Hyundai Keeps Denying Warranty Claims - NOT GOOD!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
After my first Hyundai Dealership Service experience, hearing about the poor kid in California with the exhaust that's too loud, the recent DCT recall by Hyundai, and now a moderator on The Elantra N Owners Group of North America, who happens to be a Hyundai Technician, was denied an engine and turbo replacement under warranty, I felt compelled to make this video. I sure hope these are just a few isolated issues and not becoming the norm, but we'll see.

It's called small claims court and will cost somewhere around $50.00 to file against the company. They have to be represented by a attorney licensed in that state while you can appear yourself. These companies will settle before it goes to court because hiring a local lawyer is expensive. I haven't done this often but the three times I have it was settled before the court date. You have to wonder if the mechanic is telling the truth about talking to a lawyer buddy. If he did his lawyer buddy wasn't much of a lawyer.

Why are you having warranty issues also?
Like 4 years ago my cousin bought a new Sonata the The engine blew out he is a heavy duty mechanic was pissed . He said he bought the cars due to the warranty. After fighting with back and forth for a few weeks they fixed the car. He paid a large part of the balance to the bank and sold the to carmax . He drives a Acura now . Good luck out there everyone !
In regards to the exhaust guy, that's an easy win for him if he fights it. They conducted the testing completely wrong (tested in N mode and measured the decibel peaks from the crackles - they're supposed to measure the sound in the default mode at a steady RPM). The DCT recalls and warranty issues are scaring me - and I am currently in the process of waiting for an allotment to come it. The 10/100 warranty and DCT trans were the biggest selling points for me - and both of those seem to be a big problem. Not good.

I agree it should be easy for the Cali guy to get it cleared, but you know how red tape is especially when it comes to the state and emissions. From what I understand they refuse to retest it until Hyundai says they fixed the problem, but they won’t because it’s stock. Vicious circle. And I completely agree on the warranty and DCT being the biggest selling points. I too would list those as mine. I’m really hoping they follow through with any warranty issues any of us have. If the ecm has recorded 8300 rpm, the engine was at 8300 rpm. Sounds to me like this guy probably flashed his system to tune it, messed things up and attempted to revert to original. Once he realized evidence of his fuckery was found he tried to blame the trans issue. Claimed the car was stalling so he gased it more. Makes sense, however as a former and still certified Hyundai tech. If you are tuning the car you are remapping the entire ecu. If you revert it back to stock it’s not going to remember anything from the former tune since you’ve erased it and reverted it back to factory. Maybe it has a failsafe or some sort of memory feature in there I don’t know I left Hyundai when the N line started for this reason. High performance cars with an endless warranty… What could go wrong? Between the ever dropping labor times for warranty repair and the ever increasing complexity of the cars coupled with poor corporate support for the dealership I just jumped ship. I’ve been with Nissan for almost a year now. They have their own issues but offer much better support and tools from a corporate level and reasonable labor times for warranty repair. How about the GDI motors all exploding and not being covered under warranty until the government stepped in and made Hyundai and Kia honor all the thousands and thousands of people who they denied engine replacements to and even the current owners. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles affected with hundreds of thousands of people denied warranty claims and made to foot the bill themselves for a new engine on a car under warranty. They have been doing this for years and Hyundai tells the dealerships not to honor warranty claims. It's a known fact. And you do know that every Kia vehicle uses a Hyundai made motor and transmission.
It has been my experience that Hyundai will only do the bare minimum to repair your car. I have a 2010 Genesis Coupe Track Spec and the transmission quit, they replaced it twice with a used transmission and so far so good! I asked why they didn’t replace with a new transmission and they said it was their option to choose! This was done at Holler Hyundai in Winter Park Fl. It has been my experience that product quality is low, especially regarding interior trim but overall quality is low! I also have a 2013 Sonata with the 2.4 Ltr Theta engine that blows up due to poor engine quality in the manufacturing process as well as the fuel tube potential fire hazard recall going on the second recall because they realized the first bandaid recall was insufficient! Again showing they only want to do the very minimum! Now I am told that BlueLink will cease to function next month because they are unwilling to update the cellular telematics hardware from 2G to 4G ! This was a selling feature and by not updating the hardware my vehicle Will immediately lose value! I think another class action lawsuit needs to be brought! Bottom line do not buy Hyundai as they don’t stand behind their poor quality cheaply made products!

