Hydraulic Press Bending Steel

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here is the hydraulic press my friend and I built. We finished with some dies for bending so here we are bending a 3/16" piece of flat steel. I learned lots on this project and because I enjoy welding I got lots of TIG time in.

    Thank you. I did TIG the entire press. I enjoy welding so it was fun but I will say that if I did one again I would MIG it. Much quicker especially when one starts getting into multiple passes for the important welds.

    1990notch Thanks for the compliment. My friend was the mind behind the design. He has a great aptitude for this type of thing. All I did was listen to him, cut, bend, tack and weld.

    Thanks. I have to say, I find it rather amusing why people like to do a thumbs down. I am not saying I have a great press but I can't see why it deserves a TD. I do give some videos a TD when they are purely clickbait and zero to do with the lure. Maybe KZread needs to come up with something better. Thanks again.

    Chris Harris Is MIG welding better than TIG?

  • @ChrisHarris4U

    @ChrisHarris4U

    +USNVA In most cases TIG will produce a better weld. Much easier to control heat input and travel speed. MIG is great for getting the job done. You have a free hand with MIG to hold things in place. So if I was going to do something quick then I use MIG otherwise TIG.

    That is a huge press. I will be welding a press with my everlast welder but it will be much, much smaller than that. Have you ever had a job that required the full size of that press?

  • @ChrisHarris4U

    @ChrisHarris4U

    6 жыл бұрын

    Elijah Taylor - Yes, because one quickly needs all the space when bending sheet metal. But for simple jobs, a smaller one will do fine. Would suggest as much pressure as you can get. One always needs that.

    How much pressure does that electro-hydraulic system generate?? Something tells me this machine has a little more chutzpah than a 12-ton bottle Jack rig. I’d like to be able to effectively bend 3/16” stock.

    i think it is 60,000 pounds. i can check if needed. but this can bend 3/16 easily. obviously depending on width

    I was not ezpecting a full 90* bend as you're using both male and female 90* dies (springback) Can you comment on this? thanks

  • @ChrisHarris4U

    @ChrisHarris4U

    6 ай бұрын

    good question. i experimented with this and the die can bend beyond 90 degrees because of the stretch at the apex. so one has to be careful on how much pressure to apply otherwise the opposite problem can occur - too much!

    Very nice press and dies, but builders keep forgetting that all the force you apply upstairs will go directly to the base and the wheels

    The pressure you apply with the jack to the work piece, X tons, will be also apply to the base or wheels you have in your build. If you have a cheap wheels, they eventually could break under the pressure. Regards

    +Jose Arrue so a 20 ton press applies 20 tons to the work piece as well as to the wheels? And builders are always forgetting that important fact?

  • @ChrisHarris4U

    @ChrisHarris4U

    7 жыл бұрын

    I can't see how any force is directed to the base. The force is applied from the ram and resistance is in the cross member welded to the frame. Below the point of the weld there is zero fore applied other than gravity.
