Tom is on the road again with the Hyundai Kona Electric - and he thinks it's the Goldliocks of electric cars.
You'll have to watch this in-depth review to find out why he thinks that, but we're huge fans of the Kona Electric.
Why? Well, there aren't many cars that can match a Tesla when it comes to range. But the Kona can. If you're one of those people who suffer from range anxiety then this smart family SUV is the car for you.

Here in Canada we have just the 64 KWh battery Kona. I’ve had mine for a year and I love everything about it except one thing, the front facing battery charge door is not sealed properly and is inadequate for our winters.

I own a Kona EV and the experience has had a VERY rocky start. I bought mine end of November last year. Drove it a few days, then it was in the shop for near SIX months straight. Yep. That's half a year. And if you look at various Kona forums, you'll notice that I'm not alone. The Kona has a few design flaws. The 12v battery (which powers the onboard electronics) tends to die on people, though the latest Battery Management System update supposedly helped with that. The Kona has a "Utility Mode" or "Tent Mode" or "Dog Mode", whatever you want to call it, where you can power the 12v systems from the high voltage battery. Ironically, for whatever reason, you CAN'T lock the doors with the key fob or the app as soon as you engage this really useful mode. You'll have to get the actual key out of the fob and lock the doors with that. Really, really stupid limitation for an otherwise great feature. Aside from that, a few more details: I regularly get >300 miles, even going up and down mountains on the freeway. While uphill the range drops by half, downhill it just mostly offsets that with excellent regen. However, the range is very much speed dependent. Going up to ~65-70mph is where I get the 300 miles. If it's flat country, I _can_ get around 330. If I go around 85mph, this drops significantly to ~250 miles. That's on days without any wind, of course. Now, that sounds impressive until you realize that you're not supposed to regularly charge to 100%, you're supposed to stop at 80%. Nor are you supposed to run below 20%. That leaves you with an effective usable capacity of 60% - which in my case equates to ~180 miles. Next, charging isn't linear. Charging to 80% takes ~30-40 minutes, give or take. Charging the remaining 20%... takes another 30-40 minutes, because the Kona slows down charging to a mere pathetic trickle near the end to preserve the battery. The recent BMS software update improved this a little, but not much. As long as you live somewhere where you never have to charge to 100%, you're good. As soon as you have to charge to 100% to get to the next charger, you're royally screwed. Last, if you're in the US and have to use Electrify America on long distance trips, make sure you choose their Hyundai select plan, otherwise you pay nearly double the price for charging. To do so is easy: In the Electrify America app, go to Premium Offers, choose Hyundai Select, enter your VIN to verify that you have a Hyundai, and enter the code "HSCharging". At that point you don't even need to pay the $4/month for premium.

wombatdk seriously doubting you're regularly getting >300 miles per charge. No mention of running heat or AC as they suck the range out of any electric car. Not a single Kona is getting 330 miles of max range. Perhaps going downhill for 330 miles. I'm going to take what you stated and subtract about 20% for real world driving. More if you're using AC or heat or driving faster than 60 mph.

@@fatbroadshorsefacedlesbian8619 If you drive like a granny, you certainly can. I nearly always drive in Eco, rarely Eco+. Always on regen level 3. You're right of course, AC and heat does eat into mileage. How much depends a whole lot on the AC/heat setting. I find that cooling down (or heating up) the car before leaving helps, as does parking in the shade thanks to a park deck at home and at work. Then all it needs is a pretty low setting to maintain the temperature. I suppose the "trick" to that is to never, ever go over 2 bars on the left-side power display. On flat freeway, no wind, that's easy-peasy even at freeway speeds. On my commute, that means 65mph for maybe 90% of the distance. Out of curiosity I drove like "normal" people here, once - aggressively accelerating, going 10-20mph over speed limit like everyone else. Predictably, economy dropped to a pathetic 3.6 miles/kWh, for a total theoretical range of 230 miles (in a cold 36°F). That was the price I paid for driving like an utter ass.