Not pointing fingers at all because I don't know the story. I just know what I learned from watching your video and all the other videos, and stories that have been shared about this so far. I've read a few things saying that he had modifications on the car and had pictures posted wherever, prior to this happening. Then they suddenly disappeared. I'm on my third Hyundai product - 21 Sonata N Line now. Just turned 28K today. I also worked in the auto repair industry for nearly 30 years. I retired early. So I most definitely know when my chain is getting yanked lol. Anything other than an oil change, I've been given a loaner. I dropped it off midday Wednesday for a scheduled appointment to correct a random GPS issue and for my in-between oil change. My two jugs of Mobil 1 were on the passenger side floor. She gave me a 2023 Santa Fe with 15 miles as my loner. Called me Friday morning around 9:30 to tell me it was done. My service advisor is great. With my previous one I had an issue with the HVAC control head that started occurring under warranty then miraculously stopped for over 10,000 miles. They replaced it at no charge when it happened outside of the bumper bumper. They also replaced the combination switch well outside the bumper to bumper at no charge. One thing I will definitely agree with you on is the oil viscosity issue. My owner's manual says nothing but 0W30, yet Hyundai is allowing them to put in 0W20 synthetic. It's not like the 2.5T is only in one vehicle. They should be requiring the dealers to stock 0W30 synthetic rather than just use 0W20 because it's what they have. I've been bringing 0W30 synthetic to them for all of my services. The free ones as well as the ones I have been doing in between. They have not had a problem with it.

Yes I’m planning on making a follow up video about that story since I now believe he was not being honest. I called him out for it and he just didn’t reply. To me that confirms my suspicions.
I own a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe and have received a recall notice a while back but can't find any more information as to is it safe to drive, or if the vehicle goes into this shut down mode and only gives you 20 to 30 seconds to pull over safely, would it restart or would it have to be towed.
@n-power-automotive
Жыл бұрын
I think the majority of people who get the recall notice on the DCT are still driving their cars, they’re just waiting for the notice of a fix to bring to car in. As far as what happens, I believe the car will go into limp mode which means you can drive it for a short amount of time at a very low speed. If that happens, the best action to take would be to have the car towed whether it restarts or not.
Sadly this is nothing new. I bought a brand new Hyundai Genesis Coupe several years ago, and within 1200 miles I took it in to get several issues addressed. A very loud rattle under acceleration behind the dash near the tachometer and some paint defects that were getting worse were the biggest issues (there were a few more). Hyundai tech drove and car and told me there was nothing wrong, even when I had him ride with me and the rattle was clear as day. For the peeling paint they submitted it to Corporate who denied the warranty claim claiming "normal wear and tear". This was on a 2 month old car and 1200 miles. At 3K miles I took it in for an oil change and they overfilled the oil on the car, this was after waiting hours for an oil change. After I determined it was overfilled, they made me wait 3 hours to address it. That was it for me. I sold the car a few months later and lost money but have never looked back. Just this year I was thinking about a Kia Sorento for my teenage kids and read a ton of complaints about the transmission and people waiting 3-6 months for parts. Bought a Honda for them instead. It's really too bad because, on paper, Hyundai/Kia offer very nice products with good tech and features, but a warranty is of zero use if company does not stand by it. If you read the forums there have been constant issues with the DCT's, making someone pay for a new engine is wrong. Making your own service tech pay for it is even more wrong. Shame on Hyundai.

I don’t blame you for not trusting Kia/Hyundai anymore. If I had an experience like that I would probably never go back either. This is not just a problem with Hyundai, it's a problem with a huge number of manufacturers. From my 16 years experience of VW Group cars in the UK they are worse and are certainly not reliable. Every VW/Audi that I have owned has had a major fault costing thousands of £'s to repair, VW will wriggle at best, usually come up with a good will gesture for things that are obviously warranty. I have now taken delivery of my first KIA, we'll see if any claim process is better, but really hoping that they are better screwed together and just wont break in the first place!

