I 3D Printed a Transmission: How Strong is it?
Ғылым және технология
Today, I 3d printed a 3 speed manual transmission. The transmission was made for my 3d printed air engines and other purposes. This specific type of transmission is what's known as a 'dogbox' since it does not use any synchro meshes but rather dog gears instead. The intention of the design is to allow one to shift the transmission while under load, unlike a typical transmission. Race cars are often equipped with this type of transmission as they can handle much more power.

This is a low speed, low power transmission. An electric drill, although torquey, isn't unloading a couple hundred horsepower and foot-pounds into each gear.

I might be a bit late, but one substitute for the plastic bushing could be a yo-yo bearing. They're about half the size to a quarter of the size of a skateboard bearing. Not entirely sure if they can withstand a good compression as all they do is hold the string of a yo-yo. But could be worth giving a try to reduce wear and having to replace the plastic bushing as often. Awesome video though!

I am not sure what filament material you are using, but i would suggest PETG as an alternative to PLA as it has a lower coefficient of friction to PLA and would help with keeping the tolerances tighter while keeping an easier slip fit for the clutches.

Thank you! I am not working on the engine now as I am far too busy to, I've decided to move towards bigger and better projects instead
Maybe redesign the dog gears to have a 45° incline before a positive 90° lockup between gears. Maybe the friction between the gear and dog gear will allow for a smoother transition instead of a higher torque shock when shifting between gears. Provided, such friction in motor vehicle transmissions would wear down the components much faster, but for a 3D printed model, it might make it smoother without requiring synchros. How'd you make the shift forks and how do they mesh with the shifter?
You should def make a transaxle
IT BLEW THE SHAFT
May I suggest duplicating the Constantinescu Torque Convertor?
you should make a clutch too and hook it up to a 3D printed engine!
There is an very old video on you tube from like the 50s explaining how manual transmissions work.
I wouldn't mind seeing this in a 3d printed car with the air power engine.
Any way you could test that transmission and torque converter on a three or six horsepower moter? Im sure the go kart community would be pleased.
Oh cool! you made a dogbox!
Now you should make an automatic to match your fluid coupler. However I don’t know how you could do that remotely easily
Bros been avoiding annual car inspections since 2000

Hey I stumbled upon your page and I would like to follow your footsteps and print some similar themed mechanical parts, I was wondering what filament you youse for your projects and if you have any tips or tricks?
@CamdenBowen
Жыл бұрын
I mainly use PETG for all my filaments, when you print parts that interact with another 3d printed part you generally want a tolerance of 0.5mm. If the part interacts with a machined part like a rod, you want 0.25mm of tolerance

CVTs are also use in tractors, but they do not use belts they rely on hydralic systems and they can handle 700hp easily, in tractors cvts are slowly becoming the standard
You are loading the transmission with centrifugal force from the flywheel. Would of been nice to see how much torque it could output before it started to break apart. The being that the break was at the drill the test only showed that the immediate torque from the drill which can be extreme broke your input shaft.
can we get the files by any chance i wanna try this
Bro made a Dog Box
Have you thought about making a sequential gearbox? Instead of a standard H, you would just have to bump the shifter forward to upshift or bump it backwards to downshift.
@CamdenBowen

I'm thinking of combing the fluid coupler with a design like that to make a sort of semi automatic transmission, similar to the experience of using a tiptronic system in some cars
I've been looking into finding an affordable self lubricating filament to print bearings and piston rings with. I hear nylon is decent do you know of any?
@CamdenBowen

I am actually not too sure, I know that hard filaments like PLA when sanded very smooth actually have very low friction in those cases without the need for lubrication as long as they are not under high stress

I am going tomake your gearbox,what size shaft and bearings did you use? and what are the gear ratios?
@CamdenBowen

The rods are 8mm in diameter and the bearings are 608 skateboard bearings. For the gears, gear 1 is 2:1, gear 2 is 1.5:1 and gear 3 is 1:1. Hope this helps!

Put it on the VTEC😂
Soooo You wouldn't download a Car!??? Moment
that way of engaging gears really sucks. a differential can be used to engage gears using breaks. so the gears dont grind but thats why the clutch is used. my idea would pretty much use a different break for each gear and no clutch needed. just got to find a way to organize all the differentials in some compact way to make the breaks on the outside so there easily replaceable.
Brass gears aren't that hard to cut with a triangle file!
why are your videos always so silent
this thing looks like an AI generated figurine.
Now add it yo your vtec engine
0:25 Plastic on plastic makes little friction, until you load the gears or at high speed. Without proper lubrication, which I don't see in any of your creations, your creations will not last long.
