HYUNDAI STEERING WHEEL NOISE : HOW TO FIX - SONATA/ OPTIMA 2011-2014 UNDER $20!! FAST & EASY!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hello Guys! Here we bring you another how to video.
We purchased a 2013 Hyundai Sonata and the steering wheel started making a clunk/click noise every time is moved from left to right...
The problem is a small rubber coupled that goes inside the steering wheel pump. This is a common problem amongst these vehicles and it’s also a recall!! So you can actually get this fixed for free at a shop if your vehicle qualifies. Just get your VIN number and run it on Hyundai website and see if it will cover it. Or you can call your local Hyundai dealer and they should tell you if it’s covered or not! Well don’t worry if they ain’t got you covered... I know I do!
In this video we replaced the small rubber coupler and in order for us to achieve that we had to lower the steering column! It’s a very simple process all it takes is a bit of patience, time and of course... common sense!
*FIX IS VERY INEXPENSIVE! PART COST UNDER $20USD AT DEALERSHIP*
Do me a favor and hit the like and subscribe buttons if my video helped you. Also don’t forget to share if someone is looking for a solution to this problem!

Notes to people trying this: 1) Unhook the negative battery lead after taking out the screws in the steering wheel. 2) Move the driver's seat all the way back. 3) Have a T30 screw driver head ready.

@@nathanreed2889 Thanks for the response. It's been shaking at higher speeds for a while now, but only at around 80, but now it's happening at around 70 as well. I had the tires balanced and alignment done, and nothing fixed the problem. I'm thinking if this doesn't fix it, it may be the tie rods.

Been dreading this job for over a year and saving this video... finally did it today. That column is heavy and awkward for one person. Missed the small plug on the motor control board and got into a little trouble once the weight came down, but I got it lifted up and unplugged (need 3 or more hands). To lift it back in, wound up using a piece of paracord to hold up the front and the jack from the car under the heavy part in the back to guide it back up in there and get it hooked. Back together, no codes or exploded airbags, nice steering, ready for another 100K! Thanks for putting this guide together, got the job done for $3.20!

I fixed this yesterday. Took about 4 hrs. Everything was easy until I had to put the column hook back in. That was haaaard to line it up. I had to get a neighbor to help me align it and help lift. Idk if I was making it harder than what it was. So MAKE SURE to look at the angle and everything before you unhook it. No lights came on. My alignment is the same. The noise is gone. The part that was there was completely shreded. I did this on a 2013 kia optima. Have a great day!

I got the part on amazon for around $6. It's called a flexible coupling. I typed into google "flexible coupling 2013 kia optima" and the actual part number popped up too, that way you can find the right one on google. As far as tools i had a little tool set from walmart that was like $20, so I didnt beed to worry about that. I did exactly what he did. The THOUGHT of messing with the wires was scary to me BUT it was really easy. I paid attention to which ones went where and I took plenty of photos in case i forgot what plugs went into which hole. The absolute hardest part was getting the steering column hook back into it's hole. It frustrated me and it was heavy. I had a neighbor help me get it back into place. He and I used a jack to help us. Maybe i was making it harder than what it was because in other videos mechanics put it back with no problem. So make sure when you take off those last 4 screws that hold the column up look at the angle, the length, and take a picture just in case. As far as putting everything back, I did the exact order just backwards. Would i do it again? Hell yes. Did it save a lot of money? Hell yes. Was it easy? I'm not a mechanic, but it was easy enough.

Thanks bro! I knew the procedure but watching this makes me feel better about doing the job. Definitely easier than I thought it would be to drop that column. I'm about to do this to my grandma's sonata this coming weekend when the part arrives. I used to sell parts at a dealer and this was a very common problem. I remember the part number wasn't in the parts catalog but it instead was listed in a TSB that Hyundai released. This should have been a recall from the beginning. I do agree too, they are a very nice car. It'd be neat if their was a stick shift option. Once again thanks! Great Video!

I just repaired my 2012 Hyundai Sonata with this video and one other (to help reassemble). The video was pretty good. I DID discover that it was not necessary to remove all the electrical wires--such as the bottom panel which you can just move to the left side. Also, it is important to note that there are 3 T30 screws on the steering motor and the one on the back is very hard to reach if you do not remove the steering column (the T30 screws may be difficult to remove with a normal screwdriver/ratchet screwdriver [with the T30] because they are torqued at 8 lbs, I believe. I used an adjustable wrench on the T30 bit).

Veloster is a little different! I did it! This is by far the most complicated car repair I've done so far but I was able to do it because of this video and several others, also with my wife helping me lift the column back into place. On a 2012 Veloster, you will only have 2 vertical bolts (instead of 4) holding the steering column up near the wheel and then one in the back of the column (closer to the front of the car) going horizontally. The horizontal bolt will need some serious force to break it loose but you can do it. That's the only big difference I noticed. After I put everything back together, the car wouldn't crank. Turns out I had forgotten to plug a cable back in (ignition lol). So if something isn't right, just recheck your cables and make sure there aren't any spots with something not plugged in!

Just fixed mine today. Putting the steering column in was a challenge. To anyone else who has this problem, I recommend laying on floor and lifting it like your benching it. Once you hook it, you can use your knee to brace the steering wheel in place while you attach one of the nuts. Should be pretty straightforward from there

I have 2012 model, and where you took two nuts and two bolts out to drop the steering column, the 2012 has two nuts and a very hard to reach single pin way in the back. Thanks, man On mine, for whoever is doing 2012, the single bolt comes out from the right near the top of the gas pedal. To rehang the steering column, I put the column in place and held it with the two nuts, then aligned the holes for the bolt in the back. Actually all went back together easier than it all came apart

Thanks...you rock! 2014 Elantra GT a little different but this was a huge help! Elantra GT has bolt at the back of the column you need to remove to drop the column. !!!Important information!!! Disconnect the negative (-)battery terminal before you get under the dash with the Airbag! When putting it back together make sure the first thing you do after installing the rubber grommet is attach the the bolts at the front of the column this will support the column and line everything up at the back. I spent a great deal of time, effort and pain getting that bolt at the back installed. Once I attached the two bolts at the front it was like magic. Hope this saves someone about 2 hours laying on the floor board suffering! =)

Wondered what the hell was going on with my steering. Looked for the power steering reservoir and found none so figured that it had to be electronic. So very grateful for this video.

This was super helpful!! Thank you!!!! This was nearly step by step for me, except the two rear bolts that are shown around the 7:55 mark in the video, are different in my daughters two door Elantra GT coupe. There is a Single (15mm) bolt that aligns the rear of the steering column, if you have the manual Tilt/Telescoping steering wheel. To get to it its a pain, and you will need to lay upside-down with your head against the gas pedal to get it. You'll have to pull this bolt out to get the three T30 bolts, and swap out the Rubber steering coupler. Otherwise this video is spot on.!!! Great job Hildalgo Motors
