Normally agree with your assessments but you've kinda lost the plot on this one. Yes people expect transport to be safe, but that doesn't mean there's never a fatality. It just means it's extremely unlikely you'll be at risk using it. And when you have a chip that gets moist and catches fire it makes it much more likely. People also expect to be able to garage their cars safely. The garage is meant to protect your car from theives, vandals and the weather. Those same insurance companies you say will do anything to recover cost will often give you a break on your premiums if you garage your car (or at least for the longest time use to). Your garage is traditionally built to keep your car safer, not to act as a man cave or storage unit, regardless of how they are now most often used.

JC, you have a talent for mixing humour with serious teaching, and I stuck with you to the end. I am in awe of both talents; job well done. I recall a few years back some Jeeps were actually lighting up while being driven, with news broadcasts actually showing the burning wrecks roadside - surprised to see it missed a mention. Also, I am aware many cars carry a certain risk, especially as they age, but I still have the expectation they are not going to fry me. I put my trust in the recall system to allow me to maintain that expectation.

Thanks, a very fair and well reasoned report, I am not worried about my Kia. I am a Chemical engineer, petrol cars were banned from entering my site on safety grounds, as you point out they have so many potential risks, which are way below the standards required on a chemical site such as mine which handled flammable solvents. Our diesel fork trucks required so many safety modifications to make them comply that it nearly doubled their cost. It is as you say a credit to the engineers that design the vehicles that they are so safe. As an aside, I am advised by comments on social media, that nearly all EVs burst into flames.

I worked on a old kombi today. Changed a fuel line. I said to my father "these cars should catch fire all the time" he replied "they did" On another note. I would like public access to manufacture service fixes for known failures or defects for their products. From as small as glove box rattles all the way up to the major stuff. I feel this information should be free to owners and 3rd party repairer's. As far as abs failure I doubt hyundai or kia made that module themselves.

Greeting from Canada. This is the most professional piece of journalism I have ever heard. Someone with enough journalism skills to deliver effectively combined with enough technical knowledge and experience to know the subject material this well is quite extraordinary, so thank you, much appreciated. Oddly enough, my takeaway is not what might be expected. I live in Eastern Canada where there is plenty of snow, freezing rain, etc. during our winter months. I am grateful that I have a garage to keep my vehicle out of the weather as it means not clearing snow off the vehicle, scraping ice off the windows, etc. And, I never have any snow buildup on the vehicle which might unload unexpectedly. Now, I am having misgivings about storing my vehicle in the garage. I also have a snow thrower and an emergency power plant (both with internal combustion engines) that I also keep in that garage. I am going to revisit my thinking on these matters. Thanks again.

I own a vehicle that falls under this recall of an unexpected thermal event . The letter I received said the Dealership would be replacing a fuse and this would take an hour . I suspect there will be a software update also done which is not mentioned . I have no concerns and will get this recall performed on the vehicle . Last time I visited the dealership for the engine failure recall , I was treated like a second class stray dog by the service advisor and also asked to not bring the vehicle to that particular dealership again unless it was for a repair I would be paying for . Welcome to America .

I own a Kawasaki W800 motorcycle. It's a great little retro bike. I've owned it for a year. There have been two recalls on the model I bought. One was that the exhaust studs could be loose - so I torqued them up (they were OK but I backed them off and re-torqued them). Then I took it to a local dealer, and they checked my work. No issue at all. The other was the horn could be installed so that one wire could vibrate and snap. Again, I checked mine and it was affected i.e., the horn didn't work. This *is* serious. Making pedestrians or other road users aware of my presence if actually kind of important. I got to mine with some wire, heat shrink and a soldering iron. Then took it to a dealer and they replaced the whole horn unit. Why is this not a great example of how it is supposed to work? I like the system. Just my 10c worth.

I had a recall for this possible problem, on my 2017 Santa Fe T/diesel with the warnings about garage parking, etc. as outlined by John at about 23 min. The catch was that I'd booked to go to Tasmania on the Spirit of Tasmania vessel (return) before it could be attended to at my local dealer. When I told him about my trip, the service adviser said : "if you haven't had a problem by now, it's very unlikely for the problem to occur" so when I said, "what happens if it catches fire while on the vessel which sets fire to the whole ship"? he said: "well I can fix it until you return". So I had my car done when I returned and of course no problem.

Well, all I can say is we have our second KIA at the dealership over the last 1.5 years for engine replacements. My Stinger only had 2k miles when it started to fall apart due to poor engineering. The Sorento has barely over 50k and the six cylinder engine is expected to be at the dealership for three to four months. Why? To get them to enforce their own warranty, they do everything possible not to sign off on the replacement engines.

