Hyundai IONIQ 5 In-Depth Review 2022 - Should Tesla Be Worried?!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 FROM OSV: bit.ly/33h5bq4
Having shaken up the market with its very first IONIQ, Hyundai does so again with this far more sophisticated IONIQ 5. This time round, the IONIQ is only an EV - and it's quite an arresting one, aimed at premium compact hatch and Crossover models typified by cars like Volkswagen's ID.4, Ford's Mustang MACH-E, the Polestar2 and this Hyundai's close cousin, the Kia EV6. You have to offer something interesting and different in that kind of company. The IONIQ 5 very definitely does.

Background
Exactly what has the EV automotive sector been lacking - apart from extended battery range? Here's my nomination: design character. Most family EVs are about as interesting to look at or sit in as a wet day at Brighton Beach: in lockdown. But this one, Hyundai's IONIQ 5, isn't.
The name might ring a bell. The first IONIQ model was the first car to be available in hybrid, electric and plug-in forms - a Prius rival that went further. And this one aims to go further still, the founding member of Hyundai's new IONIQ EV sub-brand, a line-up that'll subsequently be bolstered by the IONIQ 6 (a mid-sized saloon) and the IONIQ 7 (a large SUV). This IONIQ 5 is less easy to pigeonhole, not least because of its arresting looks, penned by Luc Donckerwolke, the man behind who styled most modern era Lamborghinis. Larger than its predecessor, it's a family hatch with aggressive SUV overtones. And it makes a statement.
Driving Experience
The IONIQ 5 sits on the all-new E-GMP platform that Hyundai has created for its future EVs. As usual with an EV of this size, there's a choice of battery pack sizes and rear-driven electric outputs, with a token AWD model at the top of the range. The base 58kWh battery model has a single electric motor on the rear axle with 168bhp and 350Nm of torque. That delivers 240 miles of driving range and gets to 62mph in 8.5s. Step up to the 73kWh battery version and the rear motor gets a boost in power to 215bhp, range increases to 300 miles and the 0-62mph sprint time improves to 7.4s. The top 73kWh AWD model adds an extra motor on the front axle, which boosts output to 301bhp and ups torque to 605Nm, slashing the 62mph sprint time to just 5.2s, though the drive range figure falls to 287 miles.
On the move, drive dynamics are centred upon comfort; to that end, the brand has engineered the mass market's very first integrated drive axle, which combines the driveshafts and wheel bearings, benefitting comfort and handling stability. There's a 'Sport' driving mode button hanging from the steering wheel for those times you want to push on a bit, on the opposite side to the phallic-shaped gear selector. SUV-specific Michelin Pilot sport 4 tyres promise decent traction and the slippery shape aids cruising refinement.
Design and Build
How to start in describing the way the IONIQ 5 looks? Perhaps with its aggressive clamshell nose section that'll have drivers squinting in the rear view mirrors at the fabulous 8-bit LED matrix lights with their 256 cubic pixels. Then there's the 'Zorro'-style profile panel slashes, the forward-leaning C-pillars, the flush door handles and the neat spoiler that's actually a wing with airflow slots. Ex-Lamborghini designer Luc Donckerwolke has even allowed for a solar panel roof which powers the car's ancillary electrical systems and can sometimes energise the battery too. Style-wise, this could be either a Crossover or a high riding hatch, depending on your perspective. And EV size-wise, it's a Volkswagen ID.4 rival, larger than a Nissan LEAF (this IONIQ is 4,735mm in length), but smaller than, say, a Mercedes EQC.

    I'd never dreamt of looking at a Hyundai before and yet sold my Tesla Model 3, because of it's uncomfortable fidgetty ride, and replaced it with this Ioniq 5 (which after waiting three months was actually delivered four weeks early). Your review, as always, is accurate and spot-on. A breath of fresh air indeed from Hyundai. Thanks for a great, quality review.

    I have both the Tesla Model Y for 10 months, and this Ioniq 5 for 2 months. Model Y is slightly more spacious with more headroom, but the squeaking and rattling is super annoying and makes the car feels super cheap. Ioniq 5, however, feels like it's better built. What I don't like about Tesla is that the screen, although huge, is in the center, and that's the only screen. There's no odometer in front of the steering. Ioniq 5's screens are a lot smaller, but more strategically located. Ioniq 5 is the overall winner. Might sell the Model Y if I get a good price for it.

    My only 'concern' with this level of EV, is the width and the poor turning circle, which makes parking generally difficult in public car parks. IONIQ 5 = 1890 wide (2152mm with mirrors). Turning circle 11.98metres!!

