i miss driving on this bridge. the road surface is so smooth that i went well and beyond the speed limit in the Chinese section... The sub-sea tunnel asphalt surface is the best i have ever driven too. 10/10!

It's remarkable how little traffic is on this bridge. Apparently drivers from bkth the SARS and Mainland China need to jump through a lot of bureaucratic hurdles to actually be able to use the bridge. Surely someday that'll change, this really isn't being used to it's potential.

To drive on the bridge legally, you need to purchase three separate insurances (Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau), a yearly permit for the bridge toll gates and a three year permit to restricted zone in Hong Kong. The entire process is mind boggling and cost upwards of US$500 per year to maintain

actually is a win for them, the bridge has proven that it is faster to use the ferry, but cheaper to use the bus. And the same company controls both mode of transportation, instead of losing out, they're not making money on both!

Based on some speed comparisons of 25 seconds and counting of some light poles I calculated that the slow down between 3:39 and 4:05 is around 7.5 (7.375 ~ 7.625) times slower, so those 25 seconds is worth about 3.3 seconds of sped up time. Travel time: 4:24 (From the moment of counting to end of counting) Travel time while able to count: 3:39 (219 seconds) Travel time while not able to count: 0:45 Counted 134 vehicles going in the opposite direction. Avg of observed vehicles/second over 219 seconds = 0.6118 vehicles / second Est. of 0:45 = 27 vehicles Est. of 4:24 = 161 (134+27=161, checks out) Anyways here is the timings and my showing of work / raw data: 0:42 start the speed run and counting... 2:16 2:58 tunnel 1 starts 0:38 3:36 tunnel 1 exit 0:03 3:39 sped down tempo 0:03 (from 0:25) 4:05 back to sped up tempo 0:55 5:00 tunnel 2 start 0:07 5:07 tunnel 2 exit 0:22 5:29 end of counting Note: 7 vehicles also passes the camera man :O