Unless this is a secondary recall for the same potential fault, we had this repair done years ago on our ‘07 G.C. It didn’t matter that the car was old or that we were not the original owners - we were contacted several times advising of the recall. Quite painless really, That car was sold at 340000km, which is on par with the Camry I owned prior, and we are now on our second high mileage GC (bug free version) which is going strong, so they are in my opinion, underrated cars and I’m glad we didn’t settle for the Chrysler G.V. as the family bus! I wonder if said plaintiff was notified of any recalls prior to alleged inferno….

I feel it’s time to return to the past with a separate garage for ones vehicles. My boss in the 1980’s was backing in a commercial Volkswagen T series van, when the engine cut out and would not restart, he suddenly realised that there was an engine fire and being a cargo van he couldn’t get out the back doors because of the cargo barrier and couldn’t get out the drivers door or passenger door because it was in the doorway of the workshop. He screamed out at my workmate who is the only one there at the time to push the van out of the building! But instead the workmate run down the road to the fire station. After a few minutes of frantic kicking, my boss got the cargo barrier out of the way and got out the back door and push the van out out onto the Courtyard. There was able to remove the engine cover and put the fire out just as the fire engine arrived. The fire was caused because of a fault fuel hose spigot! Manufactured incorrectly and would fall out of the carburettor causing fuel to go everywhere. He fitted the updated carburettor assembly and sold the van

I just got an interim recall notice for my 2016 Lexus Coupe due to the fuel tank vent tube assembly that may crack and leak fuel due to a defect in design. It’s only an interim notice as they haven’t even manufactured the replacement parts as yet lol. I’ve had zero issues with the vehicle in the 5 1/2 years I’ve owned it so I wasn’t expecting one after this amount of time. I do like the level of protection in Australia though and at least Lexus notified me in writing too instead of me having to look up a vin code on a Website that I have seen some manufacturers do.

My wife had a Hyundai Santa Fe, which she loved. Two episodes lead me to lose trust in this vehicle. I replaced it with a used Lexus NX300, which is a spectacular success. First episode was pulling out onto a very busy Sydney road, with a very good margin of safety. As I straightened up, the car lost power, and virtually stalled. The semi looming in my rear vision mirror hit the brakes, while I desperately tried to get the power back. After an eternity, power was restored, and I accelerated out of harms way. With only 25K on the clock, this was surprising and disappointing. We took it to service under warranty, and told it was normal, nothing to do except to always start in sports mode, which was irritating as the motor sounds like a sewing machine. Next issue was that the Lane Keeping Assist suddenly tugged the steering wheel to the right, shoving me into the oncoming traffic. The service centre said nothing could be done, but suggested to my wife that she buy a new black box for about 5K. I spoke the service manager, who undertook to realign the LKA cameras. I have no time for class actions, now admittedly I've not been in a position where I would join one but, they just smack of ambulance chasing lawyers as far as I'm concerned. I'd be very interested in what is the "typical" payouts for the litigants are, as opposed to what the legal firm makes in a successful case. I'd hazard a guess as to who the real winners would be though. As for the insurance company involved in the case you mentioned, I'd guess their legal department suggested that the cost involved in reclaiming their outlay, even if it was a lay-down mazaire, way acceded the actual outlay, and wasn't worth pursuing. Risk Management 101. While I did very much enjoy the video, I have to say that, that is some of the best "Tap Dancing" I have ever seen there John, well done! Fred Astaire would be proud...

Hyundai and KIA were once brilliant for actioning warranty claims and entrusted the dealership to make decisions on most repairs except paint, engine and transmissions. Even with those repairs requiring a pre-aproval this was done extremely quickly sometimes within hours and never more than a few days. Warranty records and parts were audited from time to time to ensure the dealers were complying with requirements but as money gets tighter and the customer base grows to the point that their cars are no longer second choices and are now main strem and popular customer care drops off a cliff. I'm sure you get great warranty service from the Chinese brands as they try to gain acceptance in the market.

In the United States, a large proportion of the cost of a motorcycle helmet used to be for litigation. Bell was the dominant brand at the time, and they got tired of legal defence being one of the biggest numbers on their legers. So they decided to fight back. They chose the most egregious money grabs on the books at the time, and instead of constantly settling out of court, they took those cases all the way, going after the licenses of the ambulance chasers who pressed the most absurd filings. My favourite was a rider whose helmet supposedly came off during a an accident. He had no serious head injuries. Investigators couldn’t find a helmet at the scene, the rider couldn’t remember when he bought a helmet, produce any evidence that anyone had ever seen him wearing one, or prove that the missing lid was a Bell. His testimony was brief: “I always buy the best, so it must have been a Bell”. The rider didn’t get a penny, his lawyer was disbarred, and the process was repeated with a bunch of other cases. After that, Bell stopped being sued, Bell’s legal department shrunk sharply, and the price of their helmets was reduced accordingly.

