Hydroponics - The Easy Way - Indoor Gardening in an Apartment or Home

Grow lettuce or herbs in your apartment or home during the winter time with low startup costs, and high yield results!
0:00 Intro to our Hydroponic Gardening Method
1:13 Setting it all up
6:06 Day 20 of Growth, Pros and Cons
9:40 Summary of How To
11:21 Day 30 of Growth
HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
-----
HEAVY DUTY METAL STAND (However - I HIGHLY recommend getting a 4-5ft stand instead of a 3ft! More room for the lettuce to grow and not burn their tips once they reach the height to the LEDs) - amzn.to/3YMjFot
-
2x LIGHTS (2FT - try to get something that matches the width of your stand though so there aren't spots without light. We ended up buying two sets and our plants are growing happily with that ) - amzn.to/3yEj65o
-
AUTOMATIC TIMER - amzn.to/3FqpxNf
-
NETTING POTS - amzn.to/3lgUZXv
-
RAPID ROOTER (to put your seeds inside so they don't fall through the netting pots) - amzn.to/3YOQaT4
-
CLAY PEBBLES - amzn.to/3Fq3shY
-
SEEDS (we used a variety of lettuce) - amzn.to/3Fr6a6U
-
3" DRILL BIT (to make the holes on the tops of the container, remember to use dish soap to help the drilling process) - amzn.to/3JIdQ7p
-
FERTILIZER (I got mine from my Dad, but this looks like an excellent alternative) - amzn.to/3mPkLCB
-
PH Strips (PH of the fertilized water should be 5.5-6.5) - amzn.to/3lkmX4H
-
CONTAINERS (I used these two) -

This method of hydroponics is called the 'Hydroponic Kratky Non-Circulating' method, where no pumps or electricity other than your lights are needed. You can set it and forget it! It is the easiest dummy proof way to grow a little garden indoors where you won't need to remember to water it or tend to it while it grows!
1. To set this up, you will need to get a plant stand (any heavy duty stand you can find that will support a few gallons of water) that will dimmensionally fit the containers of your choosing (make sure the containers are atleast 5"-9" in height, you need space for the plants to have air inbetween the water and the roots). Ideally you should SPRAY PAINT any clear containers BLACK to prevent algea growth like we had (or buy dark containers)!!
2. Then you space out your holes using a 3" drill bit and fit your netting pots inside. Fill the netting pots with the rapid rooter and clay pebbles (to hold it in place), and get your water + fertilizer ready in a 5 gallon bucket (something you can buy at home depot).
3. Check that the PH of the fertilized water is between 5.5-6.5. Then fill up your containers (while on your stand - they will be too heavy to move afterwards) up to where the water just touches the bottom part of the rapid rooter soil.
4. After that, set up your lights and plug them into your automatic timer for 12 hours a day on, 12 hours a day off. And then watch it grow!! In a week you will see roots touching the water surface. Then if all goes well, you should be ready to enjoy salads after week 4 :) Top off the fertilized water when it gets to under 1" in height (probably 2 months later). Enjoy!!
Thank you Mike Adams for sharing how to do this method, and thank you Mom for finding it! Thank you Dad for helping to sponsor my video, and thank you Hubby for the idea to do this in the first place!
I hope that helps you guys get one step closer to being self sufficient! Let me know if you have any questions.

If you want more Lighting on your plants take your tin foil and place it where a lot of light is not shiny with a shiny part toward the light the light will bounce off of the tin foil giving it more lighting

Never use clear containers, you want as little light getting in as possible. Light is just gonna encourage growth of algie and bacteria and imped root growth (which looking @7:06 has gotten really bad) . If you're gonna go with the DWC method, i would suggest black tough totes from home depot and spray paint the lids. Same if you're using buckets with netcup lids, get the black 5gal buckets if you can otherwise you need to spray paint them. Also wouldn't advice using rapid rooter, its not ph neutral and it will decompose throwing your system way off. Just use rock wool, for 1 to 2 inch net cup with hydroton (clay pebbles) you only need like a 12mm starter plug. You can cut like 12 of them out of a standard rockwool cube. Only other starter advice i could think to suggest would be pick your self up a digital pH meter (those strips are next to useless when balancing with adjusters) and TDS.

Right I mention that I should have spray painted the containers black, but honestly I got such great growth that I’m starting to wonder if the algea benefitted in some way. Thanks for the suggestions!

I also prefer white, I don't even bother with a coat black. I also don't use spray paint I found it VERY expensive to properly coat with spray paint. Get a good paint for about $30 for a gal. I usually use the black tote with yellow lid and just pour the white paint into lid a thin layer at a time until its nicely coated, no light gets through.

You need a larger deeper reservoir to do tomatoes properly. There are tons of videos on that. Hydroponic growing is not as simple as people make it out to be on KZread and such so don't go that route if you want something simpler. I do DWC for "other" plants as my day job and changing the reservoir is a lot of work. You have to prepare 5+ gallons of nutrient solution for a single plant, properly ph it and make sure the EC/PPM etc is good. You will have to do resevoir swaps every week or 2 so you will be moving gallons of water often and water is fairly heavy. IMO if you just want tomatoes indoor get a decent grow tent, a decent led light, some fabric pots and a decent soil. If you want to grow hydroponically for fun then search for deep water culture (DWC) or go to a local hydroponics store and someone there will be able to help you.

I did! But I’m not sure if I needed to. I think it helped a lot in the beginning of the seedling process but once the lettuce got tall it didn’t seem to need both lights. I think the most important change Id make to my set up is getting a 4-5ft tall stand instead of 3, this way the lettuce doesn’t burn at the top hitting the lights and has more room to grow

  • @NinaMariePhoto

    2 жыл бұрын

I’ve only had to do it once every month or every other month - you actually don’t want to add more nutrients since there will still be some leftover and it will be concentrated, so all you need to do is top it up with water once it gets below an inch or so! How often that happens probably varies by climate too :)

  • @NinaMariePhoto

    @NinaMariePhoto

    2 жыл бұрын

Honestly you only need to add more filtered water to it. So it’s as simple as lifting the top of the container and adding more water back up to the line. There is already a concentrated amount of your minerals since most of what has been removed is the water, and that’s all you should need to replace until you re-do your seedlings :)