My warranty denial: I have a 2021 Hyundai Sonata SEL that I really like for the most part. I’m a full time Uber & Lyft driver & got this after someone totaled my 2018 Sonata Sport. At about 5,000 miles, I noticed a hole wearing thru the driver’s carpeted mat where my heel rests. I mentioned this to the Hyundai service advisor & he swapped in a new set of mats. It happened again at just under 10,000 miles & this time, the hole went thru the carpeting underneath the mat, exposing the insulation material underneath. I go back to the dealership & tell the same service advisor & this time, he said he’d have to check with his warranty rep for Hyundai. When I followed up, he said the warranty rep said ‘no’. I told them it was unreasonable for a carpet & mat to not hold up for 5,000 or 10,000 miles. He just shrugged his shoulders. A cousin who works at the dealership let me use his discount to get Sonata branded all weather floor liners which still costed me $150. I think there’s a design flaw where the insulation is too thick, making it easier for a pressure point to wear into the carpet.

maybe it's possible to capture data from a trans control unit? The only way the motor could mechanically spin over 8k would be if it was forced to do so by a malfunctioning trans. As noted, the ECU limiter would keep revs down in normal circumstances...otherwise....it would have to be downshifted suddenly into far too low a gear. This would be impossible in a properly functioning and safeguarded DCT, while also being probably a rather hilarious daily occurrence nationwide in a lot of manual transmissions vehicles of all shapes and sizes lol. Simple question back to Hyundai warranty-- as a DCT, how did it rev past 8k without having a malfunction that allowed that to occur? We know a properly functioning DCT, even in manual mode, will NOT allow the downshift and resulting engine catastrophic engine speed to occur. The shift would only be "accepted" by the system if engine speed would result in the proper range. The absolute only way this could be an owner responsibility would be with a manual transmission. How on earth could you argue otherwise?????

My 91 Excel had oil consumption problems I got rid of it at 90,000. My 2000 Sonata had rear bearings and catalytic convertor problems but covered under warranty. 2013 Elantra GT had total engine replacement recall due to metal shavings in the 1.8 engine. My 2019 Sonata started showing signs of carbon build up but was running fine. They were reported to have oil consumption problems and car thief problems due to not having engine immobilizers. Hyundai should pay for a lawyer to fight the exhaust case in court. Any cop in any jurisdiction can say a stock exhaust is illegal. It is not hyundai's fault in this case. They should fight it and win one time to set the precedent that local cops cannot override approval by the state and us govt.

I don't see the point in modding the EN. It's FWD so ~300HP is all you would need. The car has been touted to be balanced and already ready for track use. It already sounds good so an exhaust is not needed. Rev Hang isn't an issue in the manuals so you don't need to tune it. I'm getting a 2023 one next month, and I'm going to drive the hell out of it and not mod anything and enjoy the warranty without giving them an excuse to deny me.

Hyundai dealership service managers are told by Hyundai to deny warranty claims. Been doing it for over 15yrs. They count on people getting mad and leaving as lawyer and court costs are additional money owners would have to pay. That is why Hyundai and Kia have so called 100k mile warranty. To attract suckers. They tell women they had oil changed at a garage other than dealer their warranty is voided. Tell men who change own oil warranty is voided. He never showed official responses from Hyundai, did he?
What he experienced falls directly in line with a bad tune. Where’s the official responses in writing from Hyundai he got with the denial and the reason? Smells fishy.
The Hyundai tech modified the ecu and put other things on the car, which is why he was denied. He also purchased another EN after all was said and done...
I expect to take my car to the dealer for a service once a year. Apart from a puncture anything that needs doing is the car’s fault. I’ve had my current Suzuki for nearly six years with zero faults of any kind and I expect the replacement Honda to give me identical service. We shall see.
Years ago when Hyundai/KIA introduced it's 10/100,000 warranty they did it to help overcome the bad reputation for reliability and durability their models in the early years of selling in the US market had acquired. It became a major selling point for them and I'm sure they wish they could get rid of it. Without the warranty what is the compelling reason to buy them over a competing brand? They're not really that much less expensive to purchase and in the long run they are more expensive because of their poor resale value. They also make the least profit per unit of any of the major automakers, only around $700, so I'm sure they will do anything possible to deny an expensive warranty claim.
The first issue imo is not on Hyundai to document a 'fake' fix help the customer fool the state inspector. This guy screwed himself by happily putting the car into it's loudest mode for the inspector to begin with. Hyundai gave him proof the car is stock, whatcelse can they do? He's in court, the right place to sort this out. The second issue, many have posted this guy is all over FB with the mods he's done to the car, likely voiding his own warranty. *Hyundai has their issues no doubt* and lots of them, but these cases, ehhhh

