Hygienic Tests of my Honey Bee Stock

a Canadian Beekeeper’s Blog
Incorporating hygienic behaviour into a queen rearing program is a great way to increase resistance to brood pathogens like AFB, Chalkbrood, and also confer partial resistance to Varroa mites.
For Manitoba beekeepers, follow the link below for a link to the offered programs and its details!

I see LN2 in Ian's future... It's generally easy to find at welding gas supply houses etc, and you can often bring your own Dewar or rent various sizes, so you can get just enough for the testing, plus all the cool things you can do with it with your kids! Look up some Fun with Liquid Nitrogen videos on YT and see what the possibilities are. I was also impressed with the bee handling confidence and gentleness of the Mad Scientist, and his general knowledge and skills. The fact both of you ended up in Armour tells me the girls must have gotten quite unhappy lol

Ian, you can use a cardboard cut-cut rombus for 100 cells placed on the comb and pin-prick the cells. I used it in the selection of drone and queen breeders, its just another indicator method amongst many, we all have to use now.

Nice to finally see some testing. I started off with Saskatraz stock and they were very hygienic with many near %100 removal results. Now I selecting for low mites. Had one colony recently that had 0 mites in a sugar shake, 0 mites in worker brood, and 0 mites in drone brood. This coming out of 2 winters without treatments. I will be grafting from her this Sunday. Meanwhile I find hives not doing so well. I can remove the drones (and most of the mites), and not allow that hive to reproduce.

We use that test in our operacion.. and i think it's much better for finding varroa sencitive bees. One pin hole in every cell.. in a romb formation on the frame. Doesn't kill the brood the way ice does.. It's an imitation of varroa in the cells and diferent brood pheromone because of it.

You could do this yourself, Ian. In Canada, Home Depot, or a plumbers merchant will stock Artic Pipe Freezing Spray. (I'm in the UK) It comes in a can with a straw nozzle. Put a small hole in the lid, put the lid on the comb, and spray enough to freeze. It will cost you pennies, and you can do it in the field yourself. 👍

😂😂😂 now I saw almost everything. Hmmm... how do we do that testing for hygienic behavior? Simple, cost-effective and precise! We use drone comb, basically empty frame for bees to build drone cells and queen lay drone eggs in it. When bees close comb (and varoa in it), we pull out frame, shake bees, and put frame in fridge for 24h. Then we return it into the hive and mesure time and percentage, needed for bees to detect dead combs, open them and clean them. Winers are those colonies with 100% in less of 12h, and The Stars are those who needed only 6-7h. Game over. 😁😁😁 Keep It Simple S.... 😉

    1. Freezing brood for a hygeniec test goes way back farther than Marla.. 2. We did over 290 freeze tests this year on our own hives looking to find the most Hygeinic bees for breeders. At about year 15 of doing so hard core. Ended up with over 12 gigs of Data. We Invested over 300 man hours into the whole process. Not cheap but the queens we've been kicking out are pretty sweet.

You do not need two ' testing areas ' in one frames. One is enough. You are practically destroying a very consistent amount of brood in the frame. Second you do not need to use so much nitrogen, IT IS TOO MUCH. A simple 'tee spoon' of liquid nitrogen in one area,, is more than enough to kill the larvae's. You can do these tests in a smaller scale and the result is as reliable as the result of your method.

The same concern here... There has to be several factors contributing to how fast the bees engage in hygienic activity. Size of the colony, queen health, forage availability, worker age distribution, mite infestation level, where they are in their seasonal cycle, brood nest size, where the frames are in the brood nest, age of the frozen brood -- to name just a few to scratch a surface. Not really informative without appreciating all the variables.
