GT350 and Elantra N owner here. I bought the EN for my “fun” daily without driving or seeing one. The car really blew me away and continues to blow away my car friends that are used to 600hp+ cars. Extremely capable little car out of the box. Been waiting to hear Mark and Jack's take on this car because they were practically the only reviewers who didn't fall all over themselves anointing the Veloster N the King of the Hot Hatches. So if they say the Elantra N is legit, I believe them.

  • @PiroFyre
    @PiroFyre2 жыл бұрын

One thing to note while you guys were under the car was the front lower control arms. They now have bracing on them compared to the Veloster N that has none. Us VN guys have an aftermarket option to buy a set of braces to bolt on to our cars. Crazy because it feels like the engineers do follow what we're doing with our cars and seeing if they can improve upon it. Another thing VN guys complained about was the Pirelli PZ4 tires as the more driving enthusiasts guys bought PS4S and it was a much better tire. They legitimately listened to our complaints and now, Elantra N comes with PS4S! It's honestly crazy how they are observing and listening to the community on making the next gen product better. That's why the Elantra N is a much more impressive car than the Veloster N for Mark to drive on track.

Makes sense, a year into ownership of my E92 M3 6mt i basically came to the same conclusion; that the DCT was the move. Between the lightning fast shifts, shorter gearing + extra 7th gear it really put the car on another level the 6mt couldn’t compete on. Plus it wasnt like the manual transmission was super special or anything so not like it made it up with amazing feeling and engagement, it had really long gearing and long notchy throws just like a regular non M BMW, and was not well matched to the low torque peaky high rpm nature of the 4L V8 that needed to live in the top end to really make power.

53 year old sport compact enthusiast since 1983, Gti,WRX,ST,RS,Si, this is the most entertaining daily I have ever owned. Performance Blue 6-spd, figuring it could likely be the last new manual trans I may ever buy-- just couldn't let that go. It's notable that when you have previously put nearly 200k miles on two Fiesta ST dailies, this thing feels like a massive upgrade, with a relatively plush ride in "normal" modes...........Curiously the response to the appearance, especially the color has been overwhelmingly positive- I am sure I am not hearing from any haters, but it is undeniably a car the looks quite different in person. Personally I think it looks striking and performance focused, with sure, more than a little bit of juvenile "because racecar" theater--- that's ok- all this shit keeps me young-- I will take bold styling over some homogenized safe "german sports sedan knock-off" look anytime......... Also It's curious to see here how much "Ford's automotive or lack thereof business plan" paid off.😂One former Fist owner after another gone to the N....

How do you like it compared to the Fiesta ST in terms of fun? It's obviously much nicer inside, quieter, more comfortable, better tech etc. The Fiesta ST is an absolute riot to drive on a tight twisty back road though. How does the extra 400lbs of weight and longer wheelbase effect the fun to drive nature?

  • @zxmurph1

@@jjchockey All of the relatively "nice stuff" in the N does nothing to diminish any fun. Sure, the pure light, tossable nature of the Fist was fantastic, and its size makes me think about how fun an i20 N must be. That said, I think the Elantra strikes a good balance in having all the pure rowdiness I want, along with an unexpected but welcome level of refinement. So think of it as all of the fun of the ST, along with heaping levels more of both livability AND speed.

I’m kinda old and no stranger when it comes to sport compacts. My very first was a used, beat-to-shit 1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R. I’ve owned an Mk5 and MK7 VW GTI, as well an 8th-gen and 10th-gen Civic Si. Now the proud papa of an Elantra N with a stick, mercifully sold to me at sticker price by some good folks in Omaha. My God, this thing does everything in italics. From the fantastic seats to the quickness to the unbelievably fun and raucous exhaust while blasting down the road in N mode, it’s an all-around blast. The only time I’ve had more fun in a car was when I drove a Ferrari F430 on that track outside of Las Vegas. If I had to nitpick, I’d say some of the interior plastics are crap and the front end resembles a catfish. But really, all is forgotten when you get behind the wheel. I’ll be holding on to this car for dear life as we brace for our inevitable and silent electric future.

I think the perspective on the interior is all subjective. I went from a 10th generation Civic to the Elantra N, and at least for me I find Hyundai's layout and interior to make more sense. The widescreen display alone is light years beyond Honda, I had so much lag and crashing with the Civic infotainment. I have never, ever had an infotainment system so responsive and frankly so gorgeous. Apple Car Play, albeit wired, is amazing as well. I drive 110 miles a day for work, and the only thing I can ding the Elantra N on is the seat comfort, but that was a trade off I was willing to make because you are locked into that seat in turns and you are going nowhere. As far as cheap plastics go...every car I've ever had felt like it had areas with cheap plastics. There's enough alcantara to make up for some of the softer plastics, and to the people with complaints: it's a performance car, not a luxury vehicle. Cannot wait to eventually get this thing on the track.

