One of the things that makes this car so much fun is the engine.
It’s a 2 liter turbo 4 banger which doesn’t sound interesting on the surface, but it makes 276hp and 289lbft
It feels really strong at the low end and pulls cleanly all the way up
But the best thing is the valved exhaust that we’ll talk more about on the exterior
Something like a GTI/GLI has 35 less hp, an Si has 76 less so you’re actually closer to things like Type Rs and Golf Rs
One of the nice things here too is you get a really solid manual transmission
The shifter is a nice classic ball shape
The throws are short and precise
The pedalbox is perfect for heel toe
BUT if you didn’t want to bother with that, there’s a big red button on your steering wheel that will turn on rev matching..which is fantastic and up in N mode you get pops and bangs on every shift and when you come off throttle
Now, there is a way to get more power, if you go for the Dual clutch that red button on the steering wheel turns into an NGS button which puts the car in overboost and adds another 10 hp for a couple seconds…personally I’ll still keep the stick
Then we get to the diff
This is a FWD car and what you get here is Hyindai’s “corner carving” e-LSD
Cool thing about an e_LSD is in your customizable drive modes you can adjust how the diff behaves
Overall, this diff does a really good job at keep the car feeling planted and not wasting power or torque spinning a wheel
This Elantra N likes to dive into a corner
That diff is great, but credit also goes to the Michelin PS4S tires. They’re super grippy and aggressive, but for winter swap them out. There’s really only one issue with the front end, and that’s torque steer. On throttle, especially around the off-camber corners at ATL motorsports park I did feel quite a bit of torque steer, which is something you don’t get from the Type R. At dinner after our track day in speaking with some other journalists they said they didn’t mind the torque steer and the type r steering is too video game-y so you’ll have to decide for yourself
That’s a good time to talk about dynamics then
Overallt the steering is great, nice weight, loads up nice and progressively, and I feel everything through the rack
But then we talk about the suspension and it’s an electronically controlled adaptive damper…again on a car that’s like 32k…incredible
Obviously in full N mode with the stiffest rebound I’m not gunna cruise on the highway like that
Softened back in normal or Eco mode this thing is actually super liveable
But this is the N car so it’s main goal is to be good at the limit and for this car they’ve upped the limit all the way down to the chassis, and that’s very apparent from the bright red scaffolding you get in the trunk to tighten up the rear end of the chassis
What it all comes together as is something that has a great split personality but also something that doesn’t skimp on the childish theatrics
HAving spent a full week with this thing it really has confirmed my suspicion that you really can get everything from this car. It has the right power. It makes the right noise. It’s got great dynamics, and all of that while ASLO being able to soften it back and get to work on Monday in a supple and quiet ride. So with that, let’s step outside and dive a little deeper
The seats are really bolstered (legs)
But they’re leather, alcantara, blue stitched, blue perforation detail, and have light up N logos
That’s very M3/4 and very cool
You can have any color interior as long as it’s black
Again no sunroof
But since this is the manual it doesn’t get NGS, it gets rev-matching
And you also get 2 N buttons on your wheel
Filled in one is N standard, there’s also N custom
If you hold the right N button on the wheel it’ll take you to the customize screen
Engine, steering, LSD, exhaust***
The exhaust can be set to sport, racecar, or TCR
Telemetry, temps, 0-60 logger, lap time tracker, and you can select circuit
You get wired ACP and AA
And weirdly you get quiet mode…i guess make sure you turn the exhaust down too
Wireless charger
Rear seats are the biggest in any N car, legroom wise
No map pockets, no air vents, no cupholders in the center
Cupholder in door bin
Then there’s the trunk which is a great size
And then you see the bracing, but don’t worry you can take that out with a couple screws

If I would go new R for 45k, I would keep going for an Audi RS3. The N is the knockoff R at a discount. That's why I own one. The dampers, good enough engine, lsd, grippy seats, variable exhaust and big brakes almost read like a checklist Hyundai made to be unique at this price and they left the rest of the crap that didn't matter behind like faux carbon fiber, 20" forged wheels, aluminum comtrol arms, fog lights, hood scoop and cup tires that don't add a lot except cost to the R.

