My mind is blown right now. For the past year, I've been consciously making the effort to create a way of life that warms my soul and that I can genuinely enjoy no matter what else is going on in my life. Finally, I have a name for it! I'm an American but I have never identified with the "go, go, go" way of life that we have here. Unfortunately, that way of life permeates friendships, families, careers, health, etc. I made a promise to myself that I would not let the pace of the world around me disturb my hygge way of living.

Is that what I feel when my fiance and I go out to a Cafe. We sit down and I read while he does his own thing. We're just there not interacting but just together. It makes me feel so peaceful and happy.

You have a lovely soul. I have lived in Norway for 7 years (from New Zealand) we have a similar way of living here. Life is lived at a much slower pace in Scandinavia. Sometimes it bores me senseless but mostly it’s wonderful. Here everything needs to be “Koselig” cozy/pleasant. It’s so helpful during the long winters in particular. It’s something I’m learning to put into practice more and more. Thank you for your video. Look forward to watching more of your videos. 💕

Sabine Rahbek My oldest daughter and I were inspired to visit your country after reading this hygge book. Long ago, in my 20's, I dated a Dane who was working for House of Denmark in the States. I loved hanging out with Aksel and his Danish friends, the warmth, laughter and hygge coziness. Aksel was very tall, handsome and fun loving. He spoke 7 languages and I loved so many things about him...but he loved Heineken "a bit" TOO much. If not for that, I would be married to him and living in Copenhagen. Flash forward 40 years...I am now 67 and my 35 yr old daughter and I read the hygge book and decide to rent an Airbnb in Copenhagen and experience hygge - for real. Both loving autumn, we went end of Sept/early Oct. and the weather was glorious! It rained off and on a bit, but we both love the rain and knew Copenhagen was rainy. We just loved Copenhagen, from its wind farms greeting us as our plane approached its shores, its charming architecture, the weathered cobblestone streets, beautiful parks, castles, cafes ..and I love Danish food, ate it every day. My mom was French so I love liver and pate (my favorite thing), as well as cod and herring. Those Danish potatoes...YUM!I I ate it all! 😍 I also happily indulged my licorice obsession while there. (I think I must be part Danish...) Coming home on SAS, several Danish passengers (and me) were enjoying their All Sorts, lol! It was a great vacation. All the Danes we met were warm, friendly and welcoming. We LOVE the hygge "less is more" vibe and have adopted it in our own lifestyle. We just love everything about Copenhagen. It's so easy to get around there, more like a big village than a city. I loved watching all the cyclists whizzing past us at 40 mph. (We learned very quickly to stay the hell out of the bike lane). I would move to Copenhagen tomorrow if I could. My daughter lives in central CA and is dating a Danish-American. She had just met him when we went on our Copenhagen vacation...and had no idea at that time that he was Danish! His last name is "Jensen." Like mother, like daughter! 🇩🇰

I’ve enjoy my time watching good witch or Gilmore girls while I have my small lights and candles on with a cup of tea or some French vanilla cappuccino.. This is Swedish for just enough. Also nice ideas and thoughts there. Bought a book by Nikki Brandmark and found it enjoyable. The tips she gives in the book about not wasting are good and food for thought. Enjoy your videos.

  • @juliejakobsen1994

Chica Robertson something that can explain that is the fact that scandinavians isn’t as religious as for example the Americans. Religious people seek comfort in their faith when being depressed - and in many religions you can’t be the master of your own life = you can’t commit suicide. Many Scandinavians aren’t that religious, and therefore many more will commit suicide when they are on the edge of something :-) that hasn’t anything to do with Hygge :)

For us Danes it is very strange that a person , not even born or lived here Can describe it that Way. HYGGE is no Way thar foringers see.. Hygge is a calm feeling , wich only Can bee felt when we are in the situation. Wich we are brought up to to enjoy , happy and calmly. For us looking at American not having the same Values, about sitting togethers as a family at the table and having a decent homecook meal for dinner, to have breakfirst in our House with our kids , to make sure they are Well tasken Care of before they leave for School og kindergarden, that makes kids calm before they start the day To make the metals from scratch, to Sct and ben calm in your famile without disturbance from tv or phones, BUT To share the little things with your famile , not rushing OFF.. It is not always tea, Crouch and blanket, that is to creative hygge. It is much more essential grounded Way to cope, by be calm and not rush.. BUT because our essential life is filled with caring for eachother and enjoy the time together with friends and family, it is our calm Way to cope and behave, wich we love, BUT HYGGE in the family is to Care , to be and stay in the moment, to be there and be togethers. Tomceeate metals togethers is hygge to. Avoid plastics and neon colors to be “ back to Nature” to chose time with our family is in our genes, and we see to, that people are tasken Care for. Natural fibres, calmnes, making wise and good choises in life To put that before take away food, laptops, phones, BECAUSE our time with family is HYGGE. In the moment not rushng for new adventure befor our soul is ready. We make long vacations , everybody has at least 6 weeks plaid , off every year. We work max 37 hours a week, our Way to cope is looking forward to. Breaks, weekends, vacations , no as much work as other cultures. We are laid back, not over happy excited, and shouting our feelings out , as we see a lot of eg Americans do. We like our calm Way to tell what we feel, we dont scream, shout and overreact, as our culture is calm because of hygge we learned and felt all our life We adore traditions, that everybody Can go to School, hospitals and doctors, we love to make it our country Well situated socially, Sharing what we have with others . That makes max HYGGE

Its not something we have a patented. Its the simple feeling, when everything around you just feels right in the moment. When you wrap yourself in a blanket with your favorite movie. When you have friends coming over for dinner. The simplicity makes it beautiful and attainable for everyone! You don't need a How-to guide, just simply enjoy what you like to do.

I would highly recommend a trip to Denmark to understand Danish living aside from just relying on this coziness described in the book. Interpret it as you will, but there is a reason there is no direct translation. Like you said pay attention to closeness between people and experiences (which can be hyggeligt) rather than typical American coziness. Part of Danish happiness is also due to their strong social welfare system....