From our experience, the Elantra N makes the most sense of any of the competition. The following is a breakdown of what we've found in our search for a small fun family car, for anyone interested: The Kona N is just a tad too small in the rear seat. We're a family of taller people and that extra leg room is paramount. Our local Honda dealer won't let us test drive a Civic Si until we haggle, which is just dumb if I'm not a kid and can legitimately easily afford one. The Civic Type R did not impress us - it felt loose in so many ways, which we did not expect - could have been that example I suppose. Also the new one's not in production until at least next year. The Golf R is unobtainium (dealers cannot get any more 2022 models at this point from what we were told) and has some bad infotainment stuff going on. The Focus RS is no longer a thing (and we already own one which we're keeping). The Chargers are a bit too big and interiors suck. The Germans don't have anything half as fun for twice as much money (with the same interior accommodations). Lexus doesn't contend until you tip over $70k USD. Acura has a less engaging driving experience across the board. The GR Corolla is yet to be released and will likely be plagued by super high demand. Tesla is double the cost for the engaging one and even then it only really competes with raw acceleration, which is kind of a one trick pony. Haven't driven the Stinger GT, but I can't imagine it has more driver engagement (we intend to at some point). The awesome Blackwings are double the cost or more. Subaru discontinued the STi, and even then the last gen did not get us too excited (we have owned 3 Subarus and really like them, so it's not a brand bias - just think the STi lacks a sense of occasion). Alfas are more expensive, less fun (for the somewhat comparable base trims - the quad is insanely good but also insanely expensive), and less reliable. I'm sure I'm missing some of the competition, but I'm all tapped out thinking about it. In the end, if we can get our hands on an Elantra N for any sort of reasonable cost, we will jump at it. I've owned a lot of very fun cars and this one is right up there with the others in fun factor. Gobstoppingly good car. Oh, and as far as the suspension being harsh, we own the aforementioned RS which has redefined what compromised suspension for the street is to us. The Elantra N feels downright comfy in any mode.

@@VersanGetryx Truly my pleasure! I love cars and have had a blast driving them. Little update: We drove a VW Golf GTI which was like driving a pretty fun normal car. It was quick, so that's nice. It has the "DSG Farts" (the sales guy called them that) so that was better than nothing, but otherwise it was very basic sounding compared to the Focus RS and Elantra N. The shifts on the GTI were slower to react than the N. I expected it to be impressive to drive and I also expected to hate the infotainment. It was almost the opposite. The drive was OK and somewhat subdued (even in sport mode) and the infotainment was good. That said, the N has a slightly easier infotainment to navigate and has more customization for the drive modes. For $2000 more MSRP it really didn't blow us away like I thought it might. There's a rumor a Mk8 Golf R is on its way here and I can't wait to try that. We've cross shopped a lot of cars from $60k down, and the N is toward the top for fun you can have, especially given the price point. Same with the Focus RS. Most fun you can have south of $45k given minimal mods.

This car is literally 9-11k cheaper and does 95% of what a Civic Type R can do both on track and on street and on some courses tracks better.

This was such a helpful video. Everyone on YT has been praising this car and it just seemed too good to be true (as someone who is looking for a fast GT/comfy/family car, not a track car). Much more realistic perspective here, as always. Will be pivoting my search to something a little comfier for sure.

Final thoughts you forgot to mention overall GTI interior is nicer... but it still doesn't have buttons which the Elantra N has the perfect number of buttons which is super important to me. I would have bought a new GTI but the controls look like a nightmare.

I was cross shopping gti and this and got into fb group for that car. Group was riddled with bugs from infotainment hindering numerous key features for that car for so many folks. So those are not just inconvenient its super buggy. Major cost cutting

@@shrijanaryal4923 I've been hearing that. No excuse for that at all - just bad testing or inadequate development time by VW. It's a silly interior that has no advantages at all.

Yeah they might have been comparing it to Jack’s GTI which is an MK7. The interior of that car is pretty much perfect, it’s sad they just didn’t keep it similar.

I have the manual 2021 i30N hatch here in Australia and it’s amazingly fun to drive. I liken it to an MX5/Miata of hot hatches; there may be faster or more serious cars, but the N cars just find a perfect blend of performance and fun for the price point. I’m still surprised I enjoy my N more than other cars I’ve owned that most enthusiasts would put ahead of it such as an Evo X, Focus RS, STi and GR Yaris. It shouldn’t be this good, but it’s more than the sum of its parts.

It's more fun than your older cars because it's a newer car with all the newer tech that makes those older gen cars feel old.

@@Vision33r yeah but what’s great about it is that the N doesn’t let the newer tech bog it down and numb the driving experience. Rather, it amplifies it and still manages to make the drive engaging and mechanical.

@@Vision33r it’s only a couple of years newer than most of those cars so other than Apple CarPlay the tech is pretty similar. The reason I find it more fun is that it is fun to drive at normal road speeds, a lot of performance cars at this price point, particularly all wheel drive cars (not the Yaris so much) feel heavy and numb until you’re driving them at 9 or 10/10s, and by that time you’re in jail territory speed wise. They also lack character and sound out of the box with nerfed exhausts that make them sound like sewing machines until you put an aftermarket exhaust on. The N sounds awesome out of the box. Hyundai also include track warranty for non time events, so they believe in their product being used for what it was designed for. Anyway, this is just my experience, I enjoyed all of the cars I mentioned plus others I’ve had, I’d just encourage others who may snub the N because “it’s a Hyundai” to check it out. Albert really worked some magic on these and hopefully they can continue the momentum now he’s retired and I believe now in a consulting/advisory role.
