Fun little experiment Jimmy! I have seen more growers juice their grows later when leaf or fruit issues seem to happen, than when starting plants. I have been interested in the topic and following along with your update.

Thanks Matt! I agree- probably a lot more potential benefit during later stages. But might as well be thorough, and its a lot harder for me to have a good sample size at that point. Looking forward to seeing how things go from here!

I want to see one with using different water qualities from different filters like a zero water filter and then arrowhead distilled ,, etc. Without nutrients

I think adds only helps when it's fruiting

same like a aquarium if you have it next to windows and not in a darker area it will turned green use dark pots

I hate spraying too [old body man, lungs shot] I now take aluminum foil tape and wrap my jars, works great and no spray : )

Great video. I'm gonna subscribe and look forward to future videos. Cost benefit analysis say your standard 2 part or 3 part is the way to go. I would like to see a similar trial with base nutrients and one group getting silica additives under high wind conditions. Gotta paint the threaded portion of your jars. Even though the algae isn't harmful it obfuscates the results of the trial sometimes.

@@JimmyBHarvests wind blows 357 days per year here where I'm at. Sometimes very strong. We get monsoon conditions a few times per year. Snapped branches and trunks can occur. Silica is supposed to strengthen plants and make them more resistant to breaking.

From my experience, synthetic additives seems to only help when plants are large, like in their 2 month transitioning to blooming and flowering. For seedlings and new small clones, only beneficial bacteria additives seems to work best along with light base nutes.

I have a liquid fish emulsion and liquid calcium made from eggshells; would you add it to a large pepper plant ? Most people I talk to add cal-mag to strawberries; I’m not sure how differently fruits operate …….. ?! Thanks ; )

I currently use masterblend 4-18-38 kit, Flora series and Dyno Grow. Each grew differently until they reached the fruiting stage. At this point they all caught up to balance out. I will say Flora series was less maintenance wise. PH wasn't fluctuating while the other two required some adjustments on PH down.

You can. Its all the same

I went crazy over the last couple of years with nutrients and such. And to each their own on what works for them, but at the end of the day- even the cheapest of base 3 part recipes really hold their own ( providing the manufactures didn’t cheap out on the trace elements ) without needing a million side bottles. I did the cal/mag liquids, supplemental calcium nitrate and I’ll share with ya, BluePlanets powdered cal/mag 8-0-0 has become my favorite . Tons of micro/trace in it too. Aminos and vitamins I’ve been adding for a few years- whether or not it’s snake oil 😂 it’s the first thing that goes into each of my batches. Don’t worry, I’m not an anti algae person 😂 ✌️ 🍻

Kills the algae. Doesn't seem to effect the plants negatively in small quantities.

Al eens geprobeerd met zelf gemaakte nutrients? De getoonde zaken zijn niet zo makkelijk verkrijgbaar in Portugal. We hebben wel de producten van bv Yara.

I am so curious to know, if you only had the General Hydroponics Flora 3-part series, what combination would you use for peppers? (Personally I'm trying to grow habanada peppers and they're growing realllly slowly).

Havent used though yet myself, but I would simply follow the on bottle instructions. I'd question your lighting first if you think its growing slowly. Posting photos of your setup/plant to r/hydroponics can be a great way to troubleshoot and get some feedback from a hydroponics community.

With an npk of 2-0-0 best to use cal mag during flowering stage. Since calcium nitrate is a 15-0-0

Hey im trying to make lettuce hydroponically what nutrients should i get here becouse reserching i think that just grow and mabye root is good but i dont know what brand/witch ones to get thats not to expensive

I bought Masterblend and they came out with a 10-10-10 which I love and my plants do amazingly well with it;

What was the EC difference with and without additives

There are holes for the seeds already cut in the rook wool. If you have algae, you need to paint the jars a dark color. and make sure the top of the jar has no openings.

It would be handy to show us what EC levels you use...

Calcium and magnesium is needed when fruiting and needs vary depending on the plant. Like bok choy and most Chinese greens are heavy consumers of calcium and magnesium. But not lettuces.

