Do you need the software to be running for the EQ to work? For example, if the software crashes (I have a HyperX keyboard and it happens once in a while), will I be stuck with the shit out of the box sound?

I've actually experienced this, too. When the HyperX app closes or crashes, the custom EQ you've made for it goes down as well. Pretty sure the only way to prevent this is to use a third-party equalizer, such as 'APO Equalizer'. It sounds better, and it's way more reliable because it actually makes changes to the system output of your choosing. It also runs in the background of your system, so even if it somehow crashes, your EQ settings should (and probably will) keep working.

Does the cloud 3 have better surround sound that cloud 2

Depends. Cloud 2 uses traditional 7.1 surround sound which is consistently pretty good, while the Cloud 3 uses DTS spatial sound which is less consistent, but it can sound much better when it actually works. In other words, Cloud 2 = Consistently good Cloud 3 = Higher highs, but lower lows

Run it with Apo Equalizer,otherwise it sounds like crap
