Hydra the Revenge Review | Dorney Park's Odd B&M Floorless Coaster

Ойын-сауық

This is the weidest floorless coaster ever built! B&M is known for creating some incredible rides around the world- but many of them feel similar, with almost 'formulaic' elements. Hydra is not one of those! This floorless coaster lacks all the traditional moments found on other rides and instead has a completely custom layout that has quickly allowed this to become one of Dorney's signature attractions!

    I grew up on Hercules, it was my very first big coaster and it made me a coaster nerd. I have such fun memories of riding that with my dad. When Hercules was taken out, I refused to ride Hydra out of loyalty to the coaster that made me. Then, I moved an hour away and my hubby, kids, and I started getting season passes and I knew it was time to give it a go. It blew me out of the water and I think it's a great ride. I don't feel the shakiness, nor the headbanging on it and we ride it every time we go. I just wish I got to ride it with my dad before he passed, but I got to have that experience with my own kids, so I'm now the parent making those memories and I think he'd be proud of it.

    Poor Dorney. They debuted Talon only to be upstaged by Nitro. Then they built Hydra only to be upstaged by Kingda Ka. At least this year Iron Menace has a shot at being the one to upstage Flash.

    This was the coaster that got me to like coasters. My friends took me to Dorney in 2019 and peer pressured me to ride this and then I ended up riding more than 4 times that day and loved it. Got back to Dorney in 2023 after riding it for that first time all those years ago and I got to ride this again, and while it was different that what I remembered, (the shakiness) I still appreciate this ride for what it has done to me with liking coasters!

    I finally got to ride Hydra a couple years ago, and I loved it for what it was - the most quirky B&M I'd ever been on! It was great that it didn't contain the "standard" inversion elements. And I have no memory of it being rough (and being in my upper 40's at the time of riding, I would've remembered that!)

    I assume all the weird elements on Hydra were purposely made to cut corners on budget. This ride replaced Hercules, one of the tallest wooden coasters ever built. It being so sunken and awkward wasn't because of a height restriction- it was to save cost.

    So I rode this very early in it's life and it was glassy smooth then, and what I like about it so much was the feeling that I could ride the whole thing (after three jojo roll) with no restraint and just float through the whole layout. It's lack of forces we're actually appealing in a weird way

    This was the first coaster of our 5 park trip last summer. The Jo-jo roll was unexpected and we were very much "What the f*** was that?" Dorney overall, though, was way better than our expectations. And for me- 1. Posessed, 2. Talon, 3. Hydra 4. Thunderhawk 5. Steel Force.

    Very accurate rating and review. I was not blown away by this when I rode it about 10 years ago. The Jojo roll was very cool and different, but after that, I agree with the 6 rating. I'm someone who never gets tired of vertical loops, so the lack of one on here made me miss it. And yeah, Steel Force and Talon were definitely my top 2 when we went.

  • @OklahomaCoasterFan
    @OklahomaCoasterFan5 ай бұрын

    I love how quirky and different it is. I like that it's not intense, as many intense floorless coasters give me headbanging. Hydra doesn't. It's easily my favorite ride at Dorney Park. On the subject of inversions, it either has 7 or it has 4. 3 of the inversions, including the 2 in the cobra roll, just barely reach the 135-degree mark. If you want to be technical, which is what I do, it definitely has 7. But then, Storm Chaser and Iron Gwazi would also have 3. If you go by feel, then you can start disqualifying some inversions, but that will also be very subjective person to person. rcdb should be technical about it across the board, but they aren't.

    Honestly hydra was pretty smooth for me, it’s very unique but also at the same time the zero g roll is pitiful. The ride is a 6/10 for me because it’s so unique but it just doesn’t have forces asides from the jojo roll. My entire visit was pretty bad so hopefully I get a worthy round 2 for this park. It has so much potential. But my visit was not great.

    Wikipedia lists that "inversion" as an inclined dive loop, and claims that GateKeeper is the only other coaster with such an element. But you clearly go upside down on GateKeeper's. Hydra's never inverts. It's more like a tight overbanked turn, not dissimilar to the one found on Mako. If people want to give SFOG grief for calling Mindbender the world's first triple-inverting coaster despite that second "inversion" never going upside down, they ought to give the same consideration to this inversion on Hydra. (And, what do you know, RCDB and Wikipedia both list Mindbender as having two inversions).
