In this video an example of type I plaques is shown. These type of plaques generally appear on B-mode with uniformly hypo-anechoic (also defined echolucent) pattern and have a homogeneous texture. Due to the low echogenicity it may be difficult to distinguish the plaque borders from the lumen and the actual plaque extension. Therefore, Colour flow Doppler, properly optimised, can better depict the plaque surface and extension, as shown in the image above. Ultrasound is sensitive in detecting plaque echolucency with a detection rate up to 90%. These plaques are associated with a higher risk of stroke.
