutely zero cravings since making this adjustment and my bathroom urgency and electrolyte issues are both fixed. I'm happy and feeling good. Carnivore was such an amazing reset button for me, and I think I'll probably try incorporating "carnivore cycles" throughout the year. I like to experiment. I think we can all agree that there's no "one-size fits all" diet out there, as we're all different individuals. :)

You know it's funny, people love to say "you need carbs to achieve high athletic performance" but I never hear them explain it on a scientific level. Yet the carnivore doctor-athletes seem perfectly capable of explaining why carnivore produces such incredible athletic performance! I actually have experience in my sport both as a carb eater and a carnivore. I was a varsity distance runner in high school. My mom made sit-down dinners every night and there was always meat, veg, and a starch (although I've always hated most starch foods like potatoes/sweet potatoes, rice, beans, and pasta so I never ate them). I usually ate buttered eggs from our own free range chickens on my mom's homemade sourdough for breakfast. So I was eating fairly "clean" and was definitely getting my animal based foods in, but also eating a lot of fruits, vegetables and bread. I never felt good running. I actually used to fantasize about tripping and getting hurt at practice just so I had an excuse to stop. My race performances were wildly inconsistent-- one week I ran a 5:40 mile and the next week I couldn't get under 6:10. I felt sick, I got a lot of cramps, and I often had this sensation like all of the energy was just being sucked straight down out of my legs. Now, as a carnivore for 18 months, I cannot seem to find the limit to my energy when I run. The only way I can produce that same queasy feeling is if I sustain an all-out sprint. My normal long distance runs always feel great, even when I'm pushing myself, my body gives me what I ask for without complaint. I feel the EFFORT but I don't feel PAIN when I run now. Absolutely night and day difference. And FWIW, I was completely sedentary and very ill with autoimmune issues and severe mental health disorders for ten years before going carnivore, and in only a few months of training I actually beat my high school 5k PR by almost an entire minute, and felt amazing doing it. So I can't speak for others, but for myself, I definitely do not need carbs for athletic performance.

You need carbs for endurance and high performance. It's the preferred fuel for muscles. Even the fat adapted athletes will take glucose during ultra marathons and cycling races to avoid bonking. If you are just lifting weights a few times a week or doing 4 minutes on a rowing machine, you don't need to carb up because gluconeogenesis turns part of your steaks into glucose for storage in your muscles for those small amounts of training. But if you go long distance, you will bonk

@@pureblood6492 Wrong. People have been consuming carbs as long as agriculture has existed, but there have been people on this planet for far longer than that. We are not descendants of animals which grazed the savannas of Africa, feasting on broccoli and potatoes. We did not migrate following the ripening grasses, so that we could pick the seeds from the tops of the stalks and eat them. We did eat ripened fruit, during the brief periods of time when it was available. But then it was gone. Then we returned to our main diet. Human beings are not obligate carnivores, but we are carnivores. We have the ability to consume other nutrients on an opportunistic basis. But we are mainly carnivores. gluconeogenesis is done by the liver, and has a variety of different sources.

I still consider myself to be carnivore because my diet on a regular basis are only animal foods. Once in a while I get a coupon for avocados and will eat them though but most of the time I don't eat any plants. I like berries every once in a while in the spring time too though that's also relatively low carb. I don't pretend these don't have bad chemicals in them and it's probably better not to eat fiber if we can avoid it but I also have to live life in ways that makes me happy. If I'm carnivore 99% of the time then eating the occasional keto treat or avocado is still going to help me more than being on the standard American way of eating.

I kind of imagine that ancestrally wild fruit might be consumed at very specific times of the year (summer only) where i live but where i was born in California maybe all year BUT imagine that these wild fruits (mainly berries) have quite a bit of energy expenditure involved in just accessing them ie: during a hike or a foraging type walk/hike. In these circumstances the energy currently in use would utilize that sugar. Which makes sense because these foods digest quickly.

all this people saying yeah I am carnivore since 2000, had an apple an felt bad, so apples are bad...NO! that is...dumb. Your body takes a long time to adapt to changes, if you didnt give it anything other than meat for years, its obvious it will "suffer" if you suddenly give it something different. That doesnt mean apples are "bad" it just means you made the mistake of specializing your bowels to a single food group. Vegans also will say "been vegan for 400 years, had a steak and got sick" OBVIOUSLY. If you want to live in ketosis fine but that just means your body "fabricates" glucose and other needed sugars the "hard way", which is great if you want to lose weight, maybe better to teach your body to be omnivore once you find the right weight.

@UTAH100 glycates 7x more than glucose and must be processed by the liver and it can only process 30 to 40g at a time. Any extra is stored as fat in the liver, contributing to nafls (non alcoholic fatty liver syndrome). It also has been shown to contribute to dementia and gout to name a few things. We have a decent mechanism for processing glucose if metabolically healthy, but that seems to not be the case for fructose.

Food combining is important here. Fruit should typcically be eaten by itself. It digest extremely fast, alot faster than protein, so if you eat it after a heavy meal it will begin to ferment. You can test this by having a meal then eating some watermelon after. Watermelon is one of the quickest digesting fruits so will begin to ferment quickly.

If someone tried carnivore for 5 days and quit after complaining of GI discomfort, we'd tell them they need much longer than that to adjust. It's good that you gave it a shot, but this doesn't seem like a true good faith effort. It would be interesting to hear your results after 30 days of 200-300 grams of carbs, maybe from a combination of white rice and fruit. Edit: I'd been lifting consistently and eating low carb for years, and was in pretty good shape. 6 months ago, I shifted my focus in the gym to dedicated hypertrophy training, and after a few weeks I added in 200+ grams of carbs per day. I noticed my pumps got much better, and I had more gas in the tank to grind out those hard reps close to failure. Of course, there are many variables at play here, so YMMV.

Thanks for not being too dissuasive of it. I think healthy exercising people can probably tolerate some carbohydrate in a day, since their muscles draw up the most of it. I'm not sure that fruit is the best option because of the fructose, which can tax the liver unnecessarily when carbs are usually wanted for exercise glycogen repletion. I have to say that usually it makes no difference to me whether I have some or not but I do have some days I under eat or don't sleep and recover well and my lifts just fall flat, like half, and I think maybe that's glycogen depletion. I like to eat some nonstarchy veg and sometimes stuff with more starch like squash, and fruit when I pick it myself, but I think that the majority of health issues these days are due to overeating and processed food. Carnivore fixes both usually, and removes all possibly inflammatory foods so you can see what may affect you when you add things back. But I do see healthy people in other countries keeping active and eating bread, cheese, butter, even some wine and yet are more healthy than the average American because they eat less and move more and eat less processed chemical food and sugar.
