Hydroseeding Vs Sow Seeding / Seed Drill

Long video but we cover lots of ground. Lots of discussion on How and What yard should get which treatment. Hydroseeding is a great way to establish turf but it comes with drawbacks. Sowing the seed to the soil is also a great alternative, alas it also comes with its own disadvantages. What’s not different is the soil preparation and we take a deep dive into seed to soil contact and describe conditions.

Nice job! I don’t do as many lawns or large area sewing’s as you do, but I did just tackle one recently that had me debating getting a hydro seeding set up. Here in upstate South Carolina we need to put straw down over seeding to keep the birds off, trap moisture, and avoid erosion. Shaking out bailed straw is a ton of work though when you get over a quarter acre or so. This area was over an acre, and the owner found his own rolls of straw. This was the first time I’ve used them. They’re a lot of work in their own right. My question with the hydro seeding, and I don’t think you’ve ever spelled it out, is can you prep and broadcast seed and then go back and hydro seed over top of it, basically replacing the straw?

Absolutely, i very shortly talked Hydromulch. I knew this video was going over 10 minutes and was worried about viewer fatigue so some topics just got shrank or eliminated. Hydromulch is a process that gets applied after traditional sow-seeding. Where you mix a slurry of paper mulch and water and spray it over the sowed area. Works great for gluing the seed down and also has erosion benefits. FYI a very broad/ general rule is 100 gallons covers 1,000 SqFt. An acre is 43,560 SqFt so rough numbers would be 4,300 gallons of Hydromulch. Just for perspective.