I still prefer and love my Mk8 Golf R but I absolutely understand the importance this car has in the community. I’m so glad that other manufacturers are making fun, sporty cars in the 35-45k range. This makes others raise the bar and hopefully gives us some nice vehicles before EVs take over. It also makes it so there’s more choice and thus more uniqueness on the road. It’d be boring to see the same two cars everywhere. I’m really glad the EN exists and I’m excited to see what the GR Corolla brings to the table. That and the new CTR and we’ll have a vibrant tuner community. I guess the WRX too but… >.>.

My money is still on the Elantra N. I rather have the sedan than a hatchback. Now if Honda were to do a Type R sedan in the North American market like the Japanese market got with the DB8 Japanese-spec Integra Type R and the Japan-spec Civic Type R sedan that was based on the 8th gen Civic Si platform 3 car generations ago, I'd go Type R, but because I think I wouldn't look right in a hatchback, the Elantra N wins. I'd take the Elantra N in the Intense Blue and manual. Side note: The Canadian-spec Elantra N in Canada gets the sunroof with the manual. I'll never understand why automakers have to slap us in the face giving other markets more features than the U.S. and we get poverty-specs to certain enthusiast vehicles.

Great track car, but how is the Elantra N as a city commuter car? Out the door price for a dual wet clutch 8 speed transmission Elantra N is about $38000 (closer to $40k than $30k). It's too noisy and the car feels stiff (not supple). This might appeal to a young college graduate not encumbered by a lot of student debt. ;-) I priced the car insurance...it was high! I love the exterior design and color. Personally, I thought the 2022 Honda Civic Touring Hatch was a better buy.

@@frankhernandez4695 nah it is 10k more only if you get the manual and I would bet the manual is slower. A lot of the Elantra N performance lies on the fact that the Elantra N can be had on a DCT. Also the Hyundai dealership experience is absolutely trash. BMW may be more expensive but I the BMW is more reliable, way better dealership experience, and much better ride for a daily makes it a win. A FWD car has to sacrifice a lot in order to keep up with a RWD car in order t keep up with it at the race track and still be a great daily driver. Also an Elantra N, being FWD, will teach you bad driving habits that will not progress your driving skills into faster cars. Think long term buddy! You will eventually be able to afford faster cars and they won’t be FWD. the fastest cars are RWD and AWD.

@Western Liberal Ideology-leftNright-isHYPOCRITICAL Toyota could of used an engine from Lexus to put in the Supra but instead they chose BMWs B48 and B58 engine which has been highly praised for is durability and performance and is even highly praised in the tuner community as the return of the 2JZ. BMW are expensive to fix but they are not unreliable when you stay on top of service. Besides Hyundai DCT have been exploding and have had many poor installations and poor service when you visit a dealership. Hyundai has no room to talk about reliability. Even Toyota thinks they are reliable enough to deserve the Toyota badge.

the Wrx if you can get at 33 is the best all around car for under 35k. Elantra is a little much for everyday I’d rather have the awd for all season weather and the trunk In the Elantra cannot be used because of the extra brace

The rear brace can be easily removed. Some all season tires would be fine for the Elantra N as it has a limited slip front diff.

It’s really not that much, I dd it and it’s perfectly comfortable for a sporty car. N mode transforms the car for back roads so the dual personality is there.

Brace doesn’t affect cargo space by much unless you’re folding down the seat. In which case you can remove the brace with a few bolts. Or you can pass through long skinny items like skis or wood

If this thing didn’t look the way it did, I would get one in a heart beat, love the way it sounds. The front end looks like a pug with the black nose. The body lines at the side is too much, the rear end looks too square in a way.

I feel like the rear isn't that bad. I think if you get it in black the front doesn't make you gag anymore either. If I was in the market for a car right now I'd probably be looking at buying an EN.

@@antoinelee-thomas9536 I have seen a lot of comments on videos abouth this car saying "it's still a Hyundai" People used to say that about Honda for years and all of the sudden Honda is some legendary maker. A good car is a good car. Same people that shunned the SRT-4 or Cobalt SS and missed out on some great cars. This car reminds me of those two. Underdog, but never fully embraced.

The real challenge is finding an Elantra N for under 40k tho 🥲. Had to go with a Sonata N line cause the dealer told me the Elantra N’s were already sold @ almost 50k
