    Made up a dozen of your open feeders this summer. I like them alot. I was open feeding with larger totes and messing around with covering and uncovering for weather...Good solution to that problem.

I got an empty box and thinking of getting into this. You are awesome and I take my hat off to you mate. Keep showing all of us the way :-) thank you. Well done.

    Seems to me youd plant more than a "sprinkling" of clover....Good for the bees, good for the cattle, and the clover also fixes the nitrogen in the ground naturally. With that many acres, you could have the best clover honey in the land. (I'm sure you already do though :) )

    Would putting the top feed hole to the side of the hive, or in the corner help avoid the dripping on the cluster issue? You could put the screens on the side of the bucket lid in future replacement buckets, and add a hole to the top cover away from the center. Would there be any benefits to that, or will the cluster be large enough to still get a syrup shower? It seems like it at least would protect the queen and brood, and just get the outer layer of bees.

    Ian, I wonder if you were to have a preset pattern hole stamper which will stamp holes the size of boardman feeders into yout plastic tops, would this stop the dripping problem? The holes are very fine and do not drip on the boardman feeder. Perhaps the same can be accomplished on the bucket feeders? I believe with a little thought and ingenuity, this can be accomplished? Thanks, Phillip Hall

    Hi. I got plugs similar to yours (probably made by the same company) from BetterBee. But the leak a lot. I used a 2 inch holesaw to cut the holes. With a 1 7/8 inch hole the plug doesn't fit at all. Left a pale full of water upside down for a couple hours as an experiment, and about half the water drained out. Are you really not having that problem? Thanks Matt

Which floor or floors put the eggs by queen. 2) I don't want to give to the bees sugar, i want bees eat their own honey; i wonder that it's possible. The weather is -10 in winter here. Maybe the honey get freeze and they can't eat. Thanks for the answers.

  • @RoughAndWretchedRAW

    @RoughAndWretchedRAW

    I know I never would. It's not that the Cerecell feeders are bad. They are excellent. But Id never use a top feeder like that except in very specific cases. The pail feeder is quick and you don't have to be overly concerned with spillage. For some mating nucs or something it's fine but if I had to deal with the kind of volume of hives Ian deals with it would have to be pails. It's just the constant need to be careful so you don't spill it out all over. A good example is right at the end when he was weighing the hives in the snow. Consider the ease with checking the pails and removing them as compared to a Ceracell. Cerecells are excellent feeders. Probably the best dry and wet top feeder design I've seen commercially available. However, When the hive numbers get up that high or when time is extremely limited the time to deal with them would add hours to the jobs I think.

    Ian, what happened to the missing hive boxs at the places in your yard that only have one box now (see at 8:22 to the right of the screen the 2nd and 5th pallets) and then, what ever that reason, why don't you pair them up again leaving one pallet bare in that case? And maybe you should use something like below in your yards to tote those full pails about and save some of your back - make your own maybe with wider wheels and the wheels to the side rather than underneath - www.leevalley.com/us/garden/page.aspx?p=44960&cat=2,44639,33270&ap=1

    You measure temperature in celsius and volume in litres, but weight in pounds. Is that normal in Canada?

    To certain extent, yes. Canadians are still stuck with the weight in pounds, possibly because Canada's next door neighbour is USA. In USA, they are all in imperial measurements.