Not similar at all imo the Takata saga announcements and impact occurred pretty much at the same time across the globe the fix took longer geographically because of the tens of millions of units that had to be made as replacements so global supply created the delays in places. The other side of the coin is the lackadaisical approach of some owners proven again now that supply is available by reports of many vehicles still running around with faulty airbags years after the first stage of the problem.

Every now again people ask my input on things they should teach their children when learning to drive. That thing about what happens when your engine conks out is one of the things I tell them they should teach their kids. What I get a car that is still running but say a belt is off or broken and the power steering does not work, an amazing number of people say to me the car has no steering. When I get a car that does not run at all but still steers and rolls and amazing number of people say to me the car has absolutely no brakes. When I have people want me to unload a car from my tilt tray into a driveway at a perpendicular angle to a narrow street. I will quite often roll the car down the tray and roll it into their driveway. This is a matter of amazement to so many people, " oh we did not realise you can still drive it into our driveway like that". Like gravity is something they have never heard of.

Ref: @15:48 - Golden advice, no software needed for that! Interchangeable with what a driving instructor relayed to me in a lesson in 1986, in the thick of a hail shower in the Adelaide Hills back roads. "as you drive, examine the road, the corner, the side of the road, the intersection etc. Play a game of what could go wrong here and what would I do to avoid or survive a situation that was out of my control”. It’s things like remembering the gap between the trees on the outside of a familiar tight corner so that you have a soft landing when an oncoming idiot runs wide forcing a choice of head-on, or bush bashing. Or maybe its knowing that at a particular spot you can’t swerve anywhere because there’s a ditch that will flip you. How would you handle or avoid a head-on then? Always have a plan so that you control the situation that you hope never comes. As a motorcycle licencing instructor, I relayed same to my students. As a high milage driver of cars, motorcycles & large trucks, experiencing the actions of others and occasionally my own, I’m certain that adopting this mindset has saved me and others large amounts pain, grief and cost.

I hear where you are coming from as to the slime that is the class action market however in some cases where there is smoke there is fire. From my experience as a highly experienced automotive professional there is a wide swath of Hyundai Kia cars that are affected with durability problems that in my opinion it would be difficult for corporate leadership not to know about. Turning over a new leaf is a great gesture and I am highly encouraged by this, however it does not absolve previous sin. Just like most other multinationals Hyundai will likely ruthlessly minimize financial liability for current issues unless forced by the courts, dumping the problem in the lap of the consumer.

JC, a number of years past, My company was engaged in manufacturing a specialist piece of "kit" to be used by a segment of the vehicle (for hire) market place, it of course had to meet all of the "Design rules for Automobiles" in addition to 3 folders of Government BS, a section of which said the device must survive a Vehicle Fire. Try as I might (& believe me I did try - endlessly) to get a definition of a vehicle fire IE it's duration, the upper & lower temperatures etc, BUT NO-ONE in any Australian State or ay ANY University had a definition of what/how long/Temperature coefficients a vehicle fire constituted. Eventually I found a document from Sweden (I think, I'm older now & don't precisely remember the sources locality) where a manufacturer of steel framed multi story parking garages, put a dozen vehicles with 5 litres of fuel (petrol) in the front passenger footwell and set the cars alight to determine the duration & temperature of a range of vehicles in order to determine the point at which their steel frames became "plastic" IE they wouldn't hold a load of either the concrete or the vehicle. This document VERY closely monitored temperature and duration of all the vehicles (& if you need to know the highest temperature was 1367°C which was only achieved for 8 minutes prior to the vehicle beginning to rapidly cool (of course nothing was left of the vehicle after that exposure)). That document became the defacto terminal temperature a vehicle would sustain in a fire so we designed (by extensive research) a fire proof container that the memory could withstand and tested in a lab a significant number of times with the result that we were able to recover ALL of the images continuously by removing the "fire proof" component of the device and handling the images/voice/gps in a secondary device built for that purpose. Our competitors couldn't or were too lazy to find the document and attached their system to the underbody of the vehicle with nylon bolts, they promptly melted of course, unfortunately the device then swung by it's cables into the direct path of the LPG relief valve and if the "seals" hadn't already failed and the module was filled with road splashed water it of course become far too hot for the soldered components on the internal pcb to survive. And No we didn't win the contract, but then again we didn't have a part owner of the other system on the board that made the decision on which system to purchase despite it being vastly inferior in every respect from price to support to image quantity and quality, which only goes to show it's not what you present it's who you know.

I took down a bunch of videos (several dozen) that were no longer performing, a couple of years ago. Holden was no longer operating here, and I don't really want to field used Cruze enquiries from punters, because my business only focusses on buying new cars, and talking to disgruntled Cruze owners is a waste of my time.