Should also mention that it’s the factory choice of tires (Nexens) that seems to be the mail culprit as far as the noise is concerned. Consequently a number of owners on the Kona FB forum (myself included) have changed them for quieter options. I went for Michelin Cross Climate + and then seem pretty good....

Great to see another EV-specific channel and I’m enjoying working my way through your reviews. Had t watch this one having owned a Kona electric for 18 months now (and 34k miles) and all I’ll say is that as my first BEV, it’s the best car I’ve ever owned by a country mile. Efficiency (and therefore the range with the 64kWh battery in particular) is particularly impressive and helpful when the charging infrastructure is still not always as reliable as it should be.

Saying how long it takes to charge to full is slightly misleading as it makes cars with bigger batteries (and longer range) appear worse than smaller-battery ones. On the other hand, if cars can charge at different RATES, then it is worth knowing. I like the comparison of how many miles can be added per hour.

I wish I could find a reviewer of the Kona EV that checked to see if it includes wireless Apple Car Play and wireless Android Auto. It would also be helpful if someone tested Apple Car Play on the screen in combo w/ the Hyundai infotainment panels. Does Apple Car Play project the turn by turn directions onto the HUD or are the turn by turn directions only available if you use the on board nav? I can't find one review that includes that information and that info is not on the Hyundai website.

A second review claiming to be of the 2020 model, but at least this one is, as you can see by peering at the enlarged AV screen, even if the reviewer gets the dimensions wrong. It’s utter nonsense to say that the granny cable is useful only for emergencies. Many people rely on it for overnight charging. In North America, with 120v x 12 amp household current, I can recover 100km in 12 hours, more than enough for most daily drives. You don't do anything for EV adoption by glibly suggesting that everyone needs to fork out more money for a Level 2 station at home.

I the UK Hyundai specifically state on the supplied granny cable that it's for emergencies only. Probably because not everyone's electrics are able to cope with the constant power draw. That said, I used mine for a year with no problems, but always made sure I didn't use it in it's highest setting, so the car was only charging at around 2kw, not 3.2. This way I was happy to leave it overnight without worrying about the plug socket over heating.

Unfortunately, people seem to think you "have" to charge from 0% every single day. What's the point of saying it takes 8 hours with a 7 kwh station to go from 0 to 100% on a 250 mile range Kona? Do you really drive 250 miles every single day? No. More likely 50 or so and in that case, it'll take 1-2 hours with a level 2 charger but you might as well just use a granny cable to charge those 50 miles overnight

  • @peterdonnelly6732

@@vladsaghin7644 Reviewers always give these numbers, for comparison and because the first thing people want to know is "how long does it take to charge?", but they seldom offer this perspective and are quite happy to leave you thinking you can only drive every third day if you rely on the granny cable.

There are four EVs with comparable fundamental specs: 1- Kona 2- Tesla 3 standard + 3- VW ID 3 4- Chevy Bolt or Ampera-e They can all be charged relatively quickly up to 80%. They all cost about the same, They are all efficient (Wh / mile). They can all lower the charge while charging. They can all recover a significant amount of power on regen. They all have batteries larger than 50-kWh. They all could be driven large distances without a tremendous time penalty for charging.

This year they will add to about 10% of car sales in Europe. Next year, it is expected that they will contribute 15% or car sales in Europe. They are all contributing to reducing greenhouse emissions. They are all contributing to the reduction of fossil fuels for transportation. Seems like a 2015 year car or have i missed anything? It does not have built in apps for stuff like Spotify and other music apps, no Netflix for passengers or the driver while charging. And don't speak about Android Auto and Apple carplay. That requires you to connect your phone and disconnect it like 6 times a day. I have that in my 2019 fossil car and it broke my charing port after between 6-12 months due to this heavy connect/disconnect. I dont want that shit. I want a modern car with Apps built in Like Tesla or Polestar. Paying for an rather expensive car and don't get those apps and also OTA updates is a total fail. Old Fossil car manufacturers must wake up and see that it's a new time for the last 5 years or so.