It'd got nothing about brand loyalty, and everything to do with good, reliable engineering. The reason people avoid the Elantra N (and other Hyundai/Kia products), is because they continue to use the Theta II engine. It's NOT a great engine. Even if it won't blow up right away, it generally won't last past 100-150K miles. The design flaws are in the oiling system and certain production issues with the piston/rings/cylinder clearances. At some point it either will brun through enough oil, or just have the oil starvation issues where either you'll end up with piston slap issues, or the main crank bearings getting chewed up. The latter will destroy the engine or seize it right up. The former will also destroy parts of the engine, just might take a bit longer with a lot more noise. Not saying you can't get lucky if you baby it, and make it last. But is that something you're interested in doing, and investing money in? I'd rather get a Type-R, or the Carolla GR, or a Golf R. The K20C1, G16E-GTS, and the EA888 engines in those are nearly bulletproof, will take more power, and will last reliably for a very long time. I test drove the Elantra N, and I would love to be able to get it, its a great drivers car. The suspension, steering, engine, DCT, brakes and interior are really nice and fun to drive, and easy to live with. However knowing the potential disaster lying in wait, like an IED under your toilet seat, is just not worth the money/time investment and rear end pucker factor.
I guess I'm not buying an N. I was really looking forward to tracking one.

If the Hyundai tech ECU logs noted a turbo over-rev it was in-fact an over-rev at 8350 rpm. This means it was a manual transmission and he made a money shift. He shifted down to a lower gear @ WOT, instead of shifting up to another gear. Can’t happen with a DCT, bit can with a MT. It’s happened quite a few times before and cost owners a new long block. Think of the old Hyundai XL and Accent.. back in 2000s they used to run you 12-15 grand.. surely you don’t expect them to be “performance “ brand only a short few years later… Kia-Hyundai are now pumping out some “serious “ models and charging serious money for them, which in my opinion won’t fly.. imagine re selling a 10 year old Kia stinger or something.. Anyway, point of the story, these are good for 3-5 years if driven gently and that’s it…
Scotty Kilmer and Car Wizard says stay from the dealer and Koren junk. Make GM look like Honda LOL
This seems to be a US problem. Over the years Hyundai in the US just has all the problems in the world with their builds. It has been world known for decades that American-made cars suffer from poor workmanship and reliability. In the 60s when Australia bought the XL falcon out to sell, it only lasted like 1 month before the ball joints fell apart, and the tie rods broke. They had to completely remanufacture the items in Australia to get quality. This is why, when other countries take American brands they often get the licence to make them themselves as a subsidiary of either GM or Ford. Hyundai from Korea doesn't suffer a tenth of the problems of the US build, using the same machinery, just different labour and materials.

You said, "The car is completely stock, or so he says..." . Yeah, right. There's more to this than anybody is saying here. Why is it every video on Hyundai's poor warranty performance it always mentions this guy and that poor bastard in California who's only screw up was living in California? How many other claims has Hyundai denied? I've heard the reports of questionable dealer service. That's true with any manufacturer. I change my own oil in my DCT. Even though you can't find Shell or Quaker State 0w-30 oil anywhere near me, I use Mobile-1 0w-30 and I buy my filters from the Hyundai dealer. (even though they had difficulty identifying the correct filter - 26300-35505) I even videotape me doing the change just in case there's ever any question. Hyundai will NOT warrant any modifications to the engine, engine control computer or transmission, neither will any other automobile manufacturer. Are you surprised? I was told there were no restrictions regarding race track use. My N has been to Watkins Glen and Lime Rock Park. Limited (proper) track use has no effect on the Elantra N, in fact, she seems happier on the track than on the street. It's what she was built for. Maybe these people are not the mechanics (or drivers) they think they are. Maybe Hyundai knows when they're being scammed.