Oh I was hoping you were going to try different NPK values, like Masterblend 4-13-18 vs Miracle Gro 18-18-21 vs Maxigrow 10-5-14 to see which was best.

I've grown a bit of lettuce, some peppers, etc. in hydroponics, and overall, to my inexperienced eyes, the base plants were healthier visually at the first viewing. At week 5 (2:42) the base plants visually are spread out a bit more and appear to have more leaves per plant overall. Also, what were the time lapse settings you used (how many pictures per minute/hour)? That really showed the growth well without being too lengthy.

Oh rats! I was hoping I'd find the answer to my pepper problem here. My lunchbox pepper plant is wilted, losing leaves and pale yellow with spots. Right next to it, in the same light, and same hydroponic solution is my red pepper, which is vibrant & strong with dark green healthy leaves. My solution is from a 5 gal solution of: Master Blend 1 cup, calcium nitrate 1 cup and espom salt 1/2 cup. I watched a video suggesting spraying a water mixture of a crushed powdered TUMS on the leaves and adding some of the calcium solution to the water reservoir. I did that and looked at the plant 6 hours later and saw 3 more tiny leaves have fallen off,m and still wilting I think it's going to die before I can find someone to help me. I'm a newbie at hydroponics but my various lettuces, collard greens, strawberries, and red pepper are doing great. I can't seem to grow spinach and thus pepper plant. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Algae aborbs a lot of P and K.

One tip, don't add calmag to the water with fertilizers, because calcium binds with pottasium. Just sprinkle plants with calmag.

Nah, just follow the feed chart and mix them all in the correct order. Calmag is the most used and abused product in the garden industry.

@@JimmyBHarvests That’s not very nice, but class is in session: 1. Your jars are white. Light passes white spectrum but does not with black and brown. Next time make your jars black or brown so we don’t have to see those nasty algae on the roots. 2. You used the incorrect amount of nutrients to begin with. Then “add” something extra even when the added solutions are still insufficient. A total of 9% Calcium nitrate is insufficient for a vegetable plant. At minimum, this looked like a shameless plug for those nutrients. 3. In hydroponic you should never use growth solutions. It’s called amateur hour. They contain mostly water and are not concentrated and expensive. Buy soluble powder and make your own nutrients. 4. Since you are growing indoors, a heat mat and a humidity dome was necessary to insure a proper germination. Those plants were stressed. 5. Use a whole Rockwool cube, they have small holes for your seeds instead of placing them on top of your leftovers like a dead weight. Even seeds need stability and prefer darkness during the germination. 6. The sunlight direction and inconsistency of weather changes were not appropriate for the peppers plant. Pepper Plants would show better results with a direct fluorescent lights and lots of warmth instead of that “window”. 7. Next time, don’t act like a rude millennial spaz. Respect your elders and beg for wisdom from them, so you have some value. Class session over. You are welcome.

Hey shiftstart thanks for sharing what you know and adding to the conversation productively! Hopefully we can all learn about growing together rather than putting people down! 1. 100% agreed, spoke about this in the video 2. Ive mixed my nutrients as per the manufacturer's recommendations, so thats interesting! Would love to hear what resources you would recommend that could teach me more about it. 3. This is absolutely a video by and for amateurs. Will look into powders, thanks. 4. 'Was necessary' is a bit strong given that everything germinated.. what signs of stress do you think these plants are exhibiting? 5. Again is there an exhibited sign of stress that you believe relates to a small rockwool cube? Ive grown a number of plants at a time with varying sizes of rockwool and never seemed to have performance differences between the cohorts. Somewhat small sample, maybe a 100 plants or so of various kinds. Eventually i went small permanently. Would love to see any proof that its beneficial to have a large cube. 6. These plants had a full spectrum led grow light above them the entire grow.. 7. I dont think i spazzed but again thanks for sharing a productive comment! Great conversation starters and things to think about as we all look to grow bigger and better harvests.