    Excellent review! You covered it comprehensively and very accurately, I might add. Very minor points which may only apply here in North America: Android Auto | Apple Carplay by USB port only. The middle port that is always powered, even when the car is off. Under seat V2L available even when the car is off by turning on Utility Mode in the menu. This is for camping, tailgate parties and the like. Approaching the car from the back with key fob will open the 'boot' and from the side will unlock the four doors. May well be that the central airbag is in the universal console.

    An absolute fantastic car. Quite a well balanced review. I found the ID.5 the most comfortable EV, the Megane E-tech was excellent. But I plumped for the I5 and it is a spaceship. The only problem I have, its a barge. It is a big wide car, and still learning how to park it on my drive. Like most SUV crossovers, you cannot see the sides in relation to the road. Judging width and position takes time. But it is the most comfortable and technologically advanced car I have driven, it essentially drives itself on the motorway.

    I think the Hyundai Ioniq and KIA EV6 are a breathe of fresh air when in comes to styling and designing an EV. I think they both look good. Teslas look a bit bland and have questionable quality, whereas Volkswagen's ID range looks plain weird. I still believe that electric cars are for the rich or better off and no car company as yet has addressed the issue of moving the average person in the street out of fossil fuel cars to electric. (You cannot count the Dacia Spring due to its questionable safety and exposed electric cables beneath the vehicle or MG's efforts as they are still too pricey.)Very good review as always thanks!

    Tesla quality has improved a lot over the years, especially the ones coming from Shanghai. I do experience some slight rattles in the Ioniq 5, and they left out the automatic handles in Holland. Cheaper EVs will come soon, especially from China, like the Ora Cat or BYD Dolphin and Yuan+. But even now, total cost of ownership of EVs is already lower. I'm helping my retired dad look for a car to replace his old Xsara Picasso, and it is shocking how expensive the fossil cars have become. Yes, a fossil Tiguan may start a bit cheaper, but with some options quickly gets into the higher ID.4 / Ioniq 5 price range. And then you have the current fuel prices, and maintenance to deal with. I'm driving the top trim RWD Ioniq 5, and it's costing me only about €100 more per month than the old 2013 Renault Megane Estate I drove before. But that's comparing the top trim new EV with an almost 9 year old second hander that had half the sticker price of the Ioniq 5...

  • @bondjamesbond9041

    @bondjamesbond9041

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@bilgyno1 I stand by what I said about EVs being too expensive. Cheapest EV in the UK is about £25k but the range will be poor. The average person cannot afford this kind of money plus they would be concerned about taking it on a long journey due to range anxiety and the dire situation regarding charging points. Tesla are still poor value when you take into account the high price and average fit and finish.

  • @timaustin2000

    @@bondjamesbond9041 I respectfully disagree. 90% of UK buyers buy on PCP or Lease finance which measure monthly repayments by depreciation not up front cost. As such, EVs are more competitive vs. "regular" cars on a monthly basis. Get a £27k MG5 and it'll cost you a monthly around the same price as a Tiguan. But with significantly lower running costs.

  • @bondjamesbond9041

    @bondjamesbond9041

    @@timaustin2000 Ordinary people cannot afford the PCP repayments on an MG5 along with their expensive rents/mortages. They can barely run an 8 year old Focus. Think you are misunderstanding my point. £27k for an MG5 is still a huge sum for many people and this vehicle does not have a big range. It is not a reliable vehicle coming 22nd out of 31 manufacturers in the What car customer survey.

    Can't believe this title: "Should Tesla be worried"!!! I've drive the Ioniq 5, Kia EV 6, Tetsla Y and Genesis GV 60. They are all REALLY nice in their own ways. The Genesis of course is the most luxurious. The Kia seemed to be the most fun. The Tesla Y was also very nice. Surprisingly I liked the Ioniq the best. BUT... The Tesla range is better than the Ioniq Limited. The Tesla price is $8,000 better. The Tesla Supercharging network is better. So there's REALLY NOT COMPARISON. Tesla wins. And YES I'm a serious buyer but can't see getting the Ioniq at this point.

Give me a proper petrol engine any day of the week but I know we are moving towards electric so it’s something I have to live with. But I couldn’t live with this. It’s horrible. It looks like a new take on a 1980s Austin Maestro and that was never a good looking car. Plus it’s huge. I’ve seen a couple of them on the road and they are massive when compared to a Golf or a Focus. If I’m honest the only EV I would part money for is the polestar 2. If I’ve got to look at it on my driveway for a few years I,m at least going to buy one I like the look of.
