There’s this great user review on steam that basically says why I like this game so much- rather than bask in the stupidity of early 90’s internet, Hypnospace honors it’s creativity and passion. Yes, there are scumbags on there, but most of the people are just kind, misguided, or wrapped up in their own little worlds, but is that a bad thing? The game acts as a window into the psyche of people you don’t even know, and it’s amazing how sympathetic some of these text-only characters could be. Hypnospace is an entire medium of self expression and that is a beautiful thing.

We always see 80's nostalgia pandering in media these days, and while there's plenty to like about the 80's, it's about time the 90's got its due. Hypnospace Outlaw really does pay homage to that time, and allows you to soak in the atmosphere of the early internet, which was simple yet brimming with personality and soul.

My parents almost became one of those types of Christians, however when one has three constant curious begging children who never had experience with Pokémon in their life they decided “Okay but if we don’t like it we’re giving it to your cousins” and we got the first Pokémon movie. Long story short, many years later my mom is now super fascinated by Pokémon and we got her her own 3DS and Pokémon games for Christmas last year.

I remember being swept up in the "Pokemon is satanic!" craze as a kid. I didn't play it much to start, but I remember so many of my friends who loved it and were heartbroken to have to throw their cards and games away. Their supersitious parents just listened to their pastors, just like they listened to whoever else they got the conspiracy theory from. I remember being AT the service where Ken Graves talked all about how "satanic" Pokemon was for "teaching kids evolution" (it doesn't do that either). What a joke.

Going back and reading the articles that originated the panic is a real treat. I remember one site claiming that "pika-chus" were some kind of Jungian psuedo-spiritualism. They basically tried to roll everything a boomer could hate into this one game to a hilariously incomprehensible result.

I think what makes a lot of these moments like the minor spoiler hit hard is that we most likely have experienced these things ourselves, on the receiving or the giving ends. Bit of a truth, I actually had an experience when I was way younger like that moment NitroRad pointed out. I cared for someone for a long time, was amazing friends with them for years. But one day, they post a last post, saying that something had happened and that they had to go for a long while. That was about 7 or 8 years ago, but I still miss them in the occasional post I see from the past. Like looking in an old school notebook and finding that one doodle a friend drew on your book when you weren't looking. Tugs the heart strings man. Tugs em hard.

I really wish I had lived through the early internet a lot more. When I got my first computer in 2007, sure I got to see some of early youtube and participate in forums but, for the most part, the internet was losing it's smallness. Even small forums have too many people now to see their stuff every now and again. The internet stopped being people with an affinity for computers, and just odd stuff and became... everything. Now that the internet holds everything, most people can interact with it as much as you can with a book.

Luckily it released on consoles not too long ago so I grabbed the PS4 version and... man, you weren't kidding. This really is something special. The authenticity, world building and structure of it all is fantastic. I intended to try it for a few minutes before heading to sleep last night and ended up playing until 2 am just because of how invested I was. Such a unique premise on top of an incredible execution, mixed with that perfect amount of nostalgia for those of us who were just growing up when the internet was in its infancy. The kid being banned from the Pokemon expy hit really close to home for me, my step father was a religious extremist who was also a high school drop out. So he thought witchcraft was real. I remember one day we came home from school, and we were sat down and told that we weren't allowed to like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh anymore. He even took final Fantasy 4 away from me because there were mages in it.

Now I can't play Mega Man Legends without seeing 90's James and Brady robotic acting. But seriously, fantastic video, dude. I got the chills just by you telling about the poor christian girl and I'm definitely picking this game up. Just one comment about the itch/steam discussion, if you're in a country that itch doesn't support and don't have an international credit card (which is my case), steam is the only option. That's a shame :/

I played through this game the day it came out and thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through. I especially think the final part after the game ends is pretty cool, and it pertains to my interest as someone who likes saving history. I'm glad you enjoyed it too!

Just finished this game on my Switch. I know PC's are the ideal way to play this one, but whatever. I really loved this game. Hypnospace Outlaw has quickly become one of my favourite indie games ever. It's attention to detail is astounding, and figuring out each case was one of the most rewarding experiences. Hats off to Jay and his team, as well as every content creator who contributed.
